King Charles III’s BaZi: A Great Body of Winter Water, and an Heir Who Waited Seventy Years

King Charles III’s birth time was announced by the palace the same evening, which makes it as solid as a birth certificate. The chart comes out as Wu-Zi, Gui-Hai, Gui-Mao, Gui-Hai: the month, day and hour stems are all Gui Water, born in the early-winter Hai month, so the chart is full of Water. Our engine reads it as strong, with Fire as the thing it lacks most. His luck pillars are even more intriguing: from age 18 he walked five consecutive luck pillars that are favorable in both stem and branch, fifty full years, and for all fifty of them his title was “heir to the throne”. This page starts from the chart and uses his case to look at a common misunderstanding: what does good luck actually mean?

Birth data: announced by the palace the same evening

British Summer Time in 1948 ended at the end of October, so November was on standard time and there is no hour to take off. London sits almost exactly on the Greenwich meridian, so the main difference comes from the equation of time in mid-November: the true Sun runs about fifteen minutes ahead of the clock, which gives 21:28, comfortably inside the Hai hour.

The Four Pillars and the Ten Gods

Our strength engine scores being in season, roots, exposed stems, Resource and companions against Wealth, Officer and Output: below 0.35 reads weak, above 0.55 reads strong.

The score is 0.594, just over the strong threshold. With this much Water, why only “just over”? Because the day branch Mao Wood forms a half Wood combination with the two Hai branches, and Wood, as Output, drains off a large share of the Water’s strength. The favorable elements are Wood (Output) to drain, Earth (Officer and Seven Killings) to dam and Fire (Wealth) to warm; the unfavorable ones are more Metal (Resource) and Water (companions).

On climate (tiao hou), an early-winter chart runs cold, and our engine flags it as “cold, short of Fire; needs Fire to warm the chart.” There is not a single Fire character in the chart; only the Wu–Gui combination nominally transforms into Fire. A great body of winter Water needs the Sun more than anything.

Three key features of the chart

1. One Officer fought over by three Gui: the year stem Wu Earth is Direct Officer, standing for title, position and rules. Three Gui Waters combine with it at once, which the classics read as “many people contesting the same seat”, or “one’s own mind forever tied to this title”. For someone who has been first in line to the throne since the age of three, the image is hard to overlook.
2. A crowd of companions: the Gui Water stems on the month and hour are Friends, and the Ren Water hidden in the two Hai branches is Rob Wealth. Companions stand for peers, siblings and competitors, and also for a strong urge to assert oneself.
3. Hai and Mao combining into Wood, with Output as the outlet: the day branch Mao Wood is Eating God and forms a half Wood combination with the two Hai. Eating God stands for interests, ideals and expression. His long engagement with architecture, organic farming and the environment, and his habit of stating his views in public, all look like Water flowing out toward Wood.

Luck pillars: fifty years of good luck, and a throne that did not come

For a man born in a yang year (the year stem Wu is yang), the luck pillars run forwards, starting at age 9.

“fav / unfav” reads the stem first, then the branch: whether each one’s element is favorable (useful), unfavorable, or neither (neutral) for this chart.

From 1966 to 2015, five consecutive luck pillars are favorable in both stem and branch: Yi-Chou, Bing-Yin, Ding-Mao, Wu-Chen, Ji-Si. Wood, Fire and Earth take turns coming in to warm the chart, drain the Water and dam it, and every step brings something this chart wants. In this series it is the longest unbroken run of good luck.

Yet for all fifty years he was the heir. This is the most common misunderstanding about luck pillars: a favorable luck pillar means “the chart is comfortable and things go smoothly”, not “you get the highest seat”. In this period he founded a charity with lasting influence, championed the environment and architecture, and had two sons, all of which count as things going “smoothly”; but when the throne would come depended on how long his mother reigned, and that is not in his own chart.

Looked at the other way, in 2022, when he actually became king, he was in the Geng-Wu luck pillar: the stem Geng Metal (Direct Resource) is unfavorable and the branch Wu Fire is favorable, the first pillar in more than fifty years that is not favorable throughout. The greatest title of all arrived in a less comfortable luck pillar. Elon Musk becoming the world’s richest person in a luck pillar where Wealth is unfavorable is a similar case.

Some key years

Traditionally, in a man’s chart the Wealth star is the wife star, and for a Gui Water Day Master Wealth is Fire. When he married in 1981 he was in the Bing-Yin luck pillar, with Direct Wealth showing on its stem, which fits the old rule that “a man marries in the years when the Wealth star shows on a stem”. In 1981 (Xin-You) and 2005 (Yi-You) the year branch is You Metal both times, an unfavorable element for him. We only point out these parallels; we do not comment on anyone’s marriage from a chart.

In 2022, a Ren-Yin year, the stem Ren Water (Rob Wealth) is unfavorable and the branch Yin Wood (Hurting Officer) is favorable. That year he lost his mother and gained the throne; a year pillar half unfavorable, half favorable happens to match a year of one grief and one gain. This is a parallel; we list it and do not take it further.

Where does the chart miss his real life?

Zi Wei Dou Shu chart

The same birth time, cast in Zi Wei Dou Shu (San He school, the same engine as our Zi Wei chart tool, using the same true solar time as the BaZi chart above). BaZi weighs the five elements and what the chart favors; Zi Wei looks at which stars fall in which palace. The two systems ask different questions, so the Zi Wei chart is shown on its own first, followed by where it agrees and disagrees with the BaZi reading.

The gold frame is the Life Palace; the shaded palaces are its three-sides-and-four-directions (Wealth, Career, Travel). Solid badges are the birth-year transformations (Lu, Quan, Ke, Ji), red names are the six malefic stars, and the small word after a major star is its brightness.

Charles III’s Life Palace holds Ju Men in the Zi palace (bright). Zi Wei Dou Shu calls Ju Men in the Life Palace at Zi or Wu “jade hidden in stone” (shi zhong yin yu): the jade is locked inside rock and is only seen after long polishing, and the classics say this pattern does best when it matures late and keeps its guard rather than showing itself. He was heir to the throne for more than seventy years and became king only at 73, the oldest monarch ever to accede to the British throne, which matches “jade hidden in stone” almost word for word. The Career Palace holds Tai Yang (bright): Tai Yang stands for public life, duty and giving, and is traditionally a star of rank. The Body Palace falls in the Spouse Palace, which holds Tai Yin (bright) with the Quan transformation. All of these are hindsight readings: we already know how long he waited, so of course “jade hidden in stone” feels accurate.

Western astrology chart

The same moment of birth, cast as a Western natal chart (tropical zodiac, Placidus houses, the same engine as our natal chart tool). A natal chart uses the sky at the moment of birth, so it needs no true-solar-time correction, but it does need the latitude of the birthplace to fix the Ascendant and the houses. BaZi and Zi Wei are both derived from the Chinese calendar, while a natal chart computes planetary positions directly. Because the three systems start from different places, the chart is listed on its own below, followed by where it agrees with the BaZi and Zi Wei readings.

Leo rising, and the chart ruler is the Sun itself: a Leo Ascendant is born with a regal bearing, and this is a chart heavy with status. But the Sun falls in the 4th house (home and roots), in Scorpio, not in the 10th house of public life. The traditional reading is a life whose center of gravity turns around family, heritage and the private sphere, and he has indeed lived his whole life inside the frame of the royal family. The Moon is in Taurus in the 10th house (career and public image): emotions that need stability and land. His long commitment to organic farming, architecture and the environment is exactly the territory of a Taurus Moon. BaZi reads him as a great body of Water in early winter whose greatest need is Fire, and in the natal chart his chart ruler happens to be the Sun. It is an interesting coincidence.
