Grace Kelly’s BaZi: Xin Metal Surrounded by Four Clashes

Grace Kelly grew up in a wealthy Philadelphia family, reached Broadway at 20, made her first film at 22, won the Academy Award for Best Actress at 25 for The Country Girl, and at 26 left acting to marry Prince Rainier III of Monaco. She was in Hollywood for only five years, yet left classics such as Rear Window and To Catch a Thief. Her birth time comes from her birth certificate, and the chart is Ji-Si, Yi-Hai, Xin-You, Xin-Mao (己巳 乙亥 辛酉 辛卯): Xin Metal born in early winter, with two Yi–Xin clashes on the stems and the Si–Hai and Mao–You clashes in the branches. Almost every pillar is in a clash. Our engine reads it as balanced.

Philadelphia sits almost exactly on the Eastern time zone’s meridian, and in mid-November the equation of time puts the Sun sixteen minutes ahead of the clock, giving 5:46, in the Mao hour. We also cast all twelve hours: in 8 of them the favorable elements are led by Earth and Metal, while the Chou, Shen, You and Xu hours switch to Water, Wood and Fire. We go with the Mao hour from the birth certificate.

A score of 0.406: balanced. The favorable elements are Earth (Resource), Metal (companions) and Fire (Officer and Seven Killings); the unfavorable one is Wood (Wealth). The Si Fire in the year branch is the only warmth in the chart.

Traditionally, a chart with four clashes across stems and branches is read as “a life of great change, with dramatic shifts of surroundings and status”. She went from Philadelphia heiress to Hollywood’s Best Actress to princess of a small European state, and each stage was an entirely different world. But that is a reading after the fact: charts with four clashes are common, and most of the people who have them never see turns like hers.

Luck pillars: the five Hollywood years and the wedding, all in one fully favorable pillar

For a woman born in a yin year (the year stem Ji is yin), the luck pillars run forwards, starting at age 10.

1956 is a Bing-Shen year: the stem Bing Fire is Direct Officer and the branch Shen Metal is Rob Wealth, both favorable. Traditionally, in a woman’s chart the Officer star stands for the husband, and in the year the Direct Officer showed, she married into a royal family. In 1954 and 1955 the stems Jia and Yi Wood are both Wealth, her only unfavorable element, yet those were the years she made the most important films of her life and won the Oscar. Grace Kelly’s Zi Wei chart has Lian Zhen in the Life Palace (the Shen palace, brilliant), Zi Wei and Tian Xiang in the Wealth Palace, Wu Qu and Tian Fu in the Career Palace (Wu Qu taking Lu, with Tian Kui alongside), Tan Lang taking Quan in the Travel Palace, and Qi Sha in the Spouse Palace. This is almost exactly the layout of Frida Kahlo in this series; only the Life Palace differs, in Shen for one and Yin for the other. Both have Lian Zhen in the Life Palace, Zi Wei and Tian Xiang in Wealth, Wu Qu and Tian Fu in Career. One became Mexico’s legendary painter, the other left Hollywood to marry into Monaco’s royal family, which shows how the same star layout can grow into completely different lives. Her Body Palace falls in the Travel Palace, traditionally read as “the center of gravity of life lies far from home”; retiring from film at 26 and marrying into Monaco reads very smoothly here, and Tan Lang taking Quan in the Travel Palace also stands for influence abroad. Western astrology chart

The same moment of birth, cast as a Western natal chart (tropical zodiac, Placidus houses, the same engine as our natal chart tool). A natal chart uses the sky at the moment of birth, so it needs no true-solar-time correction, but it does need the latitude of the birthplace to fix the Ascendant and the houses. BaZi and Zi Wei are both derived from the Chinese calendar, while a natal chart computes planetary positions directly. Scorpio is cool on the surface, intense underneath and protective of its privacy, which matches her screen image as the “ice queen” and her habit, after marriage, of keeping her private life almost entirely out of view. Venus is in Libra, its domicile; Libra values elegance, beauty and good manners, and her wardrobe is still a fashion reference today. The Sun forms a trine to Pluto with an orb of 0.0°, traditionally read as a firm will and the capacity to transform a life completely.
