Jensen Huang and Michael Jordan Were Born the Same Day: the Same BaZi, the Same Luck Pillars, Two Different Lives

Nvidia founder Jensen Huang (黃仁勳) and basketball great Michael Jordan were both born on 17 February 1963. Their first three pillars are identical: Gui-Mao, Jia-Yin, Xin-Mao (癸卯 甲寅 辛卯). And because both are male, their ten-year luck pillars change over in exactly the same years. One played basketball, the other builds chips. This page lays the chart out to see what the same rhythm grew into in two different lives, and says honestly what BaZi cannot explain.

Birth data: one has a birth certificate, the other only a date

A curious detail: at the moment Jordan was born, it was already the early hours of 18 February in Taiwan. But BaZi is always cast in the local time of the birthplace, so both charts belong to 17 February. Jordan’s 1:40 p.m. becomes about 13:30 in true solar time, which is the Wei hour.

Huang’s birth hour has not been made public, so we use only the year, month and day pillars. The one caveat: if he was born after 11 p.m., our engine starts the new day at 23:00 (the Zi hour), the day pillar would move to the next day, and it would be a different chart.

The three pillars they share: Xin Metal dropped into a woodpile

Our strength engine: below 0.35 reads weak, above 0.55 reads strong. The Wealth share is the proportion of the whole chart’s strength held by a single Ten God, taken from the engine’s “illness and remedy” check. Huang’s chart lacks an hour pillar, so his three-pillar score runs low; that is why we also cast all twelve hours one by one.

This is a textbook, and extreme, case of heavy Wealth, weak Day Master (cai duo shen ruo): money and opportunity (Wealth) everywhere, and no root of one’s own to carry it (on Huang’s three pillars alone, Wealth’s share rises to 71%). The engine reads it as weak, favoring Metal (companions, helpers) and Earth (Resource, backing), and disfavoring Water, Wood and Fire.

Without Huang’s birth hour, does the reading still hold?

We plugged in all twelve hours and cast each one:

Whatever hour he was born in, the score falls between 0.11 and 0.26: weak in all twelve, favoring Metal and Earth in all twelve. The hour pillar only changes the details (the Chou and Xu hours add a little Earth and score slightly higher); it does not change the verdict. That is why this page is willing to work from three pillars.

Could it be a “Follow Wealth” chart?

With Wealth this strong and the Day Master completely rootless, some practitioners would read it as “abandon the self and follow Wealth” (a Follow Wealth chart, cong cai ge): the Day Master gives up on itself and goes where Wealth goes, Wealth becomes favorable instead, and the whole favorable / unfavorable list flips.

Our engine does not call it a Follow chart, because the Yin month branch still hides Wu Earth, Direct Resource, so the Day Master is not entirely without support; we only recognize a Follow chart when there is no Resource or companion at all (see our method). The two readings can be tested against the luck pillars: if it were a Follow Wealth chart, Metal and Earth luck pillars should be the worst; if it is a weak Day Master that needs support, Metal and Earth luck pillars should be the best. The luck pillar table below gives a fairly clear answer.

Identical luck pillars: how each man walked them

The year stem Gui is yin, so for a man the luck pillars run backwards, starting at age 5. The two change over in the same years, so the table puts them side by side:

Bring the favorable and unfavorable elements in, and four things in this table stand out:

1. In the Friend pillar (1987–1996) both found their partners: a Friend is someone of your own kind, and for a weak Day Master that means people who share the load. Jordan got Pippen in 1987, and only then did the Bulls start winning titles; Huang started his company with two engineers in 1993. The most important partnerships of both lives appeared in this pillar.
2. In the Indirect Resource pillar (2007–2016) both took an unconventional road: this pillar’s branch You is the “salary” (lu) position of Xin Metal, and it is the first time this chart has a real root. Indirect Resource stands for niche, unorthodox knowledge or paths. In this decade Huang bet on CUDA, getting graphics cards to do computing beyond graphics, which Wall Street did not understand for a while. Jordan went from player to team owner; the team’s results were not pretty, but his Nike licensing income made him a billionaire.
3. In the Direct Resource pillar (2017–2026) both reached their peak wealth: the branch Shen is where Xin Metal is at its strongest (the “emperor” stage), and the stem shows Wu Earth, Direct Resource. The weak Day Master finally has both a root and Resource, and can carry a chart full of Wealth. In the same year, 2023, Nvidia’s market value passed a trillion dollars and Jordan sold his majority stake in the team at a valuation of about US$3 billion.
4. Where it does not fit: the Hurting Officer pillar (1977–1986) is unfavorable, yet Jordan became famous in it. Ren-Zi is Water, which is unfavorable for this chart. Yet Jordan’s championship-winning shot as a freshman, his entry into the NBA and the Air Jordan deal all fall in this decade. Hurting Officer stands for performance and visible talent; this pillar put him on the stage, but for a weak Day Master it is a constant drain. An unfavorable pillar does not mean no achievement, only that achievement comes at a particularly high cost. We state this as it is, without bending it to fit.

Back to the earlier question: the twenty straight years of Metal and Earth luck pillars from 2007 were the peak years of wealth for both men. That supports the reading “weak Day Master that favors Metal and Earth” rather than a Follow Wealth chart.

1993: one retired, one founded a company

A clash on the day branch traditionally means big changes in one’s own situation or in the people close by; and the same year gave the Day Master a root. In the same year, Jordan left and Huang set off. BaZi can only say this year will move; it cannot say which direction.

Almost the same BaZi, so why such different lives?

This is the question this page really wants to answer. Two men born on the same day with identical luck pillars: one the god of basketball, one the godfather of chips. Huang’s net worth is counted in the hundreds of billions of dollars, Jordan’s in the billions, a difference of dozens of times. Where does the gap come from?

1. BaZi does not write down a profession, only a structure

Heavy Wealth with a weak Day Master describes a situation: opportunities and goals are always out there, and plentiful, and you have to fight to grab them. That structure can be a basketball court or the chip industry. The trait most often said to connect the two is “fiercely competitive workaholic,” which is exactly how a heavy-Wealth, weak-Day-Master person carries the load with willpower when there is no root. BaZi can say that much; it cannot say whether he should play basketball or make chips.

2. About 160,000 people in the world share these three pillars

Rough estimate: the UN Population Division puts 1963 births worldwide at about 110 million; spread evenly over the days of the year, times a male share of about 51.5%; for four pillars, divided again by 12 two-hour periods. An order of magnitude, not a precise figure.

About 160,000 boys worldwide were born on the same day as these two, with the same rhythm of luck pillars. Out of so many, only two became household names; for the rest, 1993 and 2023 were mostly ordinary turns in work or family. BaZi marks the rhythm, not the height.

3. The era and the industry set the multiplier

Jordan’s wealth came from pro sports and sneaker licensing, a market with a ceiling however big it gets. Huang’s Direct Resource pillar from 2017 ran straight into the demand for computing power set off by generative AI, and one company’s market value grew more than tenfold in a few years. The same good luck pillar, placed in different industries, was multiplied by factors dozens of times apart, and that column is not in BaZi.

4. Upbringing: the first ten years the chart cannot see

One grew up in a family in the American South; the other was sent away from his parents at nine to a boarding school in a foreign country. Both began with the Gui-Chou Eating God pillar, but the same Eating God was, for one, a talent played out on hometown courts and, for the other, learning to look after himself in a strange place. BaZi hands everyone the same weather; each person holds a different umbrella.

5. A different hour pillar changes the details

Jordan’s Yi-Wei hour pillar adds another layer of Wealth and clashes the Day Master, so his score is only 0.150; if Huang was born in the Chou or Xu hour, his score would rise to around 0.25. The hour pillar would make their later years, relationships with children and ways of working differ, but as the twelve-hour table above shows, it cannot change the big picture: “heavy Wealth, weak Day Master, favoring Metal and Earth.”

What comes next: the Ding-Wei Seven Killings pillar from 2027

2026 is the last year of the Wu-Shen Direct Resource pillar. From 2027 it changes to the Ding-Wei Seven Killings pillar: the stem Ding Fire is Seven Killings and attacks Xin Metal directly, and the branch Wei half-combines with the Mao in the chart into Wood, adding another layer of Wealth. Twenty straight years of favorable Metal and Earth come to an end, and pressure in the chart will clearly rise again.

We make no predictions about anyone’s business success or failure, and make no judgment of any kind about the share price of Nvidia or any other company. All we can say is that for this chart, it will be a decade with a clearly different character.

Zi Wei Dou Shu chart

The same birth time, cast in Zi Wei Dou Shu (San He school, the same engine as our Zi Wei chart tool, using the same true solar time as the BaZi chart above). BaZi weighs the five elements and what the chart favors; Zi Wei looks at which stars fall in which palace. The two systems ask different questions, so the Zi Wei chart is shown on its own first, followed by where it agrees and disagrees with the BaZi reading.

The gold frame is the Life Palace; the shaded palaces are its three-sides-and-four-directions (Wealth, Career, Travel). Solid badges are the birth-year transformations (Lu, Quan, Ke, Ji), red names are the six malefic stars, and the small word after a major star is its brightness.

Jordan’s Zi Wei Life Palace is empty (the Wei palace), so it borrows Wu Qu and Tan Lang from the opposite palace, and for someone born in a Gui year, Tan Lang’s Ji transformation sits right there. Wu Qu with Tan Lang is a pairing with fierce ambition and competitiveness, and Ji stands for fixation, the inability to let go. It is easy to connect with his famous will to win, but that too is a comparison made after the fact. The Career Palace holds Tian Fu, and the Wealth Palace holds Tian Xiang in a fallen position.

Jensen Huang and Michael Jordan were born on the same day, both in a Gui-Mao year, so their birth-year transformations are identical: Po Jun Lu, Ju Men Quan, Tai Yin Ke and Tan Lang Ji. But Huang’s birth hour has never been made public, so his Life Palace, Body Palace, bureau and the palace of every star cannot be fixed, and there is no way to know which palaces the transformations land in. BaZi can still read three pillars; Zi Wei has to stop here. That is the fundamental difference in how much the two systems depend on the birth hour, and it is why this page has only one Zi Wei chart, Jordan’s.

Western astrology chart

The same moment of birth, cast as a Western natal chart (tropical zodiac, Placidus houses, the same engine as our natal chart tool). A natal chart uses the sky at the moment of birth, so it needs no true-solar-time correction, but it does need the latitude of the birthplace to fix the Ascendant and the houses. BaZi and Zi Wei are both derived from the Chinese calendar, while a natal chart computes planetary positions directly. Because the three systems start from different places, the chart is listed on its own below, followed by where it agrees with the BaZi and Zi Wei readings.

Jordan has the Sun in Aquarius, the Moon in Sagittarius and Cancer rising. His Moon and Mars form a trine with an orb of only 0.1°: the Moon is emotion and Mars is action and competition, and when the two are closely in step the traditional reading is that feelings convert straight into drive, which sounds a lot like the way he got more ferocious as a game reached its decisive moments. The chart ruler, the Moon, sits in the 6th house (daily work and practice), and what he was famous for was precisely the intensity of his training and his hunger to win.

Compared with Jensen Huang: born on the same day, the two share exactly the same signs for the nine bodies from the Sun and Mercury out to Pluto. The only differences are the Moon (Jordan’s is in Sagittarius; on Huang’s birth day the Moon moved from Scorpio into Sagittarius, so without a time it cannot be settled) and the Ascendant and houses (Huang has no birth time, so they cannot be cast). Like BaZi, the natal chart cannot explain why two people born on the same day became the god of basketball and the CEO of a chip company.
