What this period is made of: the Qian trigram
"Heaven moves with strength; the superior person never stops exerting himself." Qian’s energy is hard, straight, upward and unambiguous. Its Metal is not jewellery; it is the metal of blades and machines. So Period 6 rewards discipline, authority, scale and delivery, and has little use for ambiguity, indirection or private sentiment.
Qian is the father, the head, the circle, ice, deep red. In human affairs it governs states, armies, large corporations, leaders, metal and machinery, and every order that runs top-down. 1964–1983: what actually happened
In these twenty years humanity reached the Moon, dismantled the gold standard, poured concrete on a national scale — and buried several men who had dominated half a century.

- 1789 The French Revolution; 1793 Louis XVI is executed — Qian is the ruler — and in this period a ruler is sent to the scaffold by his own people. Both faces of Qian Metal in one event.
- 1793 The Macartney embassy reaches China; Qianlong replies that the Celestial Empire wants for nothing — "Celestial Empire" is Qian describing itself. One period later that confidence starts to fail.
- 1796–1804 The White Lotus Rebellion — The high Qing’s finances and administration are hollowed out; the dynasty turns from peak to decline.
- 1799 Napoleon seizes power in the coup of 18 Brumaire — The old ruler is beheaded and a new one grows out of the army. Qian Metal is never short of strongmen; it just changes who.
Set the two rounds side by side and you get Qian’s deepest lesson: Qian is the ruler, but a Qian period does not keep rulers safe — it simply pushes the question of authority to the centre of the stage. Louis XVI executed in 1793, Napoleon in power by 1799; Chiang and Mao dying in 1975 and 1976, Thatcher and Reagan arriving in 1979 and 1980. Strongmen rising and strongmen falling are the same energy expressing itself. This is also where reading the nine periods most often goes wrong: the period amplifies a theme, not an outcome.

If Metal is unfavourable (a Wood chart being cut too hard, or a chart needing Fire or Wood), a Qian Metal era feels like being pressed down: stricter rules, decisions made above your head, nowhere to use your flexibility. So why read it at all? Because the system supplies a useful unit: twenty years is roughly how long it takes a way of doing things to emerge, become standard, and stop working.
