Marie Curie’s BaZi: Late-Autumn Xin Metal Facing a Wall of Pressure Stars

Marie Curie (born Maria Skłodowska) grew up in Russian-ruled Warsaw, where women could not go to university. She worked for years as a governess to save money and only reached the Sorbonne in Paris at 24. With her husband Pierre she discovered polonium and radium; she was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, and is still the only person to win Nobel Prizes in two different sciences. There are two accounts of her birth time: her baptismal record says noon, while her daughter’s biography says shortly after sunrise. The chart comes out as Ding-Mao, Geng-Xu, Xin-Mao, Jia-Wu (a Ren-Chen hour in the sunrise version): Xin Metal born in late autumn, with the branches combining into a Fire formation of Officer and Seven Killings. Both versions read balanced, favoring Earth and Metal. The most striking thing about this chart is that both of her Nobel Prizes fell within twenty straight years of luck pillars that were unfavorable throughout.

Birth data: a baptismal record and a biography

The Astro-Databank birth data collection uses the noon time on the baptismal record. Warsaw kept local time in 1867, and in early November the equation of time puts the real sun sixteen minutes ahead, so the true solar time (the local sun time BaZi uses) is 12:16, in the Wu hour. Her daughter Ève, in her biography, says she was born shortly after sunrise, which would be the Chen hour. Both accounts give the same strength, favorable elements and luck pillars. We also cast all twelve possible hours: in 9 of them the favorable elements are Earth and Metal. Below, the Wu hour from the baptismal record is the main chart.

The Four Pillars and the Ten Gods

Our strength engine scores season, roots, visible stems, support from Resource and companions, and drain from Wealth, Officer and Output: below 0.35 reads weak, above 0.55 reads strong.

A score of 0.405 is balanced. Xin Metal is fed by Xu Earth and backed by Geng Metal, but the Fire combination of pressure stars attacks it and the Mao Wood Wealth stars feed that fire. The favorable elements are Earth (Resource) and Metal (companions); the unfavorable ones are Wood (Wealth) and Fire (Officer and Seven Killings).

A woman’s chart in which the pressure stars form a combination is traditionally read as “bearing great outside pressure all her life, and tempered into resilience by it”. She grew up in a country that did not let women go to university, was one of very few women in academia once she reached Paris, and after winning her prizes endured press attacks driven by xenophobia and sexism. But that is a reading made after the fact.

Luck pillars: both Nobel Prizes in twenty fully unfavorable years

For a woman born in a yin year (the year stem Ding is yin), the luck pillars run forward, starting at age 2. Both birth-time accounts give the same luck pillars.

“fav / unfav” reads the stem first, then the branch: whether each one’s element is favorable (useful), unfavorable, or neither (neutral) for this chart.

From 1898 to 1917, the two luck pillars Jia-Yin and Yi-Mao are Wood in both stem and branch. Wood is her Wealth star and unfavorable, and Wood also feeds Fire, strengthening the pressure stars even more. By the usual reading, these should have been twenty “very hard” years.

They were indeed hard. She processed tons of ore residue in a shed with a leaking roof, lost her husband, and after her prizes faced attacks driven by xenophobia and sexism. Yet in those same twenty years she discovered two new elements, won the Nobel Prize twice, and became the Sorbonne’s first woman professor. An unfavorable luck pillar describes the cost and the pressure, not whether there is achievement, and her life is the best example there is.

Marie Curie died in 1934. We do not use BaZi to discuss health, lifespan or cause of death, and that holds for every chart in this series.

Some key years

1898 was a Wu-Xu year: the stem Wu Earth and the branch Xu Earth are both Direct Resource, so the whole year is favorable, and it is exactly the Earth her chart needs most. Inside a luck pillar that was unfavorable throughout, the most important discovery of her life landed in a fully favorable year. 1903, a Gui-Mao year, has a neutral stem and an unfavorable Mao Wood branch, and she won her first Nobel Prize; in 1911, a Xin-Hai year, the stem Xin Metal is Friend and favorable, and she won her second. Where does the chart miss her real life?

Zi Wei Dou Shu chart

The same birth time, cast in Zi Wei Dou Shu (San He school, the same engine as our Zi Wei chart tool, using the same true solar time as the BaZi chart above). BaZi weighs the five elements and what the chart favors; Zi Wei looks at which stars fall in which palace. The two systems ask different questions, so the Zi Wei chart is shown on its own first, followed by where it agrees and disagrees with the BaZi reading.

The gold frame is the Life Palace; the shaded palaces are its three-sides-and-four-directions (Wealth, Career, Travel). Solid badges are the birth-year transformations (Lu, Quan, Ke, Ji), red names are the six malefic stars, and the small word after a major star is its brightness.

In the noon version from the baptismal record, the Zi Wei chart has Tian Xiang in the Life Palace (in the Si palace), with the Body Palace in the same place, joined by Tian Ma, Tuo Luo, Di Jie and Di Kong. The Wealth Palace holds Tian Fu, brilliant, flanked by Zuo Fu and You Bi; the Career Palace is empty, and the Travel Palace opposite it holds Wu Qu and Po Jun. Tian Xiang values principle and knowing where the lines are, and Tian Ma stands for travel far from home. She left Russian-ruled Poland at 24 to study in Paris, so this reading holds up. The sunrise version puts Zi Wei and Po Jun in the Life Palace, a far more pioneering combination. The two versions give completely different Zi Wei charts, while the BaZi is balanced and favors Earth and Metal either way: one more example of Zi Wei depending on the birth time much more than BaZi does.

With the other birth-time versions, the Zi Wei chart becomes:

In BaZi the hour pillar changes every two hours while the day pillar and above stay put. In Zi Wei the Life Palace is set by the lunar month and the hour, so a different hour moves the Life Palace, the Body Palace, the bureau and every major star at once. The same dispute over a birth hour therefore usually matters more for Zi Wei than for BaZi.

Western astrology chart

The same moment of birth, cast as a Western natal chart (tropical zodiac, Placidus houses, the same engine as our natal chart tool). A natal chart uses the sky at the moment of birth, so it needs no true-solar-time correction, but it does need the latitude of the birthplace to fix the Ascendant and the houses. BaZi and Zi Wei are both derived from the Chinese calendar, while a natal chart computes planetary positions directly. Because the three systems start from different places, the chart is listed on its own below, followed by where it agrees with the BaZi and Zi Wei readings.

Four planets, the Sun, Venus, Mars and Saturn, are all in Scorpio, and three of them sit in the 10th house (career and public achievement). Scorpio is the sign most devoted to depth, investigation and “unseen forces”, and Mars in Scorpio is in its own sign. It is hard not to think of a woman who spent four years in a leaky shed processing tons of ore residue just to extract a tiny amount of an invisible radioactive element. Six of the ten planets are in water signs. The baptismal-record version has Capricorn rising, with the chart ruler Saturn also in the 10th house: discipline and long, patient cultivation. The sunrise version has Scorpio rising. A hindsight warning: radioactivity, invisible forces, all of these associations can only be found because we already know what she achieved.

Planets move very little in a day, so the Sun and Mercury through Pluto are almost identical in both versions. What changes most is the Ascendant and the houses: the whole wheel turns by roughly one house every two hours.
