Which star takes Quan in your birth year
The birth-year Four Transformations are set by the heavenly stem of your birth year: people born in a Jia year get Hua Quan on one star, people born in a Yi year on another. The table lists the star for each of the ten stems. If that star sits in your Travel Palace, this page describes your chart. Tap a star name to read about it in the Travel Palace.
| Year stem | Star that takes Quan | The flavor of Quan it brings |
|---|---|---|
| Jia years (ending in 4) | Po Jun | The nerve to reform and break new ground. |
| Yi years (ending in 5) | Tian Liang | An elder’s authority: caring, but also in charge. |
| Bing years (ending in 6) | Tian Ji | Command over planning and decisions. |
| Ding years (ending in 7) | Tian Tong | Gentle on the surface, firm underneath. |
| Wu years (ending in 8) | Tai Yin | Quiet control, focused on home and money. |

Zi Wei Dou Shu changes year on Lunar New Year’s Day, so if you were born in January or February, check your lunar year first. The year stem follows the last digit of the Western year (1984 and 1994, for example, are Jia years).
What we measured
How we counted: our engine cast one Zi Wei chart for every day from 1960 to 2005, with the birth hour drawn by a fixed-seed random sample, 16,802 charts in all. This shows how chart structures are distributed; it says nothing about anyone’s fortunes.
In our sample, about 8.4% of people have the birth-year Hua Quan in the Travel Palace; the most common stars are Zi Wei (11.8%), Ju Men (11.4%), Tai Yang (11.3%). Hua Quan spreads fairly evenly over the palaces, and no palace is especially rare. The real differences lie in which star takes Quan, how bright that star is, and what other stars share the palace or sit opposite it.
