How to find the Three Marvels

We count only the forward order: for example a Yi year stem, a Bing month stem and a Ding day stem. Some schools also accept the reverse order, or the three stems scattered across the four pillars; views differ, so our lookup leaves those out.
How we counted: our engine cast one chart for every day from 1960 to 2005, with the birth hour drawn by a fixed-seed random sample, 16,802 charts in all, and checked each star by the formal method on this page.
What the classics say, and a closer modern reading
Traditional view: The classics say a chart with the Three Marvels has an extraordinary spirit, a broad mind and wide learning; meeting the Nobleman as well makes it nobler still, while falling in the Void means talent the world does not use.
Modern reading: The Three Marvels are a rare stem pattern, closer to a mark of something unusual: wide interests, lots of ideas, and a dislike of the usual path. It is a bonus, not the main theme of a chart.

Always read a star back through the Five Elements and the Ten Gods. On a favorable element, helper stars get better and even ominous stars can become assets; on an unfavorable one, helper stars lose value and an ominous star’s reminder deserves more attention. Two common misunderstandings
The Three Marvels guarantee wealth and status.
By our count only about 0.6% of charts have the forward Three Marvels, and a chart’s quality still rests on elemental strength and the Ten Gods. The Marvels are icing on the cake.
Having Yi, Bing and Ding among the stems is enough.
They must appear in order on three consecutive pillar stems. Scattered across the chart or in reverse order, we do not count them.

Symbolic stars are labels the ancients pinned onto a chart, some auspicious and some ominous, but what really decides a chart is the strength of the Five Elements and how the Ten Gods combine. A helper star on an unfavorable element loses value; an ominous star on a favorable element can become an asset. Whatever stars you find, treat them as a reminder or a small bonus. Everything on this site is for reference and entertainment only.
