Why twelve solar-term months rather than calendar months
A BaZi month is neither a calendar month nor a lunar month. It is a solar-term month, one of twelve stretches bounded by the twelve jie: Li Chun opens the Yin month, Jing Zhe the Mao month, Qing Ming the Chen month, and so on down to Xiao Han opening the Chou month, which runs back round to the next Li Chun.
So a solar-term month straddles two calendar months and its start drifts a day or two from year to year. The first month of 2027 runs from 2027-02-04 (Li Chun) to 2027-03-06 (Jing Zhe). Every date on this page is computed that way rather than approximated to "roughly March".

Three turning points in the year
The first is Xiao Shu (Ding Wei). The month pillar is identical to the year pillar, which makes it the Tai Sui month. Months like this compress the year's whole theme into four weeks — whatever was coming arrives there in its clearest form. The dryness and the inward focus of a Ding Wei year peak in that stretch.
The second is Li Qiu (Wu Shen). The dryness begins to break here: Wu Earth drains Ding Fire and Shen Metal is where Water begins its cycle. Whatever has been bottled up through the first half becomes easier to say and easier to ship from Li Qiu onward. For anyone pressed by the fire all year, this is the most noticeable relief.
The third is Xiao Han (Gui Chou). The Chou–Wei clash is struck head-on in this month, and structural change across the year tends either to conclude or to erupt here. Anything to be signed, negotiated or ended is better not left until this stretch.

When does the 2027 Ding Wei year start and end?
From Li Chun on 4 February 2027 to Li Chun on 4 February 2028. BaZi bounds the year at Li Chun, not at 1 January and not at Chinese New Year, which in 2027 falls on 6 February. That matters most when deciding someone's animal sign: a person born before Li Chun still belongs to the previous year pillar.

How do solar-term months differ from lunar months?
A lunar month follows the moon, running from the first day of the lunar month to its end. A solar-term month follows the sun, bounded by the twelve jie (Li Chun, Jing Zhe, Qing Ming and so on). BaZi uses solar-term months, so one of them straddles two calendar months and its start drifts a day or two each year. The two often differ by more than a fortnight, and mixing them produces the wrong month pillar outright.
Can I use this table to read my own year?
Only for the general climate. Monthly pillars are shared by everyone — the same Bing Wu month helps a chart that likes Fire and presses a chart that does not. To read yourself you need the four pillars, so that the month pillar can be read against your Day Master and against the specific characters in your chart. The rhythm section on each zodiac page does one layer of that comparison, but still only at year-branch resolution.
