Marilyn Monroe’s BaZi: Two Eating Gods and a Jewel Surrounded by Summer Fire

Marilyn Monroe’s birth time is written on her birth certificate, the best grade of data available for any celebrity. Her chart is Bing-Yin, Gui-Si, Xin-You, Gui-Si (丙寅 癸巳 辛酉 癸巳). The Day Master is Xin Metal, which among the ten Heavenly Stems is jewelry and gemstones, born in the early-summer Si month; the month and hour stems each show a Gui Water Eating God, the classic BaZi combination for charm and performance. Birth data: a birth certificate on record

California did not use daylight saving time in 1926, so there is no hour to take off first. Los Angeles lies a little east of the Pacific time zone’s standard meridian (120° W), and in early June the equation of time adds about two more minutes, so true solar time runs about 9 minutes ahead of the clock. That is well clear of both ends of the Si hour, so the hour pillar is secure.

Four pillars and Ten Gods

Our strength engine scores season, roots, visible stems, and the balance of Resource and companions against Wealth, Officer and Output: below 0.35 reads weak, above 0.55 reads strong.

A score of 0.409 sits in the middle of the balanced range. Xin Metal is out of season, but it sits on its own prosperity branch, and Si and You form a half Metal combination, so its roots are actually firm; the Wu Earth hidden in the two Si branches adds Resource. So she is not weak, but not strong enough to spend freely either. The favorable elements are Earth (Resource) and Metal (companions); the unfavorable ones are Wood (Wealth) and Fire (Officer). The two Si branches plus the Bing-Yin year pillar give Fire and Wood real weight in the chart, and they are its main source of pressure.

On climate (tiao hou), an early-summer chart runs hot and dry and needs Water to moisten it. With two Gui Water Eating Gods on the stems, our engine judges that “the chart already has Water; it is moist enough.” Xin Metal is a jewel, and the old saying goes that jewels only shine once washed in water; these two Gui Waters are the sheen on her.

Three key features of the chart

1. Two Eating Gods on the stems: Eating God is the most approachable of the Ten Gods, standing for natural charm, humor, enjoyment and a gift for performance. With two showing at once, the charm is worn on the outside, visible at a glance. Her screen image, innocent and sensual at the same time, looks very much like an Eating God.
2. The Officer star combining with the self: the year stem Bing Fire, Direct Officer, combines with the Xin Metal Day Master. Direct Officer stands for rules, status and position, and in a woman’s chart it is traditionally also the husband star. When the Officer star reaches out to combine, the classics read it as “easily noticed by institutions and power.” She was signed by a studio, renamed, and packaged as a sex symbol: the system shaping her.
3. Yin-Si punishment, and two Si branches flanking You: the year branch Yin punishes and harms the two Si branches, so Fire and Wood (Wealth and Officer) keep pulling on each other in the chart. The punishment is not in the day pillar, but it surrounds her, which can be read as a constant tug-of-war in the world of fame and money.

Luck pillars: twenty years of favorable stems over unfavorable branches

For a woman born in a yang year (the year stem Bing is yang), the luck pillars run backwards, starting at about age 10.

The two luck pillars in which she became famous, Xin-Mao and Geng-Yin, have something in common: the stem is Metal (companions, favorable) and the branch is Wood (Wealth, unfavorable). Companions stand for the self, peers and competition; Wealth stands for money, material things and the resources one can control. A favorable stem over an unfavorable branch can be read as “standing firm on the surface, while money and circumstances keep wearing her down underneath.” She was one of the best-paid actresses of her time, yet fought the studio for years over contracts, pay and roles; in 1955 she simply started her own company, something very rare for a Hollywood actress then.

1946 is a Bing-Xu year: the stem Bing Fire is Direct Officer and the branch Xu Earth is Resource, an Officer-feeds-Resource pairing, traditionally a year of “being noticed by the establishment and given a title.” That was the year she got her studio contract and a new name. 1955 is a Yi-Wei year: the stem Yi Wood is Indirect Wealth (unfavorable) and the branch Wei Earth is Indirect Resource (favorable), and she chose to leave the studio and become her own boss to fight for better roles. Zi Wei Dou Shu chart

BaZi weighs the five elements and what the chart favors; Zi Wei looks at which stars fall in which palace. The two systems ask different questions, so the Zi Wei chart is shown on its own first, followed by where it agrees and disagrees with the BaZi reading.

The gold frame is the Life Palace; the shaded palaces are its three-sides-and-four-directions (Wealth, Career, Travel). Solid badges are the birth-year transformations (Lu, Quan, Ke, Ji), red names are the six malefic stars, and the small word after a major star is its brightness.

Marilyn Monroe’s Zi Wei chart has Qi Sha in the Life Palace (in Zi, bright), with Wu Qu and Tian Fu opposite in the Travel Palace. Tan Lang sits in the Wealth Palace and Po Jun in the Career Palace, so the Life, Wealth and Career palaces form a complete Sha-Po-Lang (Qi Sha, Po Jun, Tan Lang). Sha-Po-Lang is the most changeable and most pioneering pattern in Zi Wei, and the classics describe its owners as living through sharp rises and falls and refusing a quiet life. She came out of an orphanage and foster homes, rose to become the biggest female star in Hollywood, and in 1955 set up her own production company to negotiate with the studio: “cutting her own path” fits Sha-Po-Lang closely. Tan Lang in the Wealth Palace also carries Tian Ma; Tan Lang is Zi Wei’s star of romance and talent, and in the Wealth Palace it can be read as “earning a living through charm and performance.” The Body Palace falls in the Spouse Palace, which tradition reads as a life centered on love and partners; we only explain the traditional reading and make no comment on her marriages.

Western astrology chart

The same moment of birth, cast as a Western natal chart (tropical zodiac, Placidus houses, the same engine as our natal chart tool). A natal chart uses the sky at the moment of birth, so it needs no true-solar-time correction, but it does need the latitude of the birthplace to fix the Ascendant and the houses. BaZi and Zi Wei are both derived from the Chinese calendar, while a natal chart computes planetary positions directly. Because the three systems start from different places, the chart is listed on its own below, followed by where it agrees with the BaZi and Zi Wei readings.

Leo rises, and the chart ruler, the Sun, sits in the 10th house (public image and career): the Sun is placed at the most visible point of the whole chart, a chart made for the stage. A Gemini Sun adds wit and many sides; behind the innocent screen image was a woman who read widely, took acting classes and set up her own production company. The Moon is in Aquarius in the 7th house (partners) and square Saturn: an emotional need for freedom and distance, placed in the house of relationships and pinned down by Saturn’s pressure, which tradition reads as often feeling alone within close relationships. We do not use the chart to comment on her marriages; we only point out the tension in it. Not one of the ten planets is in an Earth sign, which makes an interesting comparison with the BaZi reading of two Eating Gods on the stems: talent shown outward, with an unsteady footing.
