Capricorn: Personality, Strengths, Love and Career
Goal-driven and enduring; willing to put in the hard years for a long-term payoff. Takes responsibility seriously. This page starts from Capricorn’s element, modality and ruling planet, then covers its strengths and blind spots, how it loves, work and money, and, using our chart engine, where the Mercury and Venus of Capricorn people actually fall, which is why two Capricorns can be so different.

The core of Capricorn
Capricorn is a cardinal earth sign ruled by Saturn, and its season begins at the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year. Fittingly, its theme is carving out a path on your own when conditions are at their hardest. Earth makes Capricorn practical, the cardinal mode makes it the one who sets goals and starts climbing, and Saturn governs time, duty, structure and tests.
Capricorns often come across as mature and serious, the kind of kid adults called an old soul. They believe in effort and in time, and they’ll accept hardship now for results later. Many Capricorns seem to age in reverse: they carry a lot of responsibility young and work harder than their peers, then in midlife those years of building start to pay off, and they grow lighter, easier and funnier.
Capricorn strengths
- Responsibility: Hand a Capricorn a task and they own it to the end, which makes them the most dependable people in any organization.
- Stamina and discipline: They can put up with long stretches of tedium and strain, climbing toward a goal one step at a time.
- Practicality: They care about what actually works, don’t get swept away by vague ideals, and excel at turning plans into results.
- Deadpan humor: Get to know one and you’ll find a dry wit; a single understated line from a Capricorn can keep people laughing for a long time.
Capricorn blind spots
- Too serious: Everything becomes a task, even rest has to be efficient, and the people around them can feel the pressure.
- Bottled-up feelings: Showing weakness seems pointless to them, so emotions get packed away until loneliness sets in or something suddenly gives.
- Work comes first: Their sense of worth rests heavily on work and status, and family, friends and their own well-being get neglected.
- Pessimism and caution: They picture the worst case first and often say no to new opportunities before giving them a chance.
Capricorn in love
Capricorns approach love carefully. They aren’t interested in something casual, and early on they’re already asking whether this person fits a long-term future. Their love isn’t flashy, but it’s solid: they’ll plan a future with you and shoulder responsibility when you need it. A Capricorn needs a partner who understands how busy they are and who can also help them unwind.
Respect a Capricorn’s time and goals, and let them know they don’t have to carry everything alone. They aren’t good at putting feelings into words, so what they do tells you more than what they say. Pull them away from work now and then; they’ll grumble, and they’ll be grateful.
Capricorn man
The Capricorn man tends to be steady and ambitious, thinking years ahead even when he’s young, with a clear plan for his career. He isn’t big on sweet talk but takes commitment seriously and looks after his household in practical ways. Opening him up takes patience, and it helps to show him you’re reliable.
Capricorn woman
The Capricorn woman is often capable, independent and goal-driven, the colleague people quietly admire. She values responsibility and maturity in a partner more than fleeting romance. She doesn’t need rescuing; she wants someone to climb alongside her who can also catch her when she’s worn out.
For love, sharper clues come from your Venus sign (how you love and what attracts you) and Moon sign (what makes you feel safe); the Sun sign is only one piece.
Capricorn at work and with money
Capricorn suits work with clear structure and long-term growth: management, civil service, finance, engineering, architecture, law, accounting, operations and running a company. They’re strong at rising through large organizations, and just as suited to building their own business brick by brick.
Capricorns are natural long-range planners with money, focused on building assets and protection and happy to delay gratification. Their lesson is being too frugal and treating money as their only source of security. Spending some of it on things that bring real joy is an investment of its own.
Under stress, and the lifelong lesson
When stress rises, Capricorns work even harder and fill every hour, as if one more push will fix it. They rarely admit to being tired until their body or mood forces the issue. Deliberately scheduling time that doesn’t have to produce anything is a necessary discipline for them.
Capricorn’s lifelong lesson is allowing themselves to soften. Achievement matters, but life isn’t only the summit. When a Capricorn learns to enjoy the climb and to let others see their vulnerable side, they discover they don’t have to hold up the whole world alone, and the load gets lighter.
The three decans of Capricorn
Each sign spans 30° and can be split into three 10° decans. Traditionally, being born early, midway or late in Capricorn adds the coloring of a different planet. Classical astrology assigns decans by the Chaldean order (faces); modern astrology usually uses the rulers of the three signs of the same element. Both are listed:
| Decan | Starts around (Taipei) | Chaldean ruler (traditional) | Triplicity ruler (modern) | Coloring |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1st decan (Capricorn 0°–10°) | from Dec 22 | Jupiter | Saturn | extra optimism and generosity |
| 2nd decan (Capricorn 10°–20°) | from Jan 1 (Dec 31–Jan 1) | Mars | Venus | extra drive and competitiveness |
| 3rd decan (Capricorn 20°–30°) | from Jan 10 (Jan 10–Jan 11) | Sun | Mercury | extra confidence and presence |
Dates are our own calculation of when the Sun reaches Capricorn 10° and 20° in Taipei time, 1950–2030; the range in brackets covers all 81 years. The coloring follows the Chaldean ruler and is astrological tradition.
Why two Capricorns can be so different
Your Sun sign tells you which stretch of the year you were born in, but Mercury (how you think and talk) and Venus (how you love, what you like) are not always in the same sign as the Sun. We calculated every day from 1950 to 2030:
Every day 1950–2030 at noon Taipei time: 2,384 days with the Sun in Capricorn, calculated by our engine.
Mercury never strays more than about 28° from the Sun, so a Capricorn’s Mercury can only be in Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius; Venus reaches about 47°, so its range is wider. Add a Moon that changes sign every two and a half days and an Ascendant that changes every two hours or so, and two Capricorns may share almost nothing else in their charts. Capricorn compatibility with the other signs
Sign compatibility looks at how far apart two signs sit on the zodiac, using the same rules as aspects in a chart. Capricorn and the other eleven:
| Other sign | Relationship | Traditional reading |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | Square (same modality) | Same modality, clashing elements: more friction, and more spark |
| Taurus | Trine (same element) | Same element: the most natural rapport |
| Gemini | Quincunx (five apart) | Nothing in common by element or modality; needs conscious adjustment |
| Cancer | Opposite | Across the zodiac: complementary, magnetic, and prone to tug-of-war |
| Leo | Quincunx (five apart) | Nothing in common by element or modality; needs conscious adjustment |
| Virgo | Trine (same element) | Same element: the most natural rapport |
| Libra | Square (same modality) | Same modality, clashing elements: more friction, and more spark |
| Scorpio | Sextile (compatible element) | Compatible elements that feed each other; an easy, lively match |
| Sagittarius | Adjacent | Different element and rhythm, like next-door neighbors; takes time to adjust |
| Aquarius | Adjacent | Different element and rhythm, like next-door neighbors; takes time to adjust |
| Pisces | Sextile (compatible element) | Compatible elements that feed each other; an easy, lively match |
One caution: across 2,100 random pairs we tested, the traditionally “best” and “worst” sign pairings differed by only about 2.3 soft-minus-hard aspects between the two full charts, out of roughly 34 aspects per pair. Sun-sign compatibility makes good conversation; for a real read on two people, use a synastry chart. See also the compatibility chart.
Famous Capricorns
Among the people in our celebrity charts, these have the Sun in Capricorn: Cary Grant (Moon in Aquarius, Libra rising); Elvis Presley (Moon in Pisces, Sagittarius rising); Martin Luther King Jr. (Moon in Pisces, Taurus rising); Muhammad Ali (Moon in Aquarius, Leo rising); Qi Baishi (Moon in Virgo or Libra). Same Sun sign, different Moons and Ascendants, very different lives.
How Capricorn lines up with BaZi
Capricorn’s dates straddle two Chinese solar months: the first half falls in the Zi (Rat) month, and after Minor Cold (Xiaohan) the Chou (Ox) month begins. That is no coincidence: BaZi months change exactly when the Sun reaches 15° of a sign, so on the Sun the two systems agree. Beyond that, BaZi works with stems, branches and the five elements, and Western astrology with planets and signs, so there is no conversion table; see BaZi vs. the Birth Chart.

A straight word: your Sun sign is one planet out of ten
This page describes the tendencies astrological tradition associates with the Sun in this sign; they are tradition, not scientific findings. People with the same Sun sign have different Moons, Ascendants, Mercuries and Venuses, and those differences can be large. Our own numbers show it: Mercury shares the Sun’s sign only about half the time, Venus only a quarter of the time. So if parts of this page do not sound like you, that is normal, and a full birth chart will be far more accurate. Capricorn FAQ
What are the dates for Capricorn?
In Taipei time Capricorn usually runs Dec 22 to Jan 19. The exact moment the Sun changes sign shifts every year, and between 1950 and 2030 Capricorn began anywhere from Dec 21 to Dec 23; in the Americas the date can be a day earlier. If you were born on the cusp, cast a chart with your birth year and time.
Are Capricorns workaholics?
Capricorn is ruled by Saturn, the planet of duty and achievement, and it’s a cardinal earth sign that sets its own goals, so many Capricorns do take work very seriously. How far that goes depends on the Moon and the other planets, though. A Capricorn with the Moon in a water sign often puts family just as high.
Why do people say Capricorns get better with age?
It’s a common idea in astrology that comes from Saturn’s link to time. Saturn rewards long-term effort, so the struggles of youth gradually turn into results and ease. It describes a tendency, and not every Capricorn follows it.
Do a Capricorn’s Moon and rising signs matter?
A lot. The Sun sign describes your core self, the Moon your emotional needs, and the Ascendant your first impression and how you meet the world. Two Capricorns with different Moons feel things very differently. The Ascendant needs a birth time; try the rising sign calculator.
What planet rules Capricorn?
Capricorn is ruled by Saturn. Where that planet sits in your chart, by sign and house, shapes how your Capricorn side comes out.
