Your Baby's Missing Element: Check Whether It Is Favorable First
"Your baby is missing Water, so the name needs Water in it." Plenty of parents have heard something like this. The trouble is that a missing element is about quantity, while the favorable element is about what the whole chart needs, and the two are often not the same. Adding in the wrong direction only strengthens a force that is already too strong.
Missing and needed are not the same thing

How we counted: our engine cast one chart for every day from 1960 to 2005, with the birth hour drawn by a fixed-seed random sample and male and female charts alternating, 16,802 charts in all. Missing elements are counted from eight characters (the four stems plus each branch's main hidden stem); favorable and unfavorable elements come from our strength engine.
About six in ten missing elements happen to be favorable, and adding them helps. But nearly three in ten are unfavorable, and roughly one in ten is neither. In other words, following "add whatever is missing" gets it wrong about one time in three. In our test charts, about 16.7% of charts are missing only elements that are unfavorable.
Missing Water, but Water is unfavorable
Born February 18, 2021, Shen hour (3–5 p.m.), boy
- Five elements: Wood 1, Fire 1, Earth 2, Metal 4, Water 0. Not one of the eight characters is Water.
- Strength: the Ding Fire Day Master is born in Yin month, but the year, month and hour stems are Xin, Geng and Wu, and the You and Shen branches are both Metal. Wealth and Output drain Ding Fire until it is quite weak.
- Favorable elements: a weak Ding Fire wants Fire, Wood for support, and Earth, Metal, Water are unfavorable. Water is the Officer to Ding Fire (Water controls Fire), one of the unfavorable elements.
- Conclusion: this chart is "missing Water," but Water should not be added. Following "add whatever is missing" by choosing a Water name, dressing in black or putting in a fish tank would only strengthen the force already pressing on the Day Master. What to add is the favorable Wood and Fire.

Eight characters spread over five elements will easily leave one or two out. Missing one element is the most common case of all, and it does not mean anything is wrong with the chart.
If it should be added, how
- Confirm it is favorable first: use the tool on this page or the favorable elements checker. Only add a missing element if it is on the favorable list.
- Small things in daily life: colors, directions, what is around the home and the kinds of activities are gentle ways to add that can be adjusted any time; the matches are on the missing elements pages.
- A name lasts a lifetime: naming involves meaning, sound and family custom, and the five elements are just one reference among them. There is no need to give up a good name for the sake of adding an element.

A straight word: BaZi is a mirror for understanding your child, not a script written for them
A child's character is shaped all the way along by family, school and friends. BaZi can only describe the directions they tend to grow in by nature. Used to understand why a child is the way they are, it can be a real help; used to predict what they will become, or to choose their path for them, it is being used in the wrong place. Should I add whatever element my baby's BaZi is missing?
Not necessarily. Add a missing element only if it happens to be favorable. In our test charts, 29.2% of missing elements are unfavorable, and adding them backfires.
Is it normal for a BaZi chart to be missing an element?
Very normal. Eight characters are shared among five elements; in our test charts about 69.5% of charts miss at least one, and missing exactly one is the most common case (52.5%).
Does a baby's name have to add the missing element?
No. A name involves meaning, sound and family custom, and the five elements are only one reference. Consider it once you know the element is favorable, and do not give up a good name just to add an element.
