Coco Chanel’s BaZi: Early-Autumn Yi Wood Surrounded by Officer Stars

Coco Chanel was born in the poorhouse hospice in Saumur, France. When she was 12 her mother died and her father left her at an orphanage run by nuns. Later she sang in cafés, which is where the name “Coco” came from. Starting from a single hat shop, she got women out of corsets and into jersey and the little black dress, and launched the most famous perfume in history. Her birth time is on her birth certificate and casts as Gui-Wei, Geng-Shen, Yi-Wei, Jia-Shen (癸未 庚申 乙未 甲申): Yi Wood born in early autumn, with Metal in stem and branch, and all twelve hours read weak.

Birth data: a birth certificate, and weak in all twelve hours

In 1883 all of France kept Paris mean time. Saumur lies a little over two degrees west of Paris, so the true Sun runs about ten minutes behind, and in mid-August the equation of time holds it back another four; converted, that is 15:47. (BaZi uses true solar time, the time by the Sun’s actual position.) We also cast all twelve hours: every score falls between 0.19 and 0.34, weak in all twelve, favoring Water and Wood in all twelve.

Four Pillars and Ten Gods

Our strength engine scores season, roots, visible stems, Resource and companions against Wealth, Officer and Output: below 0.35 reads weak, above 0.55 reads strong.

Score 0.305: weak. Yi Wood is cut by a chart full of Metal and drained by two Wei Earth branches, so the favorable elements are Water (Resource) to nourish it and Wood (companions) to help it; the unfavorable ones are Fire (Output), Earth (Wealth) and Metal (Officer).

Direct Officer stands for rules, order and the frameworks of society. A flowering plant hemmed in on every side by Officer stars is traditionally read as “a life spent negotiating with the rules”. That is exactly what she did: she broke the rules of women’s dress of her day, making women’s clothes from menswear fabrics and getting women to cut their hair short and wear trousers. In a woman’s chart the Officer star is also the traditional marker of the husband; we only note that tradition and make no comment on her love life.

Luck pillars: a decade in the orphanage all unfavorable, twenty years of empire all favorable

For a woman born in a yin year (the year stem Gui is yin), the luck pillars run forwards, starting at age 8.

“fav / unfav” reads the stem first, then the branch: whether each one’s element is favorable (useful), unfavorable, or neither (neutral) for this chart.

The Xin-You luck pillar, when she entered the orphanage at 12, is Metal in both stem and branch, the Seven Killings that attack her: a genuinely unfavorable pillar. The Gui-Hai and Jia-Zi pillars of 1910–1929, by contrast, are Water and Wood throughout, exactly what she needed most: Water to feed the Wood, Wood to support the Day Master. In those twenty years she went from one hat shop to shops in three cities, launched jersey, Chanel No. 5 and the little black dress, and became the central figure of Paris fashion. In this series it is one of the charts where the luck pillars line up most neatly with the rises and falls of a career.

Where it does not fit: her two most important years were both unfavorable

The luck pillars line up neatly, but the individual years do not cooperate: 1910 (Geng-Xu), when she opened her first shop, and 1921 (Xin-You), when she launched Chanel No. 5, are unfavorable in both stem and branch. By the usual reading these should have been hard years; instead they were the two most important starting points of her life. We list them as they are: look only at the luck pillars and the chart seems remarkably accurate; put the individual years alongside and you see the full picture.

Where does the chart miss her real life?

Zi Wei Dou Shu chart

The same birth time, cast in Zi Wei Dou Shu (San He school, the same engine as our Zi Wei chart tool, using the same true solar time as the BaZi chart above). BaZi weighs the five elements and what the chart favors; Zi Wei looks at which stars fall in which palace. The two systems ask different questions, so the Zi Wei chart is shown on its own first, followed by where it agrees and disagrees with the BaZi reading.

The gold frame is the Life Palace; the shaded palaces are its three-sides-and-four-directions (Wealth, Career, Travel). Solid badges are the birth-year transformations (Lu, Quan, Ke, Ji), red names are the six malefic stars, and the small word after a major star is its brightness.

Chanel’s Zi Wei chart has Tai Yang in the Life Palace (the Zi branch). Tai Yang is fallen there, but the palace also holds Wen Qu and Lu Cun; and the Body Palace falls in the Career Palace, where Ju Men carries the Quan transformation. A Body Palace in the Career Palace is traditionally read as “a life centered on work”. Ju Men governs speech, critique and opinion, and Quan is authority. She did not just design clothes; she defined elegance through a stream of sharp, cutting remarks, and “fashion fades, only style remains” is hers. The Wealth Palace is empty of major stars, so money is read from the opposite palace. All of this is reading after the fact.

Western astrology chart

The same moment of birth, cast as a Western natal chart (tropical zodiac, Placidus houses, the same engine as our natal chart tool). A natal chart uses the sky at the moment of birth, so it needs no true-solar-time correction, but it does need the latitude of the birthplace to fix the Ascendant and the houses. BaZi and Zi Wei are both derived from the Chinese calendar, while a natal chart computes planetary positions directly. Because the three systems start from different places, the chart is listed on its own below, followed by where it agrees with the BaZi and Zi Wei readings.

The Sun is in Leo, and in its own sign: Leo is the sign that cares most about self-expression and personal style, and the Sun is at full strength in the sign it rules. More unusual still, 4 planets, Sun, Mercury, Venus and Uranus, are crowded into the 8th house. In astrology the 8th house covers “other people’s resources”, partnerships, investment and transformation; much of her business got started with backers and partners, and Chanel No. 5 was developed with businessmen as partners, followed by years of legal battles over the shares. Sagittarius rising, with the chart ruler Jupiter exalted in Cancer, makes an outgoing, optimistic, risk-taking chart. Where it does not fit: BaZi reads her as a weak Yi Wood, the same in all twelve hours, while the natal chart has a Sun in its own sign and a Fire sign rising and looks anything but “weak”. The two systems clearly describe her strength differently.
