Illness and Remedy in BaZi: When Too Much of a Good Thing Turns Unfavorable
The Ming-dynasty writer Zhang Nan put it in a line that is still quoted: "Only a chart with an illness can be noble; without a wound, nothing is remarkable." A flaw in a chart is not necessarily bad news. An illness with a remedy at hand makes for a chart with real tension in it. This method does not ask whether the Day Master is strong or weak. It asks whether one force in the chart has grown so large that it crowds out everything else.
Finding the illness: how much is "too much"?
Our engine applies three tests together. One Ten God group must have a weighted score of at least 3, make up at least 36% of the chart, and be at least one and a half times the size of the runner-up. Only when all three hold do we call it an illness. The bar is deliberately high, because this layer can overrule the strength reading, and a wrong call is costly.
How we counted: our engine cast one chart for every day from 1960 to 2005, with a randomly drawn birth hour, 16,802 charts in all. This describes how chart structures are distributed; it says nothing about anyone's luck.
37.0% sounds like a lot, but most of the time the remedy is already in the base layer's favorable set. A strong Day Master overloaded with Peers, for example, already favors the Officer and Output; illness and remedy only moves them to the front. The two figures on the right are the ones where the answer actually changes.
Five illnesses, five remedies
Illnesses are sorted by Ten God group: whichever group runs out of control has its own remedy. Many of the four-character sayings in the classics are describing exactly this.

"Too much Earth buries Metal" deserves a word of its own. By the producing cycle, Earth gives birth to Metal; Earth is Metal's mother. But pile on too much Earth and the Metal is buried where it cannot shine. A weak Day Master would normally take more Resource, but once Resource reaches this point, more of it only buries you deeper.
Why a remedy can overrule strength

- The illness: Geng Metal is born in Chen month, and the year branch Chou and month branch Chen are both damp Earth, which produces Geng Metal as its Resource. Weighted, Resource alone is close to 40% of the chart and far ahead of the next group: Resource has grown into an illness.
- Supporting and suppressing: on the other side, two Ren Water stems and two Wu Fire branches drain quite a lot. Overall the chart is near balanced with drain slightly ahead, so the base layer takes Earth and Metal.
- Illness and remedy: Earth is the illness. The remedy is Wood, which to Geng Metal is Wealth: it breaks up the Earth that buries the Metal.
- Result: Earth flips from favorable to unfavorable and Wood moves to the front. Final favorable WoodMetal, unfavorable FireEarth.
The strength reading only asks whether more is helping you or draining you. It cannot see that one member of the helping side has grown out of control. That is the blind spot illness and remedy covers.
When the remedy arrives, you notice
People with illness-and-remedy charts often feel their ups and downs sharply. When a luck period or year brings the remedy, something stuck for years suddenly gives way; when it brings more of the illness, the same old problems come round again. The classics say a chart with a heavy illness and a remedy tends to achieve more than one with neither, and this is the kind of charged chart they mean.
Do not let the word "illness" alarm you. It only means a structural imbalance. It has nothing to do with physical health and does not make a chart bad. If there is no remedy in the chart itself, that is fine too: luck periods and years can bring it, and so can your line of work and way of living. For someone with too much Wealth and a weak Day Master, Peers are the remedy, which in daily life means finding partners to carry things with, not trying to take every opportunity alone.
A straight word: a favorable element is a direction, not a guarantee
Choosing the useful god is the most argued-over part of BaZi. Show one chart to three teachers and getting three answers is nothing unusual. What we do is write the rules down and show every layer, so you can see how an answer was reached instead of being handed a verdict to trust. BaZi is not an exact science, and everything on this site is for reference and entertainment. A favorable element gives you a direction to adjust toward; the walking is still yours.

How does illness and remedy relate to strong or weak?
Strong or weak compares the total of everything that supports the Day Master with everything that drains it. Illness and remedy asks whether one group within those has grown out of control. Both can apply at once; when they conflict, the remedy wins: it becomes favorable and the illness becomes unfavorable.
What does "too much Earth buries Metal" mean?
Earth produces Metal, so Earth is Metal's Resource. But with too much Earth, the Metal is buried and cannot work. Earth stops being a helper and becomes the illness, and Wood (Wealth to Metal) is used to break it up. The same logic gives too much Water setting Wood adrift, too much Wood smothering Fire, too much Fire scorching Earth, and too much Metal muddying Water.
Is it bad to have an "illness" in my chart?
No. It is only a structural imbalance, unrelated to health or to good and bad fortune. The classics even hold that a chart with an illness and a remedy tends to achieve more. What matters is knowing your remedy and using it in your timing and your life.
What if my chart has no remedy?
Luck periods and years can bring it, and the years that do often mark a clear turn. In daily life you can also supply it through your work, your partners and your habits. For a chart overloaded with the Officer, where Resource is the remedy, further study, a mentor and formal qualifications are all practical ways of taking it.
