Period 5 · 5 Yellow at the Centre (1944–1963): The Floor of the World Was Taken Up and Relaid
Period 5 is the strange one. In the nine-square Luoshu grid, 5 sits at the centre — it has no trigram and no direction of its own, because it is the centre. The 5 Yellow star (Lian Zhen) is the most powerful of the nine and the least directed: at best it settles an entire order, at worst it is the notorious 5 Yellow affliction. In this cycle Period 5 ran from 1944 to 1963 — twenty years in which humanity ended a war with an atomic bomb, and then used the United Nations, the Bretton Woods system and two nuclear blocs to take up the floor of the world and lay it again.

What this period is made of: the Centre trigram
Every trigram has a seat and a temperament. 5 Yellow has neither. The traditional workaround is to lodge it with 2 Black or 8 White, borrowing their Earth to give it somewhere to stand — which tells you everything about its character: it is too heavy and too central for any single role to contain it. It is not a force pointing in some direction; it is the point where all directions meet.
That makes Period 5 the most extreme of the nine. What gets built is built to last; what falls, falls completely. Flying Star calls 5 Yellow the great affliction and avoids disturbing it, exactly because of this unassigned weight. Scaled up to an era, Period 5 usually lines up with a time when the old order stops working entirely and a new one is written from the centre — rules are not amended, they are replaced.
1944–1963: what actually happened
These twenty years contain the largest mass death in human history and the largest institutional rebuild in human history. The same generation did both.

The cycle runs 180 years, so the previous Period 5 covered 1764 to 1783. Lined up side by side, the repetition is hard to miss.

Both rounds of Period 5 do one thing: replace the rules wholesale. 1776 replaced the rules of states and markets; 1944 replaced the rules of money and international institutions. 1769 replaced the source of power; 1945 replaced the nature of weapons. 5 Yellow sits at the centre with no trigram, which means precisely this — it takes no side, it moves the table. And when the table moves, everyone sitting at it has to find their seat again. That is why the human cost of a Period 5 tends to be the highest of the nine.

The element in force is Earth, so work and methods that suit Earth cost less effort; the ones that cut against it need more to move at all.

Period 5 is Earth, and the heaviest, densest Earth of all. If Earth is favourable in your chart, Period 5 offers a rare kind of backing: institutions, large organisations, and work that only becomes real at scale and over time. But be warned — this is not the warm, sustaining Earth of Period 2’s Kun. It is heavy, hard and undirected, so even people who need Earth often describe it the same way: enormous opportunity, matching pressure.
If Earth is unfavourable, Period 5 is where you feel held down: more rules, longer procedures, individual will overwritten by the collective. The counterweights are the usual three — Wood to loosen (keep your own growth path and expertise so the institution does not absorb you whole), Water to soften (keep liquidity and an exit), and Metal to drain (convert thick Earth into portable skills and credentials). The hardest, most practical lesson of Period 5: when the whole table is being replaced, make sure you own a chair you can carry.
One honest note: a match is not a cause
The list above was assembled after the fact. Every event on it has its own specific political, economic and technological causes; none of it happened because the calendar had reached Period 5. Any twenty years will produce events that fit some trigram — the difference is only that the fitting ones get remembered.
So why read it at all? Because the system supplies a useful unit: twenty years is roughly how long it takes a way of doing things to emerge, become standard, and stop working. What years is Period 5?
In the current San Yuan Jiu Yun cycle, Period 5 ran from 1944 to 1963, with boundaries on Lichun. One cycle earlier it ran 1764 to 1783. Period 5 sits at the middle of the Middle Era and at the dead centre of the whole 180-year cycle, between Period 4 (1924–1943) and Period 6 (1964–1983).
Why does Period 5 have no trigram?
Because 5 occupies the centre square of the Luoshu grid. The eight trigrams hold the eight directions, and the centre has no direction left to assign, so 5 Yellow (Lian Zhen) is the only one of the nine stars without a trigram. The traditional fix is to lodge it with 2 Black or 8 White and borrow their Earth. That also explains its temperament: maximum force with no direction — what it establishes stands unusually firm, and what it collapses collapses utterly.
Is 5 Yellow really the worst star?
Flying Star does treat 5 Yellow as the great affliction, avoiding construction or disturbance in its direction — but that is the practical layer of house feng shui. Reading it as "twenty unlucky years" at the scale of an era misuses the tool. The real character of Period 5 is extremity: the old order stops working and a new one is written from the centre. Look at 1944–1963 and you get the atomic bomb and the Korean War alongside the United Nations and the postwar financial system. The destruction and the construction are the same twenty years.
Why is Taiwan’s land reform the standard Period 5 example?
Because the timing and the nature both fit. The 37.5% rent reduction in 1949, public land sales in 1951 and the Land-to-the-Tiller Act in 1953 all sit inside Period 5, which is an Earth period whose core subject is the redistribution of land and order. The same window also contains the mass migration across the strait. It is still an after-the-fact match, though — those policies had specific political and economic causes, and did not happen because of which period it was.
