Elvis Presley’s BaZi: A Weak Chart Full of Talent, and a Twin Who Shared It

Elvis’s birth time comes from the delivering doctor’s record, which puts it in the most reliable tier of any celebrity chart. The chart is Jia-Xu, Ding-Chou, Jia-Shen, Bing-Yin: Jia Wood born in deep winter, with Hurting Officer and Eating God both showing in the stems, the textbook BaZi combination for a performer. There is something rarer, too. He had a twin brother, born about 35 minutes before him, who died at birth. Born in the same two-hour window, the two brothers have charts that do not differ by a single character. This page walks from the chart to the luck pillars, and uses Elvis to answer a question we are often asked: if two people share a chart, why do they live two different lives?

Birth data: a doctor’s record, the most reliable tier for a celebrity

The two accounts are more than an hour apart, but converted to true solar time (the local sun time BaZi uses) both land in the Yin hour, so the BaZi is identical and there is no need to choose. Tupelo lies a little east of the Central time zone’s standard meridian (90° W), and in early January the equation of time pulls the clock back a few minutes; the two effects nearly cancel, so clock time and true solar time differ by only about 1 minute.

The twin brother: one chart, two lives

This is the case most often raised against BaZi: twins born in the same two-hour window always share a chart, yet their lives can be worlds apart. Elvis and his brother are the most extreme example there is. One became the King of Rock and Roll; the other never had the chance to grow up.

Traditional practice has various workarounds for twins, such as “read the original chart for the firstborn and the opposite palace for the second”, but the schools disagree and none of these methods has been consistently tested, so this site does not use them. We would rather say it plainly: BaZi describes a structure, not an outcome. What that structure grows into depends on health, family, the times and opportunity, none of which sit in the four pillars. One more account is worth mentioning. Elvis was told about his brother by his mother from childhood, and all his life he felt he was living for two. That is his psychological experience, not a conclusion from the chart, and we note it only as background.

The Four Pillars and the Ten Gods

Our strength engine scores season, roots, visible stems, and the balance of Resource and companions against Wealth, Officer and Output; below 0.35 reads weak, above 0.55 reads strong.

A score of 0.269 puts him firmly in weak territory. The problem is not that Jia Wood lacks roots (there is a Friend Jia on the year stem, and Yin in the hour is its Prosperity branch); it is that the drain is too fierce. Two Fires on the stems pull the Wood’s strength outward, while the Wealth and Seven Killings in Chou, Xu and Shen wear it down further. So the favorable elements are Water (Resource) to feed the Day Master and Wood (companions) to back it up; the unfavorable ones are Fire (Output), Earth (Wealth) and Metal (Officer).

Put another way, the most dazzling thing about him, the talent of Hurting Officer and Eating God, is also the thing that costs him most. When our engine lists Fire as unfavorable it is not calling his talent a bad thing. It is saying that in this chart more energy goes out than comes in.

Three key features of the chart

1. Hurting Officer and Eating God both on show: Eating God is mild, natural and pleasure-loving; Hurting Officer is sharp, rebellious and determined to be different. When both appear the classics call it “mixed Output”, a structure with enormous drive to perform and create that also burns itself out easily. Blending white country music with Black rhythm and blues, and being attacked as indecent for swiveling his hips on television, both look very much like Hurting Officer.
2. The Yin–Shen clash: the day branch Shen (Seven Killings) is clashed by the hour branch Yin. Traditionally this points to inner pressure and outward action pulling against each other, and a life whose rhythm swings hard.
3. Missing Resource: Water is the element he needs most, yet the chart has only a little Gui Water hidden in Chou and Ren Water hidden in Shen. Among the Ten Gods, Resource also stands for the mother and for protection. He was extremely close to his mother, Gladys, and her death in 1958 hit him very hard. That is a parallel, not a prediction.

Luck pillars: one step every ten years

For a man born in a yang year (the year stem Jia is yang), the luck pillars run forward, starting at about age 10.

“fav / unfav” reads the stem first, then the branch: whether each one’s element is favorable (useful), unfavorable, or neither (neutral) for this chart.

The Ji-Mao luck pillar of 1954–1963 is the decade he exploded: the stem Ji Earth is Direct Wealth (unfavorable), while the branch Mao Wood is Rob Wealth (favorable), finally giving his Wood a root. It took him only two years to go from truck driver to the biggest singer in America. Money, fame and pressure all poured in at once, which fits the picture of “Direct Wealth on show, with companions holding him up”.

The next pillar, Geng-Chen, is unfavorable in both stem and branch: Geng Metal is Seven Killings attacking the Day Master, and Chen Earth is Wealth. In these ten years his manager steered him into a long run of commercial films. The pay was very high, but he said more than once that he was unhappy with it. The 1968 television special put him back on a live stage and is widely seen as the turning point of his later career.

Elvis died in 1977 at just 42. We do not use BaZi to discuss lifespan, health or cause of death, and that holds for every chart in this series.

Four key years

1956 is a Bing-Shen year: the stem Bing Fire is Eating God and the branch Shen Metal is Seven Killings. Eating God controlling Seven Killings is traditionally the pattern of talent subduing pressure and turning it into fame, and this was the year he went from local singer to national phenomenon. 1958 is Wu-Xu, Earth on both stem and branch, the Wealth element that is unfavorable for him; that year he was drafted and lost his mother, one of the heaviest years of his life. We set these parallels out and go no further.

Where does the chart miss his real life?

Zi Wei Dou Shu chart

The same birth time, cast in Zi Wei Dou Shu (San He school, the same engine as our Zi Wei chart tool, using the same true solar time as the BaZi chart above). BaZi weighs the five elements and what the chart favors; Zi Wei looks at which stars fall in which palace. The two systems ask different questions, so the Zi Wei chart is shown on its own first, followed by where it agrees and disagrees with the BaZi reading.

The gold frame is the Life Palace; the shaded palaces are its three-sides-and-four-directions (Wealth, Career, Travel). Solid badges are the birth-year transformations (Lu, Quan, Ke, Ji), red names are the six malefic stars, and the small word after a major star is its brightness.

Elvis’s Zi Wei chart has Tian Tong in the Life Palace (in the Hai palace, brilliant), joined by You Bi. Tian Tong is the star of contentment: gentle, feeling-led and fond of comfort, which is close to the offstage Elvis so often described as shy, polite and devoted to his mother. The Body Palace falls in the Career Palace, which holds Tian Ji and Ju Men along with Zuo Fu, Qing Yang and Huo Xing. Ju Men governs speech and voice, and Tian Ji with Ju Men is the classic pairing of someone who lives by their mouth and draws controversy for it; on a man who became famous through his singing voice and the uproar around it, that reads naturally. The Wealth Palace is empty and has to borrow the stars of the opposite palace, which can be set beside a life of enormous earnings whose finances were largely left to his manager; each reader can draw their own line between the two. His twin brother, born about 35 minutes earlier, has exactly the same Zi Wei chart, just as in BaZi.

Western astrology chart

The same moment of birth, cast as a Western natal chart (tropical zodiac, Placidus houses, the same engine as our natal chart tool). A natal chart uses the sky at the moment of birth, so it needs no true-solar-time correction, but it does need the latitude of the birthplace to fix the Ascendant and the houses. BaZi and Zi Wei are both derived from the Chinese calendar, while a natal chart computes planetary positions directly. Because the three systems start from different places, the chart is listed on its own below, followed by where it agrees with the BaZi and Zi Wei readings.

Capricorn Sun, Pisces Moon, Sagittarius rising. A Capricorn Sun speaks of the drive to climb out of hardship, and he was born in a two-room house in Tupelo, Mississippi. A Pisces Moon adds deep sensitivity, the kind that resonates with music and gospel hymns. The chart ruler, Jupiter, is in Scorpio in the 11th house (crowds, fans): Jupiter expands whatever it touches, and in the house of the crowd that is a very literal “magnified by the public”. With the 3:30 time Elvis himself gave, the Ascendant becomes Scorpio and the chart ruler switches to Mars, a completely different temperament. His twin brother, born about 35 minutes earlier, still has Sagittarius rising, so just as in BaZi the natal chart cannot tell the two brothers apart.

Planets move very little in a day, so the Sun and Mercury through Pluto are almost identical in both versions. What changes most is the Ascendant and the houses: the whole wheel turns by roughly one house every two hours.
