What the relationship actually is

Start with the structure. Chou is damp earth, hiding Ji Earth, Gui Water and Xin Metal. Wei is dry earth, hiding Ji Earth, Ding Fire and Yi Wood. Both have Ji Earth as their main qi, which gives this clash its own name: a peer clash. Unlike Zi–Wu or Mao–You, the two elements do not directly overcome each other.

That does not make it harmless. What a Chou–Wei clash actually strikes is what is stored inside the earth: Chou's Gui Water and Xin Metal against Wei's Ding Fire and Yi Wood. Water against Fire, Metal against Wood, while the Earth itself is untouched. This is why the classical description is opening the store — the vault is knocked open and what was inside comes out.

Offending Tai Sui is not a sentence
