Donald Trump’s BaZi: All Fire and Earth, No Wealth Star. How Is He a Property Tycoon?

Trump released his birth certificate himself, and the time on it is clear. The chart comes out as Bing-Xu, Jia-Wu, Ji-Wei, Ji-Si (丙戌 甲午 己未 己巳): seven of the eight characters are Fire or Earth, and even counting the stems hidden in the branches, there is not a drop of Water. For a Ji Earth Day Master, Water is Wealth. A man who got rich from real estate and turned his name into a brand has no Wealth star in his natal chart. This page lays the chart out and looks at where his money, his bankruptcies and his court cases each fall in BaZi terms.

Birth data

New York was on daylight saving time in the summer of 1946, with the clocks an hour ahead, so we first take off 60 minutes and then correct for longitude and the equation of time. 10:54 on the clock becomes about 9:59 true solar time. Some websites skip the daylight-saving step and get 10:59; both land in the Si hour (9:00–11:00), so this chart has no dispute over the hour.

Four Pillars and Ten Gods

Our strength engine: below 0.35 reads weak, above 0.55 reads strong. The Resource share is the proportion of the chart’s total strength held by a single Ten God in the engine’s “illness and remedy” check. The Wealth count includes stems hidden in the branches.

A score of 0.854 makes this the strongest chart of any famous person we have cast so far. In season, rooted (all four branches are roots for the Day Master), and supported by Resource: all three conditions are met. A strong chart needs draining (Metal), controlling (Wood) and spending (Water), so the favorable elements are Water, Metal and Wood and the unfavorable ones are Fire and Earth.

There is a problem even more pressing than strength: the chart is too dry. Summer Fire and Earth with no Water is what the tradition calls “blazing Fire, parched Earth”, like a field cracked by the sun. Our climate rule flags it as “hot and dry, and short of Water”, so Water here is both Wealth and the climate remedy: the thing the chart lacks most and needs most.

The big question: no Wealth star, so where does the money come from?

Most people imagine that a rich person’s chart must have strong Wealth stars. Trump’s is the opposite: it has none. We think there are three ways to make sense of it.

1. His wealth takes the form of Resource: property, a name, a family

In traditional symbolism, Resource stands for protection, backing and reputation, and is often used to read houses and real estate. Resource (Fire) is what Trump’s chart has most of, holding 55% of the chart’s strength.

Compare his life. He started out in his father’s real estate company; a 2018 investigation by The New York Times estimated that he received at least $400 million in today’s dollars from his father over the years. The most profitable business of his later life was licensing the name “Trump” to other people’s buildings, products and shows. Real estate, family resources and a name: all three are images of Resource, not of Wealth.

2. A chart without Wealth spends a lifetime chasing it

Wealth is the one thing a strong chart needs most and this chart does not have at all. Charts like this rarely look “poor”. Instead they show a strong hunger for deals, for winning, for “bigger”, and their assets tend to be things like buildings, land and equity that are hard to turn into cash. Trump’s crisis around 1990 looked exactly like that: towers, casinos and an airline in his name, but not enough cash to keep them running. Lots of assets and little cash is the classic situation of “much Resource, no Wealth”.

3. The real Wealth arrives through the luck pillars

What the natal chart lacks has to be brought in by a luck pillar or a year. In the table below you can see that his clear rises came when Metal and Water arrived, and his worst bankruptcies came in the pillar where Fire and Earth were strongest.

Luck pillars, ten years at a time

For a man born in a yang year (the year stem Bing is yang), the luck pillars run forwards, starting at age 9.

A few pillars are worth a closer look:

1. The Wu-Xu Rob Wealth pillar (1984–1993) was the decade of bankruptcy. Wu Earth is Rob Wealth, and Xu is the storehouse of Fire; for a chart already overloaded with Fire and Earth, it is more fuel on the fire. Rob Wealth literally means “something that takes your Wealth away”, and his natal chart had no Wealth to begin with. In the early 1990s his Taj Mahal casino, the Plaza Hotel and other businesses filed for bankruptcy protection one after another, he personally carried large guaranteed debts, and in the same period his first marriage ended.
2. The Geng-Zi Hurting Officer pillar (2004–2013) was the decade of the comeback. Geng is Metal and Zi is Water: his first luck pillar in which both stem and branch are favorable. Hurting Officer stands for performance, speech and media, and this is exactly when he began hosting a reality show and went from property developer to a household name on national television. Zi Water also clashes with the month branch Wu Fire, breaking open the strongest Fire in the chart; the parched Earth finally meets Water.
3. The Xin-Chou Eating God pillar (2014–2023): elected, and tangled in lawsuits. Xin Metal is favorable, but the branch Chou joins the natal Xu and Wei to complete the “Chou–Xu–Wei Three Punishments”. Traditionally the Three Punishments are associated with disputes and litigation. In this pillar he became president, and in this pillar he was impeached twice and faced multiple criminal indictments.

A “follow the strong” chart, or simply strong? Testing it against the luck pillars

With the chart full of Fire and Earth and the Day Master extremely strong, some practitioners would call it a “follow the strong” chart (cong qiang) or a “Farming” structure (jia se ge): go with the Fire and Earth, which would then be favorable. The two readings give opposite favorable elements, so we can test them against the luck pillars:

What actually happened supports the “strong, favoring Metal and Water” reading. Our engine does not call it a follow chart either: the year branch Xu hides Xin Metal and the hour branch Si hides Geng Metal, so the chart still has an outlet to drain its strength and is not completely one-sided.

Three key years

2020 is a case that does not fit, yet can be explained. The Metal and Water of a Geng-Zi year are both favorable for him, so on a simple favorable/unfavorable reading it should have been a good year, and he lost the election. Look closer: Geng Metal is Hurting Officer and Jia Wood is Direct Officer, which the tradition calls “Hurting Officer meets Officer”: Hurting Officer strikes down the Direct Officer, the star of status and office. The favorable elements arrived, but they hit precisely the character that stands for “office”. Favorable versus unfavorable is only the first layer; you also have to see where in the chart a year lands.

In 2024, Jia Wood, the Direct Officer, shows again and combines with the Day Master, and Direct Officer stands for position and power. The same year he was convicted. The Officer star and a court case turned up in the same year; BaZi can only flag that “office” (the Chinese word guan covers both official posts and lawsuits) will weigh heavily, not which kind it will be.

Where does the chart miss his real life?

Two more things BaZi cannot explain:

• The direction of a career. Parched Fire and Earth and a comeback in a Hurting Officer pillar can be read as “rising again through performance and fame”, but nothing in it says a property developer would become president. Roughly ten thousand boys worldwide were born in the same two-hour window on 14 June 1946; only one of them became president.
• The conditions of the times. The rise of reality television, the arrival of social media and the polarization of American politics gave a man whose “name is the brand” a direct path to the White House. None of that is in a chart.

Now: the Ren-Yin Direct Wealth pillar from 2024

From 2024 he entered the Ren-Yin Direct Wealth luck pillar. Its stem, Ren Water, is the first time in his life that a Wealth star shows directly on a luck-pillar stem, and it is the Water he lacks most. But the branch Yin joins the natal Wu and Xu to complete the “Yin–Wu–Xu Fire combination”, adding yet another layer of Fire. Water comes from above while Fire burns below; the stem and branch of this pillar pull in opposite directions.

We make no prediction about any election, court case or policy outcome, and we do not comment on political positions. All we can say is that, for this chart, the tug of war between Water and Fire will be pronounced during this decade.

Zi Wei Dou Shu chart

The same birth time, cast in Zi Wei Dou Shu (San He school, the same engine as our Zi Wei chart tool, using the same true solar time as the BaZi chart above). BaZi weighs the five elements and what the chart favors; Zi Wei looks at which stars fall in which palace. The two systems ask different questions, so the Zi Wei chart is shown on its own first, followed by where it agrees and disagrees with the BaZi reading.

The gold frame is the Life Palace; the shaded palaces are its three-sides-and-four-directions (Wealth, Career, Travel). Solid badges are the birth-year transformations (Lu, Quan, Ke, Ji), red names are the six malefic stars, and the small word after a major star is its brightness.

Trump’s Zi Wei chart has Tai Yang and Tai Yin together in the Life Palace (the Chou palace): the Sun is dim there and the Moon is brilliant. The classics read this pairing as inward-looking, emotionally changeable, swinging between ideals and reality. That does not match his loud, outgoing public image, and it is the clearest mismatch among the Zi Wei charts in this series. The Wealth Palace is empty and the Career Palace holds a fallen Tian Liang, so by Zi Wei standards none of the Life, Wealth and Career palaces is strongly placed. The BaZi reading (a strong Ji Earth that favors Water, Metal and Wood) describes someone who can carry weight and push hard, which is actually closer to how he operates than the Zi Wei chart. The two systems give different pictures of the same person, which is why this site shows the two charts separately.

Western astrology chart

The same moment of birth, cast as a Western natal chart (tropical zodiac, Placidus houses, the same engine as our natal chart tool). A natal chart uses the sky at the moment of birth, so it needs no true-solar-time correction, but it does need the latitude of the birthplace to fix the Ascendant and the houses. BaZi and Zi Wei are both derived from the Chinese calendar, while a natal chart computes planetary positions directly. Because the three systems start from different places, the chart is listed on its own below, followed by where it agrees with the BaZi and Zi Wei readings.

Leo rising, with the chart ruler the Sun in the 10th house (career and public image): the same arrangement as Marilyn Monroe, a chart built for the stage. A Gemini Sun is about talk and talking points; a Sagittarius Moon is blunt, expansive and hard to fence in, and the Sun and Moon are exactly opposite each other, so the public face and the private need pull against each other. Mars in Leo sits in the 12th house just before the Ascendant, traditionally read as a fierce will to win that tends to break out in unexpected ways. The Ascendant is at 29° Leo: a birth-certificate time just 1 minute later would give Virgo rising.
