Rudolph Valentino’s BaZi: A Drop of Early-Summer Water and a Thirteen-Year American Dream

Valentino was born in a small town in southern Italy and at 18 sailed alone to New York, where he worked as a dishwasher, a gardener and a taxi dancer in dance halls. His chart is Yi-Wei, Xin-Si, Gui-Chou, Geng-Shen (乙未 辛巳 癸丑 庚申): Gui Water (rain and dew, the gentlest water) born in the early-summer Si month, with Yi and Xin clashing on the stems and Chou and Wei clashing on the branches. Our engine reads it as balanced; Wealth is unfavorable, and his Zi Wei Wealth Palace is empty. In 1921 The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse made him famous overnight, and The Sheik the same year made him the biggest male star of the silent era. Five years later he died in New York at just 31.

Birth data: a birth record

Italy adopted Central European Time in 1893. Castellaneta lies almost 2° east of the 15° E reference meridian, so the true sun runs eight minutes ahead, and the equation of time in early May adds another three. The result is 15:11, just past the start of the Shen hour. To be safe, we cast all twelve hours:

Four Pillars and Ten Gods

A score of 0.432: balanced. The Gui Water is out of season and is held up by two Resource stems, Geng and Xin, and by the Water roots in Shen and Chou. The favorable elements are Metal (Resource) and Water (companions); the unfavorable ones are Fire (Wealth) and Earth (Officer). On climate, early summer runs hot and dry, and our engine judges that “the chart already has Water; it is moist enough.”

A chart that clashes on both stems and branches is traditionally read as “a life of upheaval, never settled.” He went from Italy to New York and from New York to Los Angeles, always on the move. But that reading only fits after the fact: most people born the same day, with the same double clash, never left home.

Before and after emigrating: one year changed everything

For a man born in a yin year (the year stem Yi is yin), the luck pillars run backwards, starting as early as age 1.

“fav / unfav” reads the stem first, then the branch: whether each one’s element is favorable (useful), unfavorable, or neither (neutral) for this chart.

His emigration and his overnight fame both fall in the two luck pillars Ji-Mao and Wu-Yin. The stems Ji Earth and Wu Earth are Officer, unfavorable for him; the branches Mao Wood and Yin Wood are Output, neither favorable nor unfavorable. These twenty years of luck were not good, and his first years in New York and Los Angeles were hard: he made his living as a paid dance partner.

The real turn came in a single year:

1917 is Ding-Si: stem and branch are both Fire, his unfavorable element, and in those years he was an extra in Los Angeles who could not land a decent part. 1921 is Xin-You: the stem Xin Metal and the branch You Metal are both Indirect Resource, favorable in stem and branch, and the very element he needs most. That year the screenwriter June Mathis overrode the doubters and had him cast in The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse; the film was a smash and he went from bit player to star overnight. Among the Ten Gods, Resource stands for patrons and sponsorship. The match is hard to miss, but we simply list it and go no further.

Valentino died in 1926, aged just 31. We do not discuss lifespan or health from a BaZi chart, and that holds for every page in this series.

When you change country, does your destiny change too?

Valentino is the fifth in the “moving abroad” group and the best one to end on. Like the other four, his birth chart is modest and his career only took off in America. But in the Zi Wei section below, recasting the chart in local time makes it flatter, not brighter. This counterexample shows one thing: recasting in another time zone just gives you another chart. Call it accurate when it fits and stay silent when it does not, and you are picking charts, not reading them. Our position does not change: BaZi records the moment of birth; place and era are multipliers. Hollywood in the 1920s was turning film stars into global idols, and he stepped up at exactly that moment.

Where does the chart miss his real life?

Zi Wei Dou Shu chart

The same birth time, cast in Zi Wei Dou Shu (San He school, the same engine as our Zi Wei chart tool, using the same true solar time as the BaZi chart above). BaZi weighs the five elements and what the chart favors; Zi Wei looks at which stars fall in which palace. The two systems ask different questions, so the Zi Wei chart is shown on its own first, followed by where it agrees and disagrees with the BaZi reading.

The gold frame is the Life Palace; the shaded palaces are its three-sides-and-four-directions (Wealth, Career, Travel). Solid badges are the birth-year transformations (Lu, Quan, Ke, Ji), red names are the six malefic stars, and the small word after a major star is its brightness.

Valentino’s Zi Wei birth chart has Tian Fu (bright) in the Life Palace in You. The Wealth Palace is empty, holding only Tian Ma and Huo Xing; Tian Xiang is brilliant in the Career Palace, and the opposite Travel Palace holds Wu Qu and Qi Sha with Lu Cun. Once again it is a “Tian Fu in the Life Palace, empty Wealth Palace” chart, the same family as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Greta Garbo and Audrey Hepburn in this series. Tian Ma, the “heavenly horse”, in the Wealth Palace means travel and earning a living far from home, which makes sense for an 18-year-old who crossed the ocean alone and washed dishes in New York. The Spouse Palace holds Zi Wei and Po Jun with Zi Wei Ke: the emperor star in the palace of love, which the old books read as “romance and the opposite sex are life’s great stage.” He was billed as the “Latin Lover” and women fans of his day went wild for him; this placement fits his image closely.

With the other birth-time versions, the Zi Wei chart becomes:

In BaZi the hour pillar changes every two hours while the day pillar and above stay put. In Zi Wei the Life Palace is set by the lunar month and the hour, so a different hour moves the Life Palace, the Body Palace, the bureau and every major star at once. The same dispute over a birth hour therefore usually matters more for Zi Wei than for BaZi.

Following the popular online method of “recasting in local time when you move”, converting his moment of birth to Los Angeles time lands in the Mao hour on the morning of the same day. This time the result goes the other way: the Life Palace becomes empty, holding only Tuo Luo and Di Jie, with a dim Tai Yang in the Wealth Palace and Ju Men in the Career Palace, flatter than the birth chart. The other four people in this group all “brighten” when recast; he alone does not. We include the counterexample because it makes the point exactly: recasting in another time zone produces another chart, not a more accurate one. Brighter or dimmer, it is an after-the-fact calculation, for entertainment only.

Western astrology chart

The same moment of birth, cast as a Western natal chart (tropical zodiac, Placidus houses, the same engine as our natal chart tool). A natal chart uses the sky at the moment of birth, so it needs no true-solar-time correction, but it does need the latitude of the birthplace to fix the Ascendant and the houses. BaZi and Zi Wei are both derived from the Chinese calendar, while a natal chart computes planetary positions directly. Because the three systems start from different places, the chart is listed on its own below, followed by where it agrees with the BaZi and Zi Wei readings.

Libra rising, the Moon also in Libra in the 1st house, and Venus as chart ruler: this is a Venus-led chart, and Libra and Venus both speak of beauty and charm. For an actor who swept the silent-film era as the “Latin Lover”, it is hard to imagine a more fitting arrangement. The Moon makes a trine to Neptune (fantasy, the screen, idols) with an orb of 0.0°, which tradition reads as someone who easily becomes the screen for other people’s fantasies. However, the Ascendant is at 0° Libra; a birth just 5 minutes earlier would give Virgo rising, so treat this point with caution. The Sun in Taurus falls in the 8th house (transformation and crisis), which, like the doubly clashing early-summer Gui Water of his BaZi, points to sharp turns in his life.
