Tian Xing in Zi Wei Dou Shu: Discipline, Principle and High Standards

Tian Xing is the discipline star of Zi Wei Dou Shu. Its palace is set by the lunar birth month and it stands for rules, principle and high standards for oneself: whatever palace it sits in is more serious and rule-bound, and tends to call for firm decisions.

What Tian Xing is

The classics mostly describe Tian Xing in negative terms. Modern readers tend to see it as a blade: used well it is a professional tool, used badly it becomes harshness towards yourself and others. People with a strong Tian Xing often have a sense of justice and a clear view of right and wrong, and suit rule-based professions such as law, medicine and nursing, the military and police, or auditing.

Tian Xing and Tian Yao belong to the lesser stars: they are printed smaller on a chart, after the major and minor stars. One is about discipline and one about charm, and they are the pair of lesser stars people ask about most.

How Tian Xing is placed

Tian Xing is placed by the lunar birth month: start the first month at You and count forward to your birth month; wherever you stop, that is Tian Xing’s palace. Tian Xing starts at You and Tian Yao at Chou, so Tian Yao is always the fifth palace counting forward from Tian Xing. Leap months follow this site’s engine (the first half counts as that month, the second half as the next).

Tian Xing and Tian Yao

Tian Yao is always the fifth palace counting forward from Tian Xing, a three-harmony relationship (every one of our 16,802 charts): whenever one of them is in the Life Palace, the other is somewhere in the Life Palace’s group of four. One is about discipline, the other about charm, one holding back and one letting go, which is why they are read together. About 24.8% of people have both in the Life Palace’s group.
