Martin Luther King Jr.’s BaZi: Geng Metal in Winter, and an Eating God That Shows

Martin Luther King Jr. was born into a minister’s family in Atlanta. He entered college at 15, led the Montgomery bus boycott at 26, delivered “I Have a Dream” at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington at 34, and at 35 became the youngest winner of the Nobel Peace Prize up to that time. His birth is recorded at 12 noon, and the chart comes out as Wu-Chen, Yi-Chou, Geng-Shen, Ren-Wu: Geng Metal born in deep winter, with Ren Water, Eating God, showing on the hour stem. Our engine reads it as strong. The thing most worth looking at in this chart is that the decade in which he led the civil rights movement was a luck pillar unfavorable in both stem and branch.

Birth data

Atlanta lies a little over five degrees east of the Central time zone’s standard meridian, so the local sun runs about twenty-two minutes ahead of the clock, and in mid-January the equation of time takes back about nine minutes; converted, that gives 12:13. If the clock was actually on Eastern time, the conversion gives 11:13, still in the Wu hour, and the BaZi is exactly the same. We also cast all twelve possible hours: 10 read strong and the rest balanced.

The Four Pillars and the Ten Gods

Our strength engine scores season, roots, visible stems, and the balance of Resource and companions against Wealth, Officer and Output; below 0.35 reads weak, above 0.55 reads strong.

A score of 0.566, just over the threshold for strong. The Geng Metal is fed by three Earths (the Chou and Chen branches and the Wu Earth stem) and rooted in Shen, so it can hold its own. The favorable elements are Water (Output) to let its talent flow out, Wood (Wealth) to spend its strength, and Fire (Officer) to forge it; the unfavorable ones are more Earth (Resource) and Metal (companions).

A strong chart that wants Output is traditionally read as “someone with something to say, and the ability to say it”. Ren Water, Eating God, shows on the hour stem, backed by the Shen–Chen pull toward Water: this is a chart with great force that needs an outlet. What he is most remembered for is exactly that, the speeches that changed an era.

Luck pillars: the decade he led the civil rights movement was unfavorable throughout

For a man born in a yang year (the year stem Wu is yang), the luck pillars run forward, starting at about age 7.

“fav / unfav” reads the stem first, then the branch: whether each one’s element is favorable (useful), unfavorable, or neither (neutral) for this chart.

His first two luck pillars, covering his schooling and ordination, Bing-Yin and Ding-Mao, are favorable in both stem and branch: Fire is Officer and Wood is Wealth, meaning standing and resources arrived on schedule, and he moved smoothly from precocious student to doctorate and pulpit.

From 1955 comes the Wu-Chen luck pillar: the stem Wu Earth and the branch Chen Earth are both Indirect Resource, and both are unfavorable, the very Earth that makes an already strong Geng Metal stronger and more blocked. In exactly these ten years he led the most important campaigns of the American civil rights movement, was arrested nearly thirty times, had his home bombed, and lived for years under surveillance and threat. On him, the “unfavorable” of this luck pillar looks almost literal: pressure, resistance and cost. Yet in the same luck pillar he also changed a nation.

King was assassinated in 1968, at only 39. We do not use BaZi to discuss death or accidents, and that holds for every chart in this series.

A few key years

1963 is a Gui-Mao year: the stem Gui Water is Hurting Officer and the branch Mao Wood is Direct Wealth, so both are favorable, and they are precisely the Water and Wood this chart needs most. That year he first wrote his famous letter from a Birmingham jail cell, then stood before a quarter of a million people and said “I have a dream”. Inside a luck pillar unfavorable from top to bottom, the most decisive year happens to be entirely favorable. It is a contrast hard not to notice, but we only set it out and go no further.

Where does the chart miss his real life?

Zi Wei Dou Shu chart

The same birth time, cast in Zi Wei Dou Shu (San He school, the same engine as our Zi Wei chart tool, using the same true solar time as the BaZi chart above). BaZi weighs the five elements and what the chart favors; Zi Wei looks at which stars fall in which palace. The two systems ask different questions, so the Zi Wei chart is shown on its own first, followed by where it agrees and disagrees with the BaZi reading.

The gold frame is the Life Palace; the shaded palaces are its three-sides-and-four-directions (Wealth, Career, Travel). Solid badges are the birth-year transformations (Lu, Quan, Ke, Ji), red names are the six malefic stars, and the small word after a major star is its brightness.

King’s Zi Wei chart has Tian Xiang in the Life Palace (in the Wei palace), with the Body Palace in the same place and Tian Yue alongside. Tian Xiang is the “seal star”: the classics describe it as devoted to fairness and principle and good at mediating, the star of someone who stands up for others. The opposite Travel Palace holds Zi Wei and Po Jun, plus Tian Kui. The emperor star and the pioneering star sitting together in the Travel Palace is traditionally read as “a large presence out in the world and on the public stage, of the kind that breaks the old order”. For a minister who used nonviolent resistance to bring down segregation, the match is close. The Wealth Palace holds Tian Fu with Zuo Fu, and the Career Palace is empty. All of these are readings made with hindsight.

Western astrology chart

The same moment of birth, cast as a Western natal chart (tropical zodiac, Placidus houses, the same engine as our natal chart tool). A natal chart uses the sky at the moment of birth, so it needs no true-solar-time correction, but it does need the latitude of the birthplace to fix the Ascendant and the houses. BaZi and Zi Wei are both derived from the Chinese calendar, while a natal chart computes planetary positions directly. Because the three systems start from different places, the chart is listed on its own below, followed by where it agrees with the BaZi and Zi Wei readings.

The Sun is in Capricorn in the 9th house, conjunct the Midheaven within 3.1°. The Midheaven stands for a person’s place and mission in society; Capricorn values duty, discipline and long-range goals; and the 9th house governs religion, faith, ideals and distant horizons. For a minister who turned religious conviction into a social movement, the placement is almost textbook. The Moon and the chart ruler Venus are both in Pisces in the 11th house, with Venus exalted there; the 11th house governs groups, communities and shared ideals, and Pisces is the sign of compassion and sacrifice. Taurus rising brings steadiness and persistence, which sits beside the patience of his nonviolent strategy. A hindsight warning: the recorded time is exactly noon, which may itself be rounded, and born just 41 minutes earlier he would have Aries rising.
