Winston Churchill’s BaZi: Winter Metal Carrying a Chart Full of Wealth

On the day Winston Churchill was born, his father wrote to family and friends that the baby had been safely born “at 1.30 this morning”, and that letter is the most direct evidence of his birth time. The chart comes out as Jia-Xu, Yi-Hai, Xin-Mao, Ji-Chou (甲戌 乙亥 辛卯 己丑): Xin Metal born in early winter, with two Wealth stars, Jia and Yi, showing in the stems and Hai and Mao combining into Wood below. It is a textbook case of heavy Wealth on a weak Day Master. His luck pillars are just as interesting: during his two most comfortable luck pillars he first became Chancellor of the Exchequer and then spent a full decade out in the cold, while the Second World War, which made him a figure of history, fell in a luck pillar whose stem is unfavorable.

Birth data: his father’s letter that day

Britain had no summer time in 1874. Blenheim lies 1.4 degrees west of Greenwich, which takes about five minutes off the clock; at the end of November the equation of time pushes it forward by about eleven minutes. The two roughly cancel, giving 1:35, only a little more than half an hour into the Chou hour. To be safe we cast all twelve hours as well: the scores fall between 0.18 and 0.34, weak in every one. Even if the time is slightly off, the overall direction of this chart does not change.

Four Pillars and Ten Gods

Our strength engine scores season, roots, exposed stems, Resource and companions against Wealth, Officer and Output; below 0.35 reads weak, above 0.55 reads strong.

A score of 0.317: weak. Xin Metal finds only small roots in the hour branch Chou and the year branch Xu, yet it faces two exposed Wealth stems, a Wood combination made by Hai and Mao, and Hai Water draining it all the time. The favorable elements are Metal (companions) and Earth (Resource) to support the self, and Fire (Officer and Seven Killings) to warm the chart; the unfavorable ones are Water (Output) and Wood (Wealth).

On climate (tiao hou), an early-winter chart runs cold, and our engine flags it as “cold, short of Fire; needs Fire to warm the chart.” The only Fire in the chart is a little Ding Fire hidden in Xu.

Three points about the structure

1. Heavy Wealth, weak Day Master: lots of Wealth and a weak self is what tradition calls “heavy Wealth, weak body” (財多身弱): money and opportunity everywhere, but you cannot carry it, so money comes and goes and pressure never lets up. Churchill came from a ducal family, but his branch of it was not rich. He spent lavishly all his life, was in debt for years, kept himself afloat with a huge output of books, lectures and journalism, and lost a large sum in the 1929 crash. It is almost a textbook case of heavy Wealth on a weak Day Master.
2. The Yi–Xin clash: Indirect Wealth in the month stem clashes with the Day Master. The month pillar traditionally stands for parents and upbringing; his relationship with his father was distant, his father thought little of him, and his father died when he was 20. This is a parallel, not a verdict.
3. Indirect Resource in the hour: the hour stem Ji Earth, Indirect Resource, is his only support. Indirect Resource stands for unorthodox learning, original views and writing. He did badly at school, yet taught himself into one of the most influential English writers and speakers of the twentieth century and won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953.

Luck pillars: sidelined in the most comfortable decade, at the top in the hardest

For a man born in a yang year (the year stem Jia is yang), the luck pillars run forwards, starting at age 4.

“fav / unfav” reads the stem first, then the branch: whether each one’s element is favorable (useful), unfavorable, or neither (neutral) for this chart.

The two luck pillars Geng-Chen and Xin-Si (1917–1936) are favorable in both stem and branch: Geng and Xin Metal are companions that support the self, Chen Earth is Resource, and Si Fire is Officer as well as the climate fix. In the first decade he became Chancellor of the Exchequer, one of the high points of his political career; but the second decade was exactly his bleakest time, the “wilderness years”, pushed to the margins by his own party and left to write books, lay bricks and paint in the country.

Conversely, the Ren-Wu luck pillar that made him a figure of history has Ren Water, Hurting Officer, on its stem, which is unfavorable for him. The structure of this pillar is unusual: the branch Wu Fire is Seven Killings (favorable) while the stem Ren Water is Hurting Officer (unfavorable). The classics have a phrase for this, “Hurting Officer driving Seven Killings” (傷官駕殺): using your own eloquence, nerve and refusal to lose to master overwhelming pressure and enemies. Through the war he held up British morale speech by speech; “we shall never surrender” comes from this period. An unfavorable stem here means something closer to “this decade will cost enormously”, not “this decade will fail”.

It is the same lesson as King Charles III: favorable luck describes how comfortable the chart is, not how high the position. A person’s place in history is often where the times pushed him.

A few key years

1915 is a Yi-Mao year: stem and branch are both Wealth Wood (unfavorable), and Yi Wood clashes directly with the Day Master Xin Metal. That year he fell from First Lord of the Admiralty to rock bottom. 1940 is a Geng-Chen year: the stem Geng Metal is Rob Wealth and the branch Chen Earth is Direct Resource, all favorable, and that is the year he became prime minister.

But some years do not fit: 1924, a Jia-Zi year, is also unfavorable in both stem and branch, yet that year he became Chancellor of the Exchequer, the office second only to prime minister. We list it because picking only the years that fit is not reading a chart; it is telling a story.

Where does the chart miss his real life?

Zi Wei Dou Shu chart

The same birth time, cast in Zi Wei Dou Shu (San He school, the same engine as our Zi Wei chart tool, using the same true solar time as the BaZi chart above). BaZi weighs the five elements and what the chart favors; Zi Wei looks at which stars fall in which palace. The two systems ask different questions, so the Zi Wei chart is shown on its own first, followed by where it agrees and disagrees with the BaZi reading.

The gold frame is the Life Palace; the shaded palaces are its three-sides-and-four-directions (Wealth, Career, Travel). Solid badges are the birth-year transformations (Lu, Quan, Ke, Ji), red names are the six malefic stars, and the small word after a major star is its brightness.

Churchill’s Zi Wei chart has Tai Yin in the Life Palace (in Xu, bright), Tian Ji in the Wealth Palace and Tian Tong and Tian Liang in the Career Palace, so the Life, Wealth and Career palaces together form the pattern known as “Ji Yue Tong Liang” (機月同梁: Tian Ji, Tai Yin, Tian Tong, Tian Liang). As the Elon Musk page noted, the old texts treat this pattern as suited to public office and working inside institutions. It does not fit Musk at all, but it fits Churchill very well: elected to Parliament at 26, he spent more than sixty years in the Commons and the Cabinet and held almost every major office of state. The Career Palace also holds Lu Cun, a classic sign of “drawing a salary inside the system”. In the Travel Palace, Tai Yang takes Ji. Tai Yang is the public and one’s reputation, and Ji in the Travel Palace can be read as “a public reputation that swings wildly”: from being hounded out of office after Gallipoli to becoming the symbol of the nation in the Second World War, the swing could hardly be bigger. The same pattern fits one man and misses another, which is a good reminder that a pattern is only a tendency.

Western astrology chart

The same moment of birth, cast as a Western natal chart (tropical zodiac, Placidus houses, the same engine as our natal chart tool). A natal chart uses the sky at the moment of birth, so it needs no true-solar-time correction, but it does need the latitude of the birthplace to fix the Ascendant and the houses. BaZi and Zi Wei are both derived from the Chinese calendar, while a natal chart computes planetary positions directly. Because the three systems start from different places, the chart is listed on its own below, followed by where it agrees with the BaZi and Zi Wei readings.

The Sagittarius Sun sits in the 3rd house (communication and writing). He won the Nobel Prize in Literature and held up a whole nation’s morale with his speeches in the Second World War, so an emphasis on the third house suits his gift with words. The Moon in Leo is in the 11th house (groups and the crowd): emotions that need dignity and a stage, bound up with the public. Five of the ten planets are in fire signs, a very outgoing, combative chart. The Ascendant is at Virgo 29°; a birth just 1 minutes later would have given Libra rising. The time here comes from a letter his father wrote that same day, so it is fairly reliable. Where it does not fit: BaZi reads him as weak Xin Metal overloaded with Wealth, only becoming prime minister at 65, while the natal chart shows nothing of that “late”.
