Period 7 · 7 Red Dui Metal (1984–2003): Talking Became a Business

Period 7 carries the 7 Red star (Po Jun, the Broken Army), the trigram Dui, the element Metal, and the west. Dui is the mouth, joy, the youngest daughter — speaking, laughing, pleasing, exchanging. Period 6’s Metal was the blade; Period 7’s Metal is currency and song. In this cycle Period 7 ran from 1984 to 2003. Consider what happened in Taiwan alone: martial law lifted, family visits to the mainland reopened, cable television, talk-show pundits, karaoke, the Four Heavenly Kings, a stock index above twelve thousand, the first direct presidential election. All of it about the mouth — people could finally speak, someone was finally listening, and speech started converting into money.

What this period is made of: the Dui trigram

Dui is one yin line above two yang lines — yielding on top, firm underneath. Its upside is delight, communication and the ability to gather people. Its downside is gossip, disputes, exaggeration, and the dissipating quality of Po Jun, the star of breaking and rebuilding. The traditional association of 7 Red with quarrels, litigation and theft is pointing at exactly this: loud on the outside, leaky on the inside.

Dui is the youngest daughter, the mouth, the lake, and breakage. In human affairs it governs media, performance, food and drink, law, sales and financial trading — any trade that lives by speaking, selling or pleasing. The social signature of a Period 7 is usually the same: an explosion of speech, entertainment in charge, and asset prices driven by mood.

1984–2003: what actually happened

In these twenty years Taiwanese people could speak out loud for the first time, and money began moving faster than goods anywhere on earth. The party and the bubble were the same thing.

• 1984The Sino-British Joint Declaration; the Los Angeles Olympics

  Hong Kong’s future is settled in a declaration; the Olympics are run for the first time as a profitable entertainment product.

• 1987Martial law is lifted in Taiwan; travel to the mainland to visit relatives is permitted

  Thirty-eight years of enforced silence end. Dui is the mouth — the first big event of Period 7 is simply that people may now speak.

• 1989The Berlin Wall falls; the Tiananmen crackdown

  The wall built in the previous Period 8 round of wall-building is pushed over by crowds with their hands.

• 1990The Taiwan stock index peaks above 12,600 in February

  The whole country trades shares; tips circulate in the wet market. Dui is joy and Dui is money — in this period, mood and asset prices fuse.

• 1991The Soviet Union dissolves; the Gulf War is broadcast live by CNN

  For the first time, people watch a war from the sofa. Media becomes part of the battlefield.

• 1993Cable television is legalised in Taiwan

  Unlicensed "fourth channel" operators come above ground and a hundred channels start talking at once — the golden age of pundits, talk shows and shopping channels.

• 1996Taiwan holds its first direct presidential election

  The choice goes to every ballot paper. A vote is also a kind of mouth.

• 1997Hong Kong returns to Chinese sovereignty; the Asian financial crisis

  Hot money arrives fast and leaves faster, washing through an entire region’s assets.

• 1999The 921 earthquake in Taiwan; the euro is introduced

  Taiwan suffers its worst postwar quake; Europe folds a dozen currencies into one.

• 2000Taiwan’s first transfer of power between parties; the dot-com bubble bursts

  Both events say the same thing about Period 7: whoever tells the better story wins — and whoever oversells it falls.

• 20019/11; China joins the WTO

  The fear of globalisation and the dividend of globalisation, laid out in the same year.

• 2003The SARS outbreak

  Period 7 ends with a contagion that halts human contact at scale for the first time — a preview of the next period, Gen: stopping.

The cycle runs 180 years, so the previous Period 7 covered 1804 to 1823. Lined up side by side, the repetition is hard to miss.

What Period 7 lifts, and what it leaves behind

The element in force is Metal, so work and methods that suit Metal cost less effort; the ones that cut against it need more to move at all.
