In this cycle Period 8 ran from 2004 to 2023 — twenty years in which property prices went to the sky (earth), everyone ended up with a phone in their palm (hand), the companies that mattered were founded by people in their twenties (youngest son), and for the last three years the whole planet shut its doors (stopping). What this period is made of: the Gen trigram
Gen is one yang line coming to rest above two yin lines — it has gone as far as it goes, and it stops. The Book of Changes says "Gen is stopping: stop when it is time to stop, move when it is time to move." This is not deadness; it is knowing how to halt. Its upside is steadiness, accumulation and clean boundaries; its downside is stubbornness, closure and stagnation.
Gen is the youngest son, the mountain, the gate, the hand, the narrow path. In human affairs it governs real estate, uplands, storage, religious practice, adolescence — and every kind of boundary and checkpoint. In San Yuan Jiu Yun, 8 White has long been counted a prosperous star because it rules accumulation and the settling of wealth. And indeed the classic way to get rich in Period 8 was exactly that: buy something that cannot move, then wait.
2004–2023: what actually happened
The leads of these twenty years are houses, handsets and young people. And from 2020, the whole species experienced Gen’s most literal meaning: stop.

Both rounds of Period 8 are wrestling with the door: Lin Zexu shut it in 1839 and cannon opened it in 1842; the world closed its borders in 2020 and has been arguing ever since about how far to open them. What Gen actually teaches is not that closing is good or opening is good, but "stop when it is time to stop, move when it is time to move". Which is the most usable thing Period 8 leaves us with: knowing when to stop is itself a skill.

If Earth is favourable in your chart, you probably felt these twenty years as a tailwind: buying property, building assets, entering a stable system, gaining by accumulation rather than by bursts. Gen Earth differs from Period 2’s Kun: Kun is plain, Gen is mountain, so it emphasises boundaries and holding ground — the right move was to mark out your own territory and dig in.
If Earth is unfavourable, the standard complaint of Period 8 was being stuck: wanting to move and not being able to, unable to buy in or to let go, life sliced up by rules and checkpoints. The counterweights are Wood (open a new path instead of pushing at the old one) and Water (keep liquidity and optionality). One thing worth saying plainly: Period 8 ended at Lichun 2024. If you are still making decisions with its logic — hold, accumulate, wait for appreciation — you may be navigating with an expired map. Period 9 is Fire, and it plays differently.
One honest note: a match is not a cause
The list above was assembled after the fact. Every event on it has its own specific political, economic and technological causes; none of it happened because the calendar had reached Period 8. Any twenty years will produce events that fit some trigram — the difference is only that the fitting ones get remembered.
So why read it at all? Because the system supplies a useful unit: twenty years is roughly how long it takes a way of doing things to emerge, become standard, and stop working. In the current San Yuan Jiu Yun cycle, Period 8 ran from 2004 to 2023. It ended at Lichun on 4 February 2024, handing over to Period 9 Fire. One cycle earlier it ran 1824 to 1843. Note that periods change at Lichun, not at New Year’s Day or Lunar New Year — this is the single most common mix-up.
Why is Period 8 called the golden age of property?
Period 8 carries the Gen trigram — mountain, earth, the gate — and 8 White has long been counted a prosperous star in San Yuan Jiu Yun, ruling accumulation and the settling of wealth. Gen’s human figure is the youngest son, standing for adolescence and for forces just getting started. The most representative companies of Period 8 were indeed founded by people around twenty, and both social media and cryptocurrency were pushed forward by a young generation. The parallel is fun to read, but treat it strictly as a description of an era’s mood rather than proof of causation — the real drivers were internet penetration and a collapse in the cost of starting a company.
Now Period 8 is over, is property finished?
That does not follow. San Yuan Jiu Yun describes a twenty-year climate, not a buy or sell signal. The reasonable reading is that Period 8’s logic — buy something immovable, do nothing, wait for it to appreciate — is no longer the path of least resistance in Period 9 Fire, which favours light, power, content and energy, that is, assets that do something rather than assets merely held.
