ENTP combines Extraversion, Intuition, Thinking, Perceiving. This page first describes the type in plain terms, then looks at which Zi Wei Life Palace star groups are described most like it, and finally sets the two systems side by side.
What ENTP is like
ENTP combines Extraversion (E), Intuition (N), Thinking (T) and Perceiving (P): energy comes from dealing with people, the eye is always looking for new possibilities, judgement runs on logic, and in daily life they would rather keep options open than close off a path too early. The function stack is Ne→Ti→Fe→Si. Dominant Extraverted Intuition (Ne) is an association machine; one topic can branch into five or six directions. Auxiliary Introverted Thinking (Ti) takes those ideas apart in their head to see which ones hold up. Tertiary Extraverted Feeling (Fe) lets them read the room, so however heated the argument, they rarely leave someone with no way to save face. Last comes Introverted Sensing (Si), which governs routine, repetition and past experience, the part they have least patience for.
A typical scene: at a book club, people are sharing thoughts on a book about night-market economics. Mei is already asking, "What if stall rent were changed to a revenue share? How would the whole street's ecosystem change?" Then she argues against herself and throws out a third possibility. The discussion livens up. When it's her turn to write up the meeting notes next time, though, she will most likely find a way to trade the job away.
Common strengths
- Lots of ideas, quick to pivot Extraverted Intuition means an ENTP rarely sees only one road. When the original plan fails, they usually have two or three alternatives ready and are willing to try them on the spot.
- Willing to question what everyone takes for granted "We've always done it this way" doesn't persuade them. They habitually ask why, and often turn up gaps in a process no one had noticed, or rules that outlived their purpose long ago.
- Connecting across fields They can link bodies of knowledge that seem unrelated, such as applying game-design ideas to staff training. That ability to connect is especially valued where innovation is needed.
Common blind spots
- Hot start, cool finish Once the thrill of a new idea fades, what remains is detail and repetitive execution, exactly where their weakest function, Introverted Sensing, sits. Wanting to move on to the next thing when a project is seventy percent done is a common pattern.
- Winning the argument, losing the person Introverted Thinking makes them enjoy finding the weak point in an argument, but the other person may not experience it as brainstorming. Sometimes the conversation is brilliant, yet what the other person remembers is the sting of being contradicted.
- Undervaluing slow accumulation Saving money, maintenance, regular reporting: things that must be done daily and show no visible change tend to get put off again and again, until a problem surfaces and they fix it all in one go.
The Zi Wei star groups closest to ENTP
On this site ENTP corresponds to six star systems: Zi Wei + Tan Lang, Lian Zhen + Po Jun, Tan Lang opposite Zi Wei, Po Jun opposite Lian Zhen + Tian Xiang, Po Jun opposite Zi Wei + Tian Xiang, and Ju Men opposite Tai Yang. The first five all have Tan Lang or Po Jun in the Life Palace. These two stars of change within the Sha-Po-Lang group each pull -2 on the J/P axis, and they are the main source of the ENTP reluctance to close off options. Tan Lang (the Wolf of Desire) has wide interests and loves novelty; Po Jun (the Vanguard) wants to open new ground. Paired with Zi Wei or Lian Zhen, the Extraversion score rises above 2.5, and Zi Wei + Tan Lang reaches 3.5.
Ju Men opposite Tai Yang is the exception. Its E/I axis is exactly 0, a tie at the star-system level; this site defaults it to E, and in an individual chart the Mind Palace and Body Palace decide. It leans ENTP because of Ju Men's analytical edge (Intuition 1.75, Thinking 1.25). In Hai, the opposite Tai Yang is strong; in Si, Tai Yang is fallen, so the degree of outgoingness differs considerably. ENTP makes up 6.5% of the sample charts, mid-range among the extraverted types: the Sha-Po-Lang stars are plentiful, so E and P are not hard to assemble, but leaning N and T at the same time needs Zi Wei, Lian Zhen or Ju Men to fill in. The figure comes from 16,802 charts, one per day from 1960 to 2005, with palaces and patterns layered on. It is the distribution of the classical descriptions across the four axes, not the share in an actual population.

How we counted: our engine cast one Zi Wei chart for every day from 1960 to 2005, with the birth hour drawn by a fixed-seed random sample and sexes alternating, 16,802 charts in all; each chart includes the palace and pattern layers. This is how the classical descriptions spread across the four axes, not the MBTI distribution of real people.
Similarities and differences
Where ENTP and Zi Wei agree
- Tan Lang's range and Extraverted Intuition
- The old texts describe Tan Lang as multi-talented, wanting to try everything, and widely connected. That is very close to an ENTP's Extraverted Intuition: strong curiosity about new things, a love of trading ideas in a crowd, and several lines of interest running at once.
- Po Jun's drive for novelty and change
- In the classics Po Jun is a 'consuming' star associated with change and new beginnings; when it sees an old setup it wants to start over. The ENTP's impatience with 'same as before' and urge to try new methods are the same temperament described in two languages.
- Ju Men's debate and Introverted Thinking
- Ju Men governs speech and argument and is good at arguing things through. ENTPs test arguments with Introverted Thinking and test ideas through verbal back-and-forth. On this point, people with Ju Men opposite Tai Yang look most like the textbook ENTP.
Where the two systems differ
- Zi Wei can tell three kinds of ENTP apart
- Among ENTPs, the Tan Lang group leans toward talent and socialising, the Po Jun group toward pioneering and breaking the mould, and the Ju Men group toward debate and analysis. MBTI gives one code; Zi Wei shows where their 'new ideas' mainly come from.
- Fallen stars change the outcome
- Lian Zhen + Po Jun in Mao or You has Lian Zhen neutral, Po Jun fallen and the opposite Tian Xiang also fallen, so the old texts mostly attach warnings to it. Po Jun opposite Lian Zhen + Tian Xiang, in Zi or Wu, has Po Jun exalted. Both are ENTP, but the first sees a lot of change that doesn't necessarily pay off, while the second is better at turning change into results.
- Someone across the way holding the reins
- Both Po Jun opposite Zi Wei + Tian Xiang and Po Jun opposite Lian Zhen + Tian Xiang have Tian Xiang in the opposite palace. Tian Xiang (the Minister) values a sense of proportion and leans J, adding a little discipline to the ENTP's improvisation. In MBTI, P is simply a preference; there is no reading of 'a force across from you pulling you back'.
- Extraverted Feeling has no separate slot in Zi Wei
- MBTI specifically mentions the ENTP's tertiary Extraverted Feeling. Zi Wei doesn't layer things that way. Social skill depends on whether the Life Palace holds sociable stars such as Lian Zhen or Tan Lang, or is read separately from the Friends Palace.

The ENTP quality of a Tan Lang Life Palace comes mainly from curiosity and sociability. In this site's scoring, Tan Lang itself even leans slightly toward Feeling on the T/F axis (-0.5); the Thinking side is mostly held up by Zi Wei in the opposite palace, Po Jun in the Wealth Palace and Qi Sha in the Career Palace. So your T is more about how you make decisions at work, and may not show up as a love of debate.
