Childhood Before the Luck Pillars: The Month Pillar and Minor Luck
When a child is born, the luck pillars have not started yet. They only take over in the start year: some children begin at one or two, others not until ten. For the childhood before that, the old texts used a separate "minor luck," read one year at a time. This stretch is also called the childhood limit (童限, tong xian).
Where the start age comes from
The start age is worked out from the distance between the birth date and the previous or next "jie" solar term: three days count as one year and one day as four months. A boy born in a yang year or a girl born in a yin year counts forward to the next term; a boy born in a yin year or a girl born in a yang year counts back to the previous one. So the closer the birthday is to a solar term, the earlier the luck pillars begin. See when luck pillars start.
How we counted: our engine cast one chart for every day from 1960 to 2005, with the birth hour drawn by a fixed-seed random sample and male and female charts alternating, 16,802 charts in all. Missing elements are counted from eight characters (the four stems plus each branch's main hidden stem); favorable and unfavorable elements come from our strength engine.

Minor luck is counted from the hour pillar, so it needs the birth hour; without it, childhood can only be read from the month pillar. Minor luck runs in the same direction as the luck pillars; it simply starts from the hour pillar instead.
A curious, expressive Gui Water boy
Born May 10, 2022, Chen hour (7–9 a.m.), boy
- Day Master: Gui Water, quiet and imaginative, a close observer.
- Main Ten God group: the Yin Wood year branch and the Yi Wood month stem are both Wood, which for Gui Water is Output (Water produces Wood), the heaviest of the five groups. That makes him "the curious, expressive child." Full of ideas and always asking why. Give chances to say things and make things; explaining a rule works better than issuing an order.
- Five elements: Wood 2, Fire 2, Earth 1, Metal 0, Water 3; missing Metal. This Gui Water is weak, and Metal, which produces Water, is exactly a favorable element, so adding a little of it makes sense.
- Childhood: his luck pillars only begin at age 10. Before that, minor luck starts in 2022 with Ding-Si and changes every year. The first luck pillar, Bing-Wu (Direct Wealth), begins in 2031 and its ten years run from about fourth grade to the end of high school.
How to read this stretch
- The month pillar is the backdrop: before the luck pillars begin, tradition treats the month pillar as the setting of childhood. Its Ten God and favorability roughly describe the atmosphere a child grows up in.
- Minor luck sets the rhythm of each year: it changes yearly and can be read with the annual pillar as a reference for how that year goes for the child.
- Parents matter most: at this age a child moves almost entirely with the family. Routine, time together and surroundings shape them far more than any character in the chart.
Some classical writing on the childhood years speaks of "barriers" and other ominous-sounding markers. We do not use these or make that kind of verdict: there is no consistent method for finding them, and they easily give parents needless worry.
