When Do Luck Pillars Start? Forward or Backward, Three Days to a Year
"When does my luck change?" To answer that you need two things: which direction your luck pillars run, and at what age the first one begins. Both follow fixed rules, and once you have worked them out, the points where your luck changes every ten years are set.

Forward means counting on from the month pillar (Gui-Wei → Jia-Shen → Yi-You…); backward means counting back (Gui-Wei → Ren-Wu → Xin-Si…). The rule splits the combinations of sex and year exactly in half: in our sample, 50.0% run forward.
How the start age is worked out
- Running forward, count from the day of birth to the next jie (the first solar term of each month: Start of Spring, Awakening of Insects, Clear and Bright, and so on). Running backward, count back to the previous one.
- Convert the gap: three days make one year, so one day is four months and one two-hour Chinese hour is ten days.
- The result is the age at which the first luck pillar starts; after that the pillar changes every ten years.
Because the count goes down to the two-hour period, anyone without a birth hour can only get an approximate start time, which may be off by a few months. Counting birth as age 1, start ages in our sample run from 1 to 11:

How we counted: our engine cast one chart for every day from 1960 to 2005 (birth hour drawn by a fixed-seed random sample) and read each once as a man and once as a woman, 33,604 people in all, looking at the first eight luck pillars only. This describes how chart structures are distributed; it says nothing about anyone's fortune.
Born the same day: one set forward, one backward
Born July 10, 1990, Wu hour (a Geng-Wu year, which is yang)
- Woman: a woman born in a yang year runs backward, counting back to the previous jie (Minor Heat). It is very close, so her luck pillars start at age 2, and she enters her first pillar, Ren-Wu, around June 1991.
- Man: a man born in a yang year runs forward, counting on to the next jie (Start of Autumn), nearly a month away, so his luck pillars start only at age 11; he enters his first pillar, Jia-Shen, around January 2000.
- Result: their changeover years never line up. She changes luck pillar around 2001, 2011 and 2021; he changes around 2010, 2020 and 2030, and every one of their pillars carries a different stem and branch.
The year or two around a change
Classical texts call the handover between luck pillars jiao yun, "changing luck." In the year or two around it, people often notice the rhythm of life shifting: a new job, a move, a turn in a relationship, a change of outlook. There is no magic in the luck pillar; the main theme of a decade is changing key, and the old has not fully faded while the new has not fully arrived.
The practical approach is to know your changeover years and leave some slack around big decisions. If the next pillar is favorable, prepare early and be ready when the wind picks up; if it is unfavorable, use the time now to build a stronger base.

A straight word: a luck pillar is the weather, not the script
A luck pillar tells you roughly whether the next ten years lean toward sun or rain: in a smooth stretch things move more easily, and in a hard one it pays to hold steady and build up. But in the same weather, some people go out and some stay in; in the same unfavorable decade, some hold their ground and some charge ahead regardless. A chart describes tendencies, not events that must happen, and everything on this site is for reference and entertainment.

Why do men's and women's luck pillars run in different directions?
The classical rule is that men born in a yang year and women born in a yin year run forward, while men born in a yin year and women born in a yang year run backward. So a man and a woman born on the same day run opposite ways and start at different ages.
Can I work out my start age without a birth hour?
