Tian Ji + Ju Men is one of the sixty Life Palace star groups in Zi Wei Dou Shu and appears in the Mao and You branches. First we look at how these stars behave in Zi Wei, then where they land on the four MBTI axes, and finally we set the two systems side by side.
Tian Ji + Ju Men in Zi Wei
Tian Ji (the Strategist) is good at planning and Ju Men (the Great Gate) good at arguing, and in Mao and You both stars are exalted or strong: Tian Ji strong, Ju Men exalted, with the same brightness in both palaces. These people think deeply, speak well and have a very strong research drive; faced with a problem they chase it to the end, and they are good at explaining complicated things clearly. The old texts rate Tian Ji + Ju Men in Mao especially highly, saying “Ju Men and Tian Ji in one palace, a seat among the high ministers”; in You they more often warn to check the transformations and malefic stars. The difference between the two palaces lies not in brightness but in how the old texts rate them and the conditions that go with them.
The opposite palace has no major star, so the Travel Palace borrows Tian Ji + Ju Men from the Life Palace; the Career Palace also lacks a major star and borrows from its opposite palace to judge career. The Wealth Palace holds only Tian Tong: a let-it-be attitude to money, earning through expertise, unwilling to do things they don't believe in for money. Ju Men is the dark star, so these people tend toward suspicion and can attract disputes by speaking too fast and too accurately; Tian Ji governs change, so early on they often switch jobs or research directions. Once they find an expertise they can dig deep into, they often become the most authoritative voice in that field.

Introversion is -1.75, leaning I. Tian Ji and Ju Men are both reserved, and Tian Tong in the Wealth Palace doesn't seek the spotlight; the opposite palace and Career Palace have no major stars, so nothing pulls outward. Still, Ju Men is expressive, and on their specialty they can be very talkative.

Reading Tian Ji + Ju Men in INTP terms
Read from the INTP angle, Tian Ji + Ju Men is Introverted Thinking (Ti) in its most typical form: a theory must hold together, every link must survive questioning, and once a hole is found they won't let it go. Extraverted Intuition (Ne) has them jumping from one question to the next, the scope of research ever widening. Tian Ji does the thinking and Ju Men the questioning and speaking, covering the INTP's first two functions neatly.
But Tian Ji + Ju Men talks better than the average INTP. Ju Men's eloquence makes them powerful in debate, teaching and writing, one reason the old texts praise this pairing in Mao. On the other hand, the INTP's fourth function, Extraverted Feeling (Fe), is weaker; when they are in full flow, they often lose track of the other person's feelings, which is where most of Ju Men's disputes come from.

- Ju Men is suspicious, and the INTP doesn't readily accept authoritative claims either. Faced with “the experts say” or “management says,” their first reaction is to ask what it's based on.
- Deep focus on the right problem
- Tian Ji is changeable, but once Tian Ji + Ju Men finds a direction it focuses hard; an INTP who meets a truly interesting problem can also think of nothing else for days. With the right problem, their output can be remarkable.
Where Zi Wei and MBTI differ
- Mao and You rated differently
- Both palaces have the same brightness, yet the old texts especially praise Tian Ji + Ju Men in Mao, while in You they focus more on transformations and malefic stars. MBTI gives both the same INTP; Zi Wei treats the branch itself as part of the assessment.
- Good speakers who attract disputes
- MBTI says the INTP is socially awkward; Zi Wei is more specific: Tian Ji + Ju Men actually speaks very well, and the trouble is speaking too accurately and too quickly, which offends people. The two systems describe the same trait in different directions.

Are people with Tian Ji + Ju Men in the Life Palace all good speakers?
Most express themselves well, especially on their own specialty. Ju Men governs eloquence and Tian Ji governs lines of thought; together they can explain complex reasoning in an orderly way. Day to day, though, they are rather quiet, and with people they don't know they may say very little; how much they talk depends on the setting.
Is Tian Ji + Ju Men better in Mao or in You?
The old texts rate Mao more highly, with the line “Ju Men and Tian Ji in one palace, a seat among the high ministers”; for You they more often advise checking for Hua Lu, Hua Quan and malefic stars.
