Arnold Schwarzenegger’s BaZi: A Plain Chart and the Move That Changed Everything

Arnold’s birth time is on his birth certificate, and the chart is Ding-Hai, Ding-Wei, Geng-Xu, Wu-Yin (丁亥 丁未 庚戌 戊寅): Geng Metal (hard metal, the metal of blades and ore) born in the Wei month at the height of summer, with two Ding Fire Direct Officers showing on the year and month stems. Our engine reads it as balanced, and all twelve hours agree. This is not a chart that makes a practitioner sit up: no special structure, Wealth is unfavorable, and his Zi Wei Wealth Palace is empty. At 21 he arrived in America with one suitcase, went on to win seven Mr. Olympia titles, became an action star and was elected Governor of California. This page lays the chart out clearly and answers a question we hear a lot: when you move to another country, does your chart move with you?

Birth data: a birth certificate, and balanced in all twelve hours

Austria was on summer time in 1947, with clocks an hour ahead, so we first subtract 60 minutes. Thal lies close to 15° E, the reference meridian of Central European Time, and at the end of July the equation of time pulls the clock back a few more minutes. The result is 3:05, close to the start of the Yin hour. Fortunately, casting all twelve hours gives balanced every time, with Earth and Metal favorable in almost all of them, so even if the time is slightly off, the big picture does not change.

Four Pillars and Ten Gods

A score of 0.415: balanced. The Geng Metal is out of season and is held up by a chart full of Resource (Xu, Wei, Wu). The favorable elements are Earth (Resource) and Metal (companions); the unfavorable ones are Wood (Wealth) and Fire (Officer). On climate, a midsummer chart runs hot and dry, but the Hai Water in the year branch moistens it, and our engine judges that “the chart already has Water; it is moist enough.”

In one sentence: this is a chart held up by discipline and backing. A visible Direct Officer suggests someone who takes strict rules well, and plenty of Indirect Resource suggests support that comes through unconventional channels. He trained in weightlifting as a teenager in rural Austria through almost brutal self-discipline, which looks a lot like two Ding Fire Officers caught by a crowd of Resource. But Wealth is unfavorable and there is no special structure. Looking at the birth chart alone, nothing says “world-class”.

Before and after emigrating: unfavorable luck pillars, favorable years

For a man born in a yin year (the year stem Ding is yin), the luck pillars run backwards, starting at age 8.

“fav / unfav” reads the stem first, then the branch: whether each one’s element is favorable (useful), unfavorable, or neither (neutral) for this chart.

The most intriguing part of this table is the two luck pillars Bing-Wu and Yi-Si, 1954–1973: twenty straight years in which both stem and branch are unfavorable, Fire (Officer) and Wood (Wealth) taking turns. On a textbook reading, those should be twenty hard, frustrating years. Yet it was in the second of those decades that he became Mr. Universe, emigrated to America and won Mr. Olympia. The direction of his whole life was set in those ten years.

The individual years are even more interesting:

1968, the year he emigrated, is Wu-Shen; 1970, the year of his first Mr. Olympia, is Geng-Xu. In both years stem and branch are favorable: Earth is Resource and Metal is companions, exactly what this chart wants. Unfavorable luck pillar, favorable years: you could read it as “the environment kept wearing him down, but in the key years he happened to put his strength in the right place.” We list these correspondences and go no further.

When you change country, does your destiny change too?

Arnold is the first of the “moving abroad” group in this series. What they share is a modest birth chart and a career that only took off in another country. That leads many people to ask: if you move, should your chart be recalculated?

Our answer is no. BaZi records the moment of birth, and wherever you move, the year, month, day and hour of that moment do not change. The more defensible view is that place and era are multipliers. The same balanced Geng Metal and the same luck pillars of disciplined grind, left in rural Austria in the 1960s, might have produced a regional bodybuilding champion. Put into what was then the world’s biggest fitness industry and biggest film industry, the product was Arnold. That multiplier is not in the chart.

There is, however, a popular method online that recasts the chart in local time. We run it for you in the Zi Wei section below. The result is intriguing, but please treat it as entertainment.

Where does the chart miss his real life?

Zi Wei Dou Shu chart

The same birth time, cast in Zi Wei Dou Shu (San He school, the same engine as our Zi Wei chart tool, using the same true solar time as the BaZi chart above). BaZi weighs the five elements and what the chart favors; Zi Wei looks at which stars fall in which palace. The two systems ask different questions, so the Zi Wei chart is shown on its own first, followed by where it agrees and disagrees with the BaZi reading.

The gold frame is the Life Palace; the shaded palaces are its three-sides-and-four-directions (Wealth, Career, Travel). Solid badges are the birth-year transformations (Lu, Quan, Ke, Ji), red names are the six malefic stars, and the small word after a major star is its brightness.

Arnold’s Zi Wei birth chart has Tian Fu in the Life Palace (the Si palace). Tian Fu is the chief star of the Southern Dipper, traditionally a sign of steadiness and of holding on to what one has. But the Wealth Palace is empty apart from Di Jie, and Tian Xiang sits fallen in the Career Palace. The opposite palace, Travel, holds Zi Wei and Qi Sha, which the old books read as “a big stage away from home”. That one placement fits his life best; the rest of the Life, Wealth and Career triangle is nothing special. It is a modest chart.

With the other birth-time versions, the Zi Wei chart becomes:

In BaZi the hour pillar changes every two hours while the day pillar and above stay put. In Zi Wei the Life Palace is set by the lunar month and the hour, so a different hour moves the Life Palace, the Body Palace, the bureau and every major star at once. The same dispute over a birth hour therefore usually matters more for Zi Wei than for BaZi.

There is a popular idea online that when someone moves abroad to make their name, the chart should be recast in local time. Do that for Arnold, converting the moment of his birth to Los Angeles time, and you land in the You hour on the evening before. The whole chart changes: Po Jun in the Life Palace, Qi Sha with Lu Cun in the Wealth Palace, Tan Lang in the Career Palace. Life, Wealth and Career form a complete Sha-Po-Lang, the pattern of pioneering, risk and big swings, which looks far more like the life of a bodybuilding champion turned action star turned governor. But he was born in Austria; the Los Angeles clock time is just another way of writing the same instant, and traditional practice has no rule for recasting a chart when you move. This is picking a chart after knowing the outcome: an after-the-fact calculation, for entertainment only.

Western astrology chart

The same moment of birth, cast as a Western natal chart (tropical zodiac, Placidus houses, the same engine as our natal chart tool). A natal chart uses the sky at the moment of birth, so it needs no true-solar-time correction, but it does need the latitude of the birthplace to fix the Ascendant and the houses. BaZi and Zi Wei are both derived from the Chinese calendar, while a natal chart computes planetary positions directly. Because the three systems start from different places, the chart is listed on its own below, followed by where it agrees with the BaZi and Zi Wei readings.

His Sun in Leo falls in the 1st house, just behind the Ascendant. In astrology that is the classic signature of “presence is the capital”: bodybuilding, film, politics, at every stop he was the one out front. He has Cancer rising, and the chart ruler, the Moon, sits in Capricorn in the 6th house. The ruler landing in the house of daily work and training, in disciplined Capricorn, fits his image of spending hours a day in the gym and treating his body as his job. BaZi reads him as balanced Geng Metal favoring Earth and Metal, with discipline and structure at the core, which is the same story as a Capricorn Moon. Where it does not fit: a Cancer Ascendant gives a first impression of warmth, home and a certain reserve, almost the opposite of most people’s idea of a tough guy.

Domicile, exaltation, fall and detriment in brackets are the classical categories for how comfortably a planet works in a sign; they are not verdicts of good or bad.
