Albert Einstein’s BaZi: Bing Fire Weighed Down by Resource, and a Miracle Year in Unfavorable Luck

Einstein’s birth certificate gives 14 March 1879 at 11:30 in the morning, which casts as Ji-Mao, Ding-Mao, Bing-Shen, Jia-Wu (己卯 丁卯 丙申 甲午). What this chart has most of is Resource, the Ten God of learning, ideas and absorption. It makes up some 41% of the chart, and our engine flags it as “Resource so strong it becomes an illness”. The man who changed the world with ideas has a chart made mostly of ideas. The timeline is even more interesting: in 1905, the year he rewrote physics, both the stem and branch of the year were unfavorable, while the luck pillars of the years he was world-famous, from 1911 into old age, were favorable throughout.

Birth data: an age before time zones

Germany adopted Central European Time nationwide only in 1893; in 1879 most towns kept their own local time. So the 11:30 on the certificate can be read three ways:

In mid-March the equation of time puts the Sun about 9 minutes behind mean time. The three readings differ by at most 20 minutes and all fall in the Wu hour (11:00–13:00), so the hour of this chart is not in dispute. (A BaZi chart uses true solar time, the time by the Sun’s actual position, rather than clock time.)

Four Pillars and Ten Gods: Bing Fire with far too much Resource

The engine reads strong, score 0.599: in season, rooted, and backed by Resource. Resource (Wood) alone makes up about 41% of the chart, so much that it becomes the chart’s “illness” (in the illness-and-remedy method, the excessive element is the problem to be treated). The favorable elements are therefore Metal (Wealth) to cut the Wood, Earth (Output) to drain the Fire and Water (Officer) to restrain it; Wood and Fire are unfavorable. The chart also runs hot and dry and short of Water, so climate calls for Water as well.

Resource is thought: a chart full of ideas

Among the Ten Gods, Resource stands for learning, absorption, thinking, belief and knowledge, and Indirect Resource leans toward the unusual, the unorthodox and the far-fetched. The traditional picture of a Resource-heavy chart is the scholar, the thinker or the religious figure: someone who spends a great deal of time inside their own head and cares less for the rules of the outside world.

Einstein’s signature method was the thought experiment: imagine chasing a beam of light, imagine an elevator accelerating through space. He ran no experiments; he reasoned it through in his head and overturned the idea of space and time that had stood since Newton. What the chart has most of is thought, and thought was the most important tool of his life. The Indirect Resource showing on the hour stem, with its streak of the unconventional and the contrary, also fits his lifelong distrust of authority. This is a symbolic reading; the great majority of people with the same structure did not become scientists.

But too much Resource is also an illness. Resource is the power of being fed, and in excess it leaves a person trapped in their own head and cut off from practical reality. The classic challenges of a Resource-heavy chart are trouble making things concrete and handling people and worldly affairs, so it needs Wealth (Metal) to bring the feet back to the ground and Output (Earth) to turn ideas into things that can be shown.

Luck pillars: thirty unfavorable years, then forty favorable ones

For a man born in a yin year (the year stem Ji is yin), the luck pillars run backwards, starting at age 3.

“fav / unfav” reads the stem first, then the branch: whether each one’s element is favorable (useful), unfavorable, or neither (neutral) for this chart.

In the first three luck pillars the stems run Bing, Yi, Jia: Friend, Direct Resource, Indirect Resource, all Fire and Wood, all unfavorable. For those thirty years he kept running into walls at school and in institutions: he left German secondary school unfinished, found no teaching post after university, and ended up working at the patent office.

From 1911 on, five luck pillars in a row are favorable in both stem and branch: Gui-Hai, Ren-Xu, Xin-You, Geng-Shen, Ji-Wei. Water, Metal and Earth take turns, exactly what this chart wants. His academic standing, world fame, the Nobel Prize and a secure research life in Princeton all came in this stretch.

The most interesting year: the miracle year was an unfavorable year

1905 was a Yi-Si year. The stem Yi Wood is Direct Resource and the branch Si Fire is Friend, so both stem and branch are unfavorable, and the luck pillar’s stem was unfavorable too. By the usual reading of favorable and unfavorable, this is a bad year. In reality, a 26-year-old patent clerk published four papers in a single year and rewrote physics. The Yi-Mao year of 1915, when he completed general relativity, was likewise unfavorable in both stem and branch.

Do those two years fail to fit? Look at them from another angle and they fit well: Yi-Si and Yi-Mao are both years when Resource, thought, is at its strongest. For a chart already overloaded with Resource, more Resource is “unfavorable”: more burden, more time trapped in the head, further from practical reality. But for someone whose work is thinking, that is also when thought runs most intense and most single-minded. Favorable and unfavorable describe the load on the Day Master, not whether the results are good or bad.

Conversely, in 1919 and 1921, the years the world saw him, both the year and the luck pillar were favorable. So the chart can be read like this: the creation happened in unfavorable luck, the fame came in favorable luck. The breakthroughs were made when no one was watching and the pressure was greatest; when the favorable luck arrived, the world caught up with him. This is the cleanest example in the series that favorable elements and achievement are two different things.

Einstein died in April 1955, aged 76. We do not use BaZi to discuss lifespan, and that holds for every chart in this series.

Where does the chart miss his real life?

One more thing BaZi cannot explain: in 1905 he happened to arrive when physics was at its most confused and most in need of a new theory, and his job at the patent office had him examining inventions about time synchronization and electromagnetism every day. The era put the problem in front of him, and that column is not in any chart.

Zi Wei Dou Shu chart

The same birth time, cast in Zi Wei Dou Shu (San He school, the same engine as our Zi Wei chart tool, using the same true solar time as the BaZi chart above). BaZi weighs the five elements and what the chart favors; Zi Wei looks at which stars fall in which palace. The two systems ask different questions, so the Zi Wei chart is shown on its own first, followed by where it agrees and disagrees with the BaZi reading.

The gold frame is the Life Palace; the shaded palaces are its three-sides-and-four-directions (Wealth, Career, Travel). Solid badges are the birth-year transformations (Lu, Quan, Ke, Ji), red names are the six malefic stars, and the small word after a major star is its brightness.

Einstein’s Zi Wei chart has Zi Wei and Tan Lang together in the Life Palace (the You branch), with Tan Lang carrying the Quan transformation right there, and the Body Palace sharing the Life Palace. Zi Wei with Tan Lang pairs the emperor star with the star of talents and appetites; the old texts describe such people as opinionated, fond of life’s pleasures and gifted in many directions, and Quan on Tan Lang turns appetite into drive and a wish to lead. The Wealth Palace holds Wu Qu and Po Jun (Wu Qu with Lu), and the Career Palace holds Lian Zhen and Qi Sha, so the Life, Wealth and Career palaces carry exactly the Zi Wei, Lian Zhen and Wu Qu triad. Compared with BaZi: BaZi reads him as a strong Bing Fire favoring Metal, Earth and Water, with the point being energy that overflows and needs an outlet; Zi Wei sees someone who wants to lead and does not accept the rules as given. The two point the same way. Where it does not fit: the Zi Wei chart does not show a physicist. Tian Ji and Ju Men, the stars of research and analysis, are nowhere in his Life, Wealth or Career palaces; handed over anonymously, this chart would more likely be read as a business leader or an artist. Both time readings fall in the Wu hour, so the Zi Wei chart is identical.

With the other birth-time versions, the Zi Wei chart becomes:

In BaZi the hour pillar changes every two hours while the day pillar and above stay put. In Zi Wei the Life Palace is set by the lunar month and the hour, so a different hour moves the Life Palace, the Body Palace, the bureau and every major star at once. The same dispute over a birth hour therefore usually matters more for Zi Wei than for BaZi.

Western astrology chart

The same moment of birth, cast as a Western natal chart (tropical zodiac, Placidus houses, the same engine as our natal chart tool). A natal chart uses the sky at the moment of birth, so it needs no true-solar-time correction, but it does need the latitude of the birthplace to fix the Ascendant and the houses. BaZi and Zi Wei are both derived from the Chinese calendar, while a natal chart computes planetary positions directly. Because the three systems start from different places, the chart is listed on its own below, followed by where it agrees with the BaZi and Zi Wei readings.

The Sun is in Pisces in the 10th house (career), with Cancer rising and the Moon in Sagittarius. Pisces is the sign of imagination and intuition. Einstein’s best-known line is that imagination is more important than knowledge, and his theories often began as thought experiments, which sits close to a Pisces Sun placed in the house of career. A Sagittarius Moon is curiosity about the big questions and the laws of the universe. Mercury (thinking) and Saturn (structure) are conjunct in Aries, also in the 10th house, often read as thinking that is rigorous and bold at once. The chart ruler, the Moon, sits in the 6th house (daily work), and his most important papers were written in the years he spent at the patent office in Bern. Both time readings give Cancer rising. Where it does not fit is the same as with Zi Wei: this chart looks like a thinker or an artist, not specifically a physicist.

With the other birth time, the chart becomes:

Planets move very little in a day, so the Sun and Mercury through Pluto are almost identical in both versions. What changes most is the Ascendant and the houses: the whole wheel turns by roughly one house every two hours.

Domicile, exaltation, fall and detriment in brackets are the classical categories for how comfortably a planet works in a sign; they are not verdicts of good or bad.
