Period 9 carries the 9 Purple star (You Bi), the trigram Li, the element Fire, and the south. This is the period we are currently in: it began at Lichun, 4 February 2024 and runs to 2043. Li stands for fire, light, electricity, the sun, the eye, civilisation, the middle daughter. And what has happened since 2024 — generative AI sweeping through every industry, data-centre demand forcing countries to restart nuclear plants, short video and livestreams consuming all available attention, global temperature records broken — is, without a single exception, Fire business.

What this period is made of: the Li trigram
Li is one yin line held inside two yang lines — bright at the edges, hollow at the centre. Fire is fundamentally attachment: it has no body of its own and must cling to something else in order to burn. So Li’s upside is brightness, illumination, civilisation and beauty; its downside is superficiality, violence, burning out as fast as it flares, and being visible without being graspable.
Li is the middle daughter, the eye, electricity, the sun, arms and armour — and also the net (the trigram’s shape resembles mesh). In human affairs it governs power and energy, optoelectronics and semiconductors, image and vision, information and networks, beauty and fashion, the heart and the eyes, religion and the life of the spirit. One more thing to say up front: Fire makes things visible. Period 8’s Gen Earth was about hiding, hoarding and holding in the hand; Period 9 Li Fire is the exact opposite — what is hidden loses value in this period, and what is seen gains it. That is the single biggest change of rules between the two, and the reason so many people have felt since 2024 that the old approach suddenly stopped working.

The cycle runs 180 years, so the previous Period 9 covered 1844 to 1863. Lined up side by side, the repetition is hard to miss.

- 1861 The American Civil War begins; the Xinyou coup brings Cixi to power in China — War and a change of rulers; East and West both enter a new configuration.
Put the list from 1844–1863 next to the news since 2024 and it gets slightly eerie: in the last Fire period humanity turned electricity into messages (the telegraph, the transatlantic cable) and drilled the first oil; in this one it is turning electricity into intelligence (AI, compute) and scrambling for power all over again. Same position in the cycle, same subject, a hundred and eighty years apart.
But hold on to the second half too. That same period saw tens of millions dead in the Taiping Rebellion, the Old Summer Palace burned, and America at civil war. Fire gives light and it gives burns. Anyone telling you Period 9 is simply a lucky, prosperous era has not finished reading the list.

Period 9 is Fire. If Fire is favourable in your chart — often the case for a cold, wet chart that needs warming, or damp Earth that needs drying — the wider environment is adding fuel for you: you will find that as soon as you are willing to step into the light (speak, publish, be seen), things move more easily than they used to. This is especially true for charts with Fire in the Output or Authority stars, for whom Period 9 is a window to convert talent into income.
If Fire is unfavourable for you (an already hot chart, or one that needs Water or Metal), three things are worth watching in a Fire era: haste (deciding too fast), burn (spending energy faster than you earn), and hollowness (plenty of heat, nothing settled). The counterweights are Water to temper — slow down, leave white space, do not fill the calendar — and Earth to catch, turning every exposure into something that accumulates: a body of work, a mailing list, an asset. Give the fire somewhere to land instead of letting it burn out into air.
And one last matter of scale: Period 9 is the background, not your fate. Inside the same Fire period some people rise on the updraft and others are burned to exhaustion; the difference is each person’s favourable elements and luck pillars. One honest note: this is background music, not a verdict

The claim circulates widely because Li’s human figure is the middle daughter. A fairer statement is this: a Li Fire era leans towards expression, influence, aesthetics and inner life, and authority in those domains depends less on physical strength or seniority, which is relatively favourable to women and to younger people. Pushing it to "women win and men lose for twenty years" goes well past what the symbolism supports — a trigram describes the character of an energy, not a demographic forecast.
Now that Period 9 has started, is property on the way out?
The reasonable reading is that the rules changed, not that the asset class ended. Period 8 Gen Earth rewarded buying property, holding it and waiting for appreciation; that is no longer the path of least resistance in Period 9, which favours things that shine, move and get seen. Property in this period is more likely to shift towards use, content and energy — data-centre sites, experience-led retail, tourism and filming locations. Fire is unfavourable in my chart — does that mean twenty bad years?
