What INFP is like
INFP stands for Introversion (I), Intuition (N), Feeling (F) and Perceiving (P). This type's dominant function is Introverted Feeling (Fi): a very clear inner measure of value, a sharp sense of what's right and what goes against who they are, though they don't always say it. In order the stack runs Fi→Ne→Si→Te. Auxiliary Extraverted Intuition (Ne) gives them a rich imagination that can spin a whole story out of a song or a single line. Tertiary Introverted Sensing (Si) makes them treasure old things and memories. The weakest, Extraverted Thinking (Te), makes them prone to getting stuck on terms, numbers and efficiency; under heavy stress they may suddenly turn very critical and rush to get everything done in one go.
In daily life it might look like this: Mei finds an out-of-print poetry collection at a secondhand bookstall and is happy all weekend. On Monday her manager asks her to write some "really punchy" sales copy. She writes three versions and feels none of them sounds like something she'd say. The one she finally hands in is the version she can just about convince herself "at least isn't lying".
Common strengths
- Sincere and consistent Introverted Feeling makes it hard for INFPs to say things they don't mean. Their kindness isn't for show, and once they decide something is worthwhile, they'll quietly stick with it for a long time.
- Empathy for the overlooked INFPs readily side with people who get ignored and can sense grievances others can't put into words. In education, helping professions and creative work, that sensitivity is a great asset.
- Imagination and expression Extraverted Intuition plus a rich inner world often gives INFPs a distinctive voice in writing, art or music. Their work tends to carry a very personal warmth.
Common blind spots
- Leaving it to the last minute Faced with work they have no passion for, INFPs tend to put it off again and again. Extraverted Thinking is weaker, so planning progress and setting priorities is where they need outside help.
- Hearing criticism as rejection Their values are tightly bound to their sense of self, so when someone criticises their work, an INFP may feel rejected as a whole person, and become upset or withdraw.
- Not good at negotiating Negotiating salary, arguing for resources, haggling: all of this is uncomfortable for INFPs. They'd rather lose out a little than let a relationship feel like a transaction.
The Zi Wei star groups closest to INFP
INFP corresponds to five combinations: Tian Ji + Tai Yin, Tian Tong + Tai Yin, Tian Tong + Tian Liang, Tian Tong opposite Ju Men, and Tian Tong opposite Tian Liang. The last four have Tian Tong (the Contented One) in the Life Palace, and Tian Ji + Tai Yin has Tian Tong in its Wealth Palace, so all five include Tian Tong. Tian Tong's weightings are Introversion -1, Feeling -2 and Perceiving -2, making it almost an I, F and P on its own; Tian Tong + Tai Yin reaches -3.25, 0.75, -3.62 and -1.37 on the four axes. N is faint, though: apart from Tian Ji + Tai Yin at 3, the others score only 0.75 or 0.38, and intuition relies mostly on Tai Yin, Tian Liang and Ju Men in the triangle.
Among this site's 16,802 sample charts (one per day from 1960 to 2005, with palaces and patterns layered on), INFP makes up 12.4%, the third most common of the sixteen types. This is the distribution of the classical descriptions, not a real population. It's high because Tian Tong, Tai Yin and Tian Ji all lean Introverted, Tian Tong is one of the most P-leaning major stars, and they often meet in each other's triangle and opposite palaces.

How we counted: our engine cast one Zi Wei chart for every day from 1960 to 2005, with the birth hour drawn by a fixed-seed random sample and sexes alternating, 16,802 charts in all; each chart includes the palace and pattern layers. This is how the classical descriptions spread across the four axes, not the MBTI distribution of real people.
Similarities and differences
Where INFP and Zi Wei agree
- Gentle and non-combative
- The old texts call Tian Tong the star of blessings: easygoing and averse to conflict. INFPs also tend to avoid head-on clashes and would rather work things through on their own. Both describe someone who puts the people around them at ease.
- Richer inside than out
- Tai Yin is delicate and attentive to feeling, and Tian Tong knows how to savour life. An INFP's Introverted Feeling likewise holds a deep inner world, of which outsiders usually see only a small part.
- Needing to keep some flexibility
- Tian Tong's P weighting is -2, and it dislikes being tied to schedules; INFPs likewise prefer to keep options open. Both warn that overly tight rules drain motivation from people like this.
Where the two systems differ
- Worlds apart in Zi and Wu
- Tian Tong + Tai Yin in Zi has Tian Tong strong and Tai Yin exalted, with plenty of good fortune and sensitivity; in Wu, Tian Tong is fallen and Tai Yin lacks strength, with more sensitivity and a tendency to bottle up emotions. Both are INFP, but Zi Wei separates two very different states.
- Zi Wei adds 'enjoying one's blessings'
- MBTI's INFP descriptions emphasise ideals and meaning; the old texts' descriptions of Tian Tong particularly stress enjoyment and knowing how to live, while warning that too smooth a road breeds laziness and a little pressure is needed to draw out ability. That's an extra, everyday side Zi Wei brings.
- N is faint in Zi Wei
- MBTI's INFP is known for imagination, but four of Zi Wei's five combinations score only 0.75 or 0.38 on Intuition, not far from S. Many people with Tian Tong in the Life Palace who get described as INFP are actually closer to a sensory, down-to-earth side.
- The ups and downs of periods
- When people with Tian Tong in the Life Palace enter a decade period of moving stars like Qi Sha or Po Jun, circumstances may force them to become more active; MBTI assumes type is broadly unchanging and doesn't describe this kind of shift driven by circumstance.

Tian Tong supplies Introversion, Feeling and an easygoing nature; Tai Yin supplies sensitivity. This is a comparison placing classical personality descriptions on MBTI's four axes, not a test.
Is everyone with Tian Tong in the Life Palace an INFP?
No. This site classes Tian Tong opposite Tai Yin as ISFP and Tian Tong + Ju Men as INTP; the difference lies in the stars in the same palace, opposite palace and triangle. An individual chart also adds the Mind Palace, Body Palace and four transformations; for instance, someone with Tian Tong Hua Quan has clear opinions and may be closer to J.
