Frida Kahlo’s BaZi: A Blaze of Midsummer Fire, and Seven Killings Charging Head-On

At 18, Frida Kahlo was riding a bus that collided with a streetcar; badly injured, she was confined to bed for months. Her mother fixed a mirror to the canopy of her bed, and she began to paint herself in it. She went on to become one of the defining painters of the twentieth century, and in 1939 the first Mexican painter whose work was acquired by the Louvre. Her birth time is on the birth register, and the chart comes out as Ding-Wei, Bing-Wu, Bing-Chen, Ren-Chen (丁未 丙午 丙辰 壬辰): Bing Fire born in high summer, Fire in the year, month and day pillars, and a single Ren Water Seven Killings in the hour charging straight at it. Our engine reads it as balanced. The neatest thing about this chart is that for the thirty years from painting in bed to a work in the Louvre, her luck pillars were favorable in both stem and branch.

Birth data: the birth register

Mexico only adopted standard time zones in 1922; in 1907 each place kept its own local time. Converting from local mean time with the early-July equation of time gives 8:26, safely inside the Chen hour. We also cast all twelve hours: in 10 of them the favorable elements are led by Earth and Metal, and only the Zi and Chou hours switch to Wood and Fire. We use the Chen hour from the birth register.

Four Pillars and Ten Gods

Our strength engine scores season, roots, exposed stems, Resource and companions against Wealth, Officer and Output; below 0.35 reads weak, above 0.55 reads strong.

A score of 0.520: balanced, leaning strong. Fire is already abundant, so the favorable elements are Earth (Output) to drain it and Metal (Wealth) to use it up; the unfavorable ones are more Wood (Resource) and Fire (companions). On climate (tiao hou), midsummer runs hot and dry, but the Ren Water in the hour and the Gui Water hidden in Chen can moisten the chart, and our engine judges that “the chart already has Water; it is moist enough.”

A blaze of Fire hit head-on by Seven Killings is traditionally read as “a life that must face violent shocks, and that finds its power because of them”; the two Chen Earth Eating Gods are Fire’s outlet, standing for creation and expression. Set on a painter who picked up the brush after a terrible injury, this structure is easy to make sense of. But it is a reading after the fact: most people born on the same day in the same hour never had that accident.

Luck pillars: thirty favorable years, all on the canvas

For a woman born in a yin year (the year stem Ding is yin), the luck pillars run forwards, starting at age 2.

“fav / unfav” reads the stem first, then the branch: whether each one’s element is favorable (useful), unfavorable, or neither (neutral) for this chart.

From 1918 to 1947, the three luck pillars Wu-Shen, Ji-You, Geng-Xu are favorable in both stem and branch. Earth is Output and Metal is Wealth: one stands for creation and expression, the other for work that is seen and collected. These thirty years run from age 11 to 40 and cover her whole creative life: picking up the brush, forming her style, and showing in New York and Paris.

Frida Kahlo died in 1954, aged only 47. We do not use BaZi to discuss health, lifespan or cause of death, on this page or any other famous chart.

Where it does not fit: the year of the crash

The crash came in 1925, a Yi-Chou year: the stem Yi Wood, Direct Resource, is unfavorable, while the branch Chou Earth, Hurting Officer, is favorable, so the year is half and half, and it falls inside a fully favorable luck pillar. By the usual reading this does not look like a year of major upheaval. We set it down as it is: the biggest turning point of her life left no clear signal in the yearly pillar. That is exactly why this site does not use BaZi to predict accidents.

Where does the chart miss her real life?

Zi Wei Dou Shu chart

The same birth time, cast in Zi Wei Dou Shu (San He school, the same engine as our Zi Wei chart tool, using the same true solar time as the BaZi chart above). BaZi weighs the five elements and what the chart favors; Zi Wei looks at which stars fall in which palace. The two systems ask different questions, so the Zi Wei chart is shown on its own first, followed by where it agrees and disagrees with the BaZi reading.

The gold frame is the Life Palace; the shaded palaces are its three-sides-and-four-directions (Wealth, Career, Travel). Solid badges are the birth-year transformations (Lu, Quan, Ke, Ji), red names are the six malefic stars, and the small word after a major star is its brightness.

Frida’s Zi Wei chart has Lian Zhen in the Life Palace (in Yin, brilliant), together with Ling Xing. Lian Zhen is the most complex star in Zi Wei Dou Shu; the old texts call it the “second peach blossom”, and it also stands for intense feeling, artistry and refusal to compromise. The opposite Travel Palace holds Tan Lang with Zuo Fu and Wen Qu: Tan Lang is the star of talent and desire, and Wen Qu governs art and literary grace. The Career Palace has Wu Qu and Tian Fu, both bright, plus You Bi, Wen Chang and Lu Cun, making it the brightest palace in the chart. The Spouse Palace holds Qi Sha, traditionally read as intense, turbulent relationships. She married the muralist Diego Rivera twice, and that relationship is itself the subject of many of her paintings; we only explain the traditional reading and do not comment on the marriage.

Western astrology chart

The same moment of birth, cast as a Western natal chart (tropical zodiac, Placidus houses, the same engine as our natal chart tool). A natal chart uses the sky at the moment of birth, so it needs no true-solar-time correction, but it does need the latitude of the birthplace to fix the Ascendant and the houses. BaZi and Zi Wei are both derived from the Chinese calendar, while a natal chart computes planetary positions directly. Because the three systems start from different places, the chart is listed on its own below, followed by where it agrees with the BaZi and Zi Wei readings.

Leo is rising, so the chart ruler is the Sun itself. Leo is the sign most concerned with self, performance and “being seen”. She painted more than fifty self-portraits and said she painted herself because she was so often alone and because she was the subject she knew best; this placement invites the comparison. The Sun is in Cancer and exactly opposite Mars, with an orb of 0.0°. Cancer centers on home, feeling and the body’s sensations; Mars stands for will, conflict and pain. The two pull head-on, which tradition reads as “a lifelong wrestling match between feeling and will”. The Moon is exalted in Taurus, drawn to the concrete, the sensual and saturated color, which matches the vivid Mexican palette of her paintings. A hindsight warning: these parallels are very apt, and precisely for that reason, remember that we knew her story before we read the chart.
