Bruce Lee’s BaZi: Jia Wood Born in a Dragon Year and a Dragon Hour, and a Martial Chart

Bruce Lee (Lee Jun-fan, 李小龍) was born in 1940, a Geng-Chen year, the Year of the Dragon. He was born a little after 7 a.m., which is the Chen hour, the hour of the Dragon as well. A man whose Chinese stage name was “Little Dragon” (Siu Lung) happening to be born in a Dragon year and a Dragon hour is a coincidence fans love to point out. His BaZi comes out as Geng-Chen, Ding-Hai, Jia-Xu, Wu-Chen (庚辰 丁亥 甲戌 戊辰), with two Chen branches in the chart. The structure of the chart is more interesting still: the Seven Killings on the year stem is held down by the Hurting Officer on the month stem, a textbook “martial” pattern in the classics.

Birth data

His father was a Cantonese opera singer touring America with his company at the time, which is why Bruce was born in San Francisco; the family took him back to Hong Kong when he was a few months old. San Francisco’s longitude puts the clock about 10 minutes ahead of the sun, and the equation of time in late November pushes the other way by about 13 minutes, so the two almost cancel: 7:12 becomes 7:13 in true solar time, the time shown by the sun at the birthplace, which BaZi uses. Clock time and true solar time both fall in the Chen hour (7:00–9:00), so there is no dispute over the hour in this chart.

Four Pillars and Ten Gods

Our engine reads it as balanced, with a score of 0.418. The Day Master is in season (Hai month), rooted (Wood is hidden in Hai and in Chen) and supported by Resource (Ren Water in Hai, Gui Water in Chen), but Wealth (Earth) makes up about 36% of the chart and wears the Day Master down a good deal. The favorable elements are Wood and Water; the unfavorable are Earth and Metal. Winter wood normally fears the cold, but Ding Fire shows on the month stem, so the climate is already warm enough and no extra Fire is needed.

Hurting Officer harnessing Seven Killings: the classic “martial” chart

Seven Killings is the force that attacks the Day Master: danger, confrontation, violence and authority. Hurting Officer is the force the Day Master gives out, the most rebellious and the most eager to show itself. When Hurting Officer restrains Seven Killings, tradition calls it “Hurting Officer harnessing Seven Killings” (shang guan jia sha): using your own fiercest energy to tame the threat from outside. In old readings this structure was often filed under military posts, generals and those who win by force.

Applied to Bruce Lee, the match is quite direct:

• Seven Killings, Geng Metal = confrontation and violence. As a teenager in Hong Kong he got into frequent street fights, and at 18, after getting into trouble, his family sent him back to America.
• Hurting Officer, Ding Fire = expression and rebellion. He had no patience for the forms and rules of the traditional styles and created his own, Jeet Kune Do, built on the idea of “using no way as way”. When he opened schools in America he taught non-Chinese students, which caused controversy in the Chinese martial arts world of the day.
• Hurting Officer harnessing Seven Killings = turning fighting into art and performance. He did not become a street brawler; he put martial arts on the screen and made it something the whole world could understand.

This is the traditional symbolic reading, and we set it out as such; the great majority of people with the same structure never became martial artists.

A day branch clashed from both sides: always on the move

The day branch is the seat you sit on yourself, and it is often read for the body and for the people closest to you. Bruce Lee’s day branch Xu is clashed from both sides by the two Chen branches of the year and the hour. A clash means upheaval, change and instability. All his life he went back and forth between Hong Kong and America: born in America, raised in Hong Kong, back to America at 18, and back to Hong Kong to make films once he was famous. His identity and his stage kept moving between the two.

A day branch clashed from both sides is also often used in fortune-telling to talk about health and accidents. This site does not read illness or lifespan from a chart, so here we only discuss the part about change.

Luck pillars, and the two years that made him famous

For a man born in a yang year (the year stem Geng is yang), the luck pillars run forwards, starting at age 5.

“fav / unfav” reads the stem first, then the branch: whether each one’s element is favorable (useful), unfavorable, or neither (neutral) for this chart.

The Ji-Chou luck pillar of 1954–1963 is unfavorable in both stem and branch, and its Chou Earth also punishes the Xu and “breaks” the two Chen branches in the natal chart. This is the decade of street fights in Hong Kong, of being forced to leave home at 18 and working his way alone in America.

In the Geng-Yin luck pillar from 1964, the stem Geng Metal is Seven Killings and unfavorable, but the branch Yin Wood is the “salary” position (lu) of Jia Wood, the spot where the Day Master is at its strongest. A Seven Killings luck pillar meeting the Hurting Officer already in the chart switches the whole “Hurting Officer harnessing Seven Killings” structure on, while the branch gives him a strong root. His martial arts demonstrations, his Hollywood work and his Hong Kong films all happened in this pillar.

1972 is a Ren-Zi year: both stem and branch are Water, both favorable, and it was the peak of his career, the year he could direct his own film.

One more small coincidence: his most famous line, “Be water, my friend”, was spoken in 1971, a Xin-Hai year, and Water is exactly the favorable element of his chart. It is purely an amusing coincidence, and we do not intend to infer anything from it.

Bruce Lee died in July 1973, at 32; Enter the Dragon was released after his death. We do not discuss lifespan from a BaZi chart, and that holds for every chart in this series.

Compared with Elon Musk: the same hour pillar, the same favorable elements

A Jia Wood Day Master born in the Chen hour always has Wu-Chen as the hour pillar, so sharing an hour pillar is no surprise. What is interesting is how each handles Seven Killings. Bruce Lee’s Seven Killings is suppressed head-on by Hurting Officer (Hurting Officer harnessing Seven Killings), relying on his own explosive force; Musk’s Seven Killings is converted into a resource (Seven Killings feeding Resource), relying on outside support. Faced with pressure, one hits back and the other turns it into fuel. This is a comparison in BaZi terms, not a verdict on personality.

Where does the chart miss his real life?

Zi Wei Dou Shu chart

The same birth time, cast in Zi Wei Dou Shu (San He school, the same engine as our Zi Wei chart tool, using the same true solar time as the BaZi chart above). BaZi weighs the five elements and what the chart favors; Zi Wei looks at which stars fall in which palace. The two systems ask different questions, so the Zi Wei chart is shown on its own first, followed by where it agrees and disagrees with the BaZi reading.

The gold frame is the Life Palace; the shaded palaces are its three-sides-and-four-directions (Wealth, Career, Travel). Solid badges are the birth-year transformations (Lu, Quan, Ke, Ji), red names are the six malefic stars, and the small word after a major star is its brightness.

Bruce Lee’s Zi Wei chart has Tian Xiang alone in the Life Palace (the Wei palace), facing Zi Wei and Po Jun in the opposite Travel Palace. Tian Xiang is a “seal” star: by nature it values rules and is good at mediating, which is not much like the public image of a martial arts superstar. But his Travel Palace, which describes how a person acts out in the world and away from home, holds Zi Wei with Po Jun: the emperor star paired with the star of spending and breaking, exactly the energy of tearing up old rules and founding a school of your own. In Zi Wei terms, his drive to break and build lives “out there”. The Life Palace also holds Tian Yue, along with Tuo Luo and Di Kong, and the old texts say people with Di Kong or Di Jie in the Life Palace often think in unconventional ways. The Career Palace is empty and borrows Lian Zhen and Tan Lang from the opposite Spouse Palace. Compared with BaZi: BaZi reads a balanced Jia Wood favoring Wood and Water, with the focus on how Seven Killings is handled; Zi Wei puts his hardness and his breaking force in the Travel Palace. Both systems see the “breaking”, just in different places. Where it does not fit is the Life Palace itself: people with Tian Xiang there are usually described as gentle coordinators.

Western astrology chart

The same moment of birth, cast as a Western natal chart (tropical zodiac, Placidus houses, the same engine as our natal chart tool). A natal chart uses the sky at the moment of birth, so it needs no true-solar-time correction, but it does need the latitude of the birthplace to fix the Ascendant and the houses. BaZi and Zi Wei are both derived from the Chinese calendar, while a natal chart computes planetary positions directly. Because the three systems start from different places, the chart is listed on its own below, followed by where it agrees with the BaZi and Zi Wei readings.

The Sun and the Ascendant are both in Sagittarius: a Sagittarius inside and out, direct, restless and determined to head out into the world. Moving from Hong Kong to America and carrying Chinese kung fu to the whole world is itself a Sagittarian journey. Even more striking is Scorpio: the Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars are packed into Scorpio, all in the 11th house, with Mars in its own sign (domicile) and in a square to Pluto only 0.3° from exact. Astrological tradition reads a tight Mars–Pluto aspect as extreme willpower and explosive force, which, applied to a martial artist who drove his body to its limits, reads almost like a textbook. BaZi calls him a Jia Wood with “Hurting Officer harnessing Seven Killings”, which is also about turning the force that restrains you into a weapon. On this point the two systems agree.
