Virgo: Personality, Strengths, Love and Career
Methodical and detail-minded; sees what is broken and wants to fix it. Harder on itself than on anyone else. This page starts from Virgo’s element, modality and ruling planet, then covers its strengths and blind spots, how it loves, work and money, and, using our chart engine, where the Mercury and Venus of Virgo people actually fall, which is why two Virgos can be so different.

The core of Virgo
Virgo is an earth sign and a mutable sign, ruled by Mercury. Earth stands for the practical and concrete, mutable for adjusting and improving, and Mercury governs analysis and thought. Virgos notice details by nature, and by nature they want to make things better. A gap in a process begs to be fixed, a crooked object begs to be straightened, and a person who is struggling makes them want to help find a solution.
Virgo often gets labeled nitpicky or critical, but most of that criticism is aimed at themselves. They hold a very high standard and tend to feel they’re never quite good enough. When a Virgo puts that care into serving others, they’re the most reassuring partner you could have. When it turns inward, it easily becomes anxiety and self-criticism.
Virgo strengths
- Detail-oriented: They see what others miss: typos, numbers that don’t add up, the exact step where a process gets stuck. A Virgo often spots it at a glance.
- Practical: They dislike empty talk, want methods and evidence, and follow through on what they say they’ll do, step by step.
- Helpful: A Virgo’s love often looks like getting things sorted out for you. They help quietly and rarely ask for credit.
- Always improving: They’re willing to learn and to correct course, doing things a little better today than yesterday. Over time that builds real expertise.
Virgo blind spots
- Perfectionism: They always feel it could be better, so they hold on to work too long, or keep second-guessing it after it’s done.
- Worrying: Their mind keeps running through everything that could go wrong, which breeds anxiety and exhausts them.
- More critique than praise: They tend to see the problem first, so what the other person hears is often just “this part is wrong.”
- Hard to accept help: They’re used to handling and fixing things alone, rarely ask for help, and feel awkward being looked after.
Virgo in love
Virgo is careful in love. They watch for a long time and open up only once they’re sure you can be trusted. Their love isn’t dramatic; it’s practical care. They remember your allergies, help organize your schedule, and have everything ready when you’re sick. A Virgo needs their effort to be appreciated, and they also need someone who lets them relax instead of always being the caretaker.
With a Virgo, notice what they do for you and say so; it makes them feel secure. Their suggestions usually come from a real wish to help, not from judging you. Every so often, pull them away from the plan to do something with no purpose at all, and they’ll gradually learn to unwind.
Virgo man
A Virgo man tends to be polite and organized, with his own set of rules for living. He isn’t much for grand romantic gestures, but he’s reliable. He keeps your concerns in mind and quietly takes care of them. He may expect a fair amount from a partner, but he expects even more from himself.
Virgo woman
A Virgo woman is smart and perceptive, with clear standards of her own. She may look calm on the outside while thinking about a great deal on the inside. She values people who are responsible and organized. Treating her well means respecting how she does things and letting her know that imperfect is fine.
For love, sharper clues come from your Venus sign (how you love and what attracts you) and Moon sign (what makes you feel safe); the Sun sign is only one piece.
Virgo at work and with money
Virgo suits work that demands precision, analysis and service: accounting, auditing, research, editing, engineering, quality control, healthcare-related fields, nutrition, administration, data analysis. They’re the best gatekeepers on a team, but they should avoid taking every detail onto themselves. Learning to share the load is what lets them go the distance.
Virgos are usually disciplined with money. They track spending, compare prices and make budgets. Their issue isn’t overspending but over-worrying: fearing there won’t be enough, putting off enjoyment indefinitely, or delaying decisions because they’re afraid of choosing wrong.
Under stress, and the lifelong lesson
Under stress, a Virgo gets pickier and more tense, furiously tidying rooms or lists as if controlling the details could restore a sense of safety. What they need most in those moments is permission to aim for “good enough” first.
The Virgo lesson is accepting imperfection. The world won’t fall apart over one small mistake, and they don’t need a perfect score on everything to be worthy of love. When a Virgo can treat themselves with the same kindness they show others, their attention to detail turns into real wisdom.
The three decans of Virgo
Each sign spans 30° and can be split into three 10° decans. Traditionally, being born early, midway or late in Virgo adds the coloring of a different planet. Classical astrology assigns decans by the Chaldean order (faces); modern astrology usually uses the rulers of the three signs of the same element. Both are listed:
| Decan | Starts around (Taipei) | Chaldean ruler (traditional) | Triplicity ruler (modern) | Coloring |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1st decan (Virgo 0°–10°) | from Aug 23 | Sun | Mercury | extra confidence and presence |
| 2nd decan (Virgo 10°–20°) | from Sep 2 (Sep 2–Sep 3) | Venus | Saturn | extra softness and taste |
| 3rd decan (Virgo 20°–30°) | from Sep 13 (Sep 12–Sep 13) | Mercury | Venus | extra wit and curiosity |
Dates are our own calculation of when the Sun reaches Virgo 10° and 20° in Taipei time, 1950–2030; the range in brackets covers all 81 years. The coloring follows the Chaldean ruler and is astrological tradition.
Why two Virgos can be so different
Your Sun sign tells you which stretch of the year you were born in, but Mercury (how you think and talk) and Venus (how you love, what you like) are not always in the same sign as the Sun. We calculated every day from 1950 to 2030:
Every day 1950–2030 at noon Taipei time: 2,503 days with the Sun in Virgo, calculated by our engine.
Mercury never strays more than about 28° from the Sun, so a Virgo’s Mercury can only be in Leo, Virgo, Libra; Venus reaches about 47°, so its range is wider. Add a Moon that changes sign every two and a half days and an Ascendant that changes every two hours or so, and two Virgos may share almost nothing else in their charts. To see your own full picture, look up your rising sign and Moon sign, or cast a birth chart.
Virgo compatibility with the other signs
Sign compatibility looks at how far apart two signs sit on the zodiac, using the same rules as aspects in a chart. Virgo and the other eleven:
| Other sign | Relationship | Traditional reading |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | Quincunx (five apart) | Nothing in common by element or modality; needs conscious adjustment |
| Taurus | Trine (same element) | Same element: the most natural rapport |
| Gemini | Square (same modality) | Same modality, clashing elements: more friction, and more spark |
| Cancer | Sextile (compatible element) | Compatible elements that feed each other; an easy, lively match |
| Leo | Adjacent | Different element and rhythm, like next-door neighbors; takes time to adjust |
| Libra | Adjacent | Different element and rhythm, like next-door neighbors; takes time to adjust |
| Scorpio | Sextile (compatible element) | Compatible elements that feed each other; an easy, lively match |
| Sagittarius | Square (same modality) | Same modality, clashing elements: more friction, and more spark |
| Capricorn | Trine (same element) | Same element: the most natural rapport |
| Aquarius | Quincunx (five apart) | Nothing in common by element or modality; needs conscious adjustment |
| Pisces | Opposite | Across the zodiac: complementary, magnetic, and prone to tug-of-war |
One caution: across 2,100 random pairs we tested, the traditionally “best” and “worst” sign pairings differed by only about 2.3 soft-minus-hard aspects between the two full charts, out of roughly 34 aspects per pair. Sun-sign compatibility makes good conversation; for a real read on two people, use a synastry chart. See also the compatibility chart.
Famous Virgos
Among the people in our celebrity charts, these have the Sun in Virgo: Warren Buffett (Moon in Sagittarius, Sagittarius rising); Greta Garbo (Moon in Taurus, Gemini rising). Same Sun sign, different Moons and Ascendants, very different lives.
How Virgo lines up with BaZi
Virgo’s dates straddle two Chinese solar months: the first half falls in the Shen (Monkey) month, and after White Dew (Bailu) the You (Rooster) month begins. That is no coincidence: BaZi months change exactly when the Sun reaches 15° of a sign, so on the Sun the two systems agree. Beyond that, BaZi works with stems, branches and the five elements, and Western astrology with planets and signs, so there is no conversion table; see BaZi vs. the Birth Chart.

A straight word: your Sun sign is one planet out of ten
This page describes the tendencies astrological tradition associates with the Sun in this sign; they are tradition, not scientific findings. People with the same Sun sign have different Moons, Ascendants, Mercuries and Venuses, and those differences can be large. Our own numbers show it: Mercury shares the Sun’s sign only about half the time, Venus only a quarter of the time. So if parts of this page do not sound like you, that is normal, and a full birth chart will be far more accurate. Virgo FAQ
What are the dates for Virgo?
In Taipei time Virgo usually runs Aug 23 to Sep 22. The exact moment the Sun changes sign shifts every year, and between 1950 and 2030 Virgo began anywhere from Aug 22 to Aug 24; in the Americas the date can be a day earlier. If you were born on the cusp, cast a chart with your birth year and time.
Are all Virgos neat freaks?
Not necessarily. What defines Virgo is caring about order and detail, which might show up as tidiness, or just as easily in work processes, writing or numbers. Plenty of Virgos have messy rooms, but their files are almost always well organized.
Why are Virgos so critical?
Virgo is a mutable earth sign ruled by Mercury, the planet of analysis, so they habitually find the problem first and then work out how to improve it. Most of the time they’re trying to help, even if the delivery is blunt. In truth, they’re harder on themselves than on anyone else.
Do a Virgo’s Moon and rising signs matter?
A lot. The Sun sign describes your core self, the Moon your emotional needs, and the Ascendant your first impression and how you meet the world. Two Virgos with different Moons feel things very differently. The Ascendant needs a birth time; try the rising sign calculator.
What planet rules Virgo?
Virgo is ruled by Mercury. Where that planet sits in your chart, by sign and house, shapes how your Virgo side comes out.
