Natal Moon Phase Calculator: Which of the Eight Lunar Phases Were You Born Under?
Your Sun sign speaks of who you want to become and your Moon sign of what you need emotionally; your natal Moon phase speaks of the relationship between the two. At the moment you were born, was the Moon on its way from New to Full, or on its way back from Full to New? The astrologer Dane Rudhyar divided the lunar cycle into eight stages, and people born in each stage go about things at a somewhat different rhythm.

The “Sun–Moon angle” is the Moon’s ecliptic longitude minus the Sun’s (how many degrees the Moon is ahead of the Sun). “Share of people” is our own count over 16,802 moments, one random moment on each day from 1960 to 2005; each type spans 45°, about three and a half days, so every share comes out close to one in eight.
New Moon type (0°–45°)
Instinct, initiative, setting off on impulse. The Sun and Moon are still close together and the Moon is all but invisible in the sky. People born in this phase act on instinct and a burst of drive; they like starting things and often get going before they have thought it through. The strength is the courage to begin and a freedom from the past. The lesson is learning to look back and tell what they truly want from what was only a passing impulse.
Crescent type (45°–90°)
Breaking free, trying things out, rooting a new direction. The Moon has just appeared as a thin sliver. People born in this phase have a direction they want to go in, yet often feel old habits, family or circumstances pulling them back. Their life theme is breaking free and putting down roots: resisting the inertia of the past while finding resources and laying foundations for something new. Their willpower and resilience usually run deeper than they look.
First Quarter type (90°–135°)
Action, decisiveness, growth through conflict. The Sun and Moon are square and the Moon is half lit. This is one of the most action-oriented phases: these people want to deal with an obstacle head-on, are used to making decisions under pressure and are not much afraid of conflict. They are good at building things and pushing them out into the world. The thing to watch is treating everything as a battle to be won; sometimes going slower gets you further.
Gibbous type (135°–180°)
Improving, analyzing, wanting to do it better. The Moon is nearly full, with just a little to go. People born in this phase always feel things could be a bit better; they ask why, look for methods and fix the details. They value learning and self-improvement and are often the ones on a team who polish the work until it is right. The lesson is accepting “good enough”: perfection is always one step ahead, but results only count once they are handed over.
Full Moon type (180°–225°)
Awareness, relationships, knowing yourself through contrast. The Sun and Moon face each other across the sky and the Moon is fully lit. People born in this phase see their own state clearly and especially need other people in order to know themselves; relationships are a major stage in their lives. They are objective and self-aware, and often feel two needs pulling against each other. The lesson is integration: making room for both ideals and feelings, both self and other.
Disseminating type (225°–270°)
Sharing, communicating, passing on what you have learned. The Moon begins to wane from full. People born in this phase feel an urge to tell others what they have understood: teaching, writing, mentoring and promoting an idea all suit them. They believe in certain things and want others to understand them too. The thing to watch is being in too much of a hurry to persuade; the truths you believe in also need checking again from time to time.
Last Quarter type (270°–315°)
Reflection, a change of course, acting on inner standards. The Sun and Moon are square again, this time with the Moon waning. People born in this phase often find, at some stage of life, that what they used to believe no longer fits, and so they rework their values. Outwardly they may carry on as usual while inwardly they have already turned. They tend to be principled and not inclined to follow the crowd. The lesson is letting the change show gradually; there is no need to overturn everything at once.
Balsamic type (315°–360°)
Finishing, distilling, sowing for the next round. Only a thin crescent is left, visible just before sunrise. This is the closing stretch of a cycle. People born in this phase often feel they are walking ahead of their time or behind it; they are perceptive, need solitude, and are more at ease than most with endings and letting go. They are good at wrapping things up and condensing experience into wisdom to be used in the next stage.
The natal Moon phase and Sun–Moon aspects
The natal Moon phase and the aspects are two readings of the same thing. New Moon types mostly have the Sun and Moon in conjunction, Full Moon types mostly in opposition, and First Quarter and Last Quarter types in square. An aspect holds only when two planets are close to a particular angle, while the phases sort the whole cycle, so everyone has a natal Moon phase but not everyone has a Sun–Moon aspect. For how to read the aspects, see Sun aspects.
What to notice is the difference between the first half and the second: both are squares, yet the First Quarter type (Moon waxing) leans toward building things up, and the Last Quarter type (Moon waning) toward reviewing and changing course. That is information the aspect alone cannot give you; only the phase shows it.
Is it accurate with only a birthday?
In most cases, yes. The Moon moves about 12° a day relative to the Sun and each type is 45° wide, so without a birth time, calculating for noon is off by six or seven degrees at most. Only people born within 7° of a boundary between two types (about 31.1%) might be placed in the neighboring type, and the tool lists both. Remember to choose the time zone of the place where you were born.
The natal Moon phase and your lunar birthday
A date in the Chinese lunar calendar is itself a Moon phase: day 1 is the New Moon, and days 15 and 16 are the Full Moon. So a lunar birthday gives a rough idea of the natal phase: about day 1 to day 4 is the New Moon type, around day 8 the First Quarter type, day 15 to day 18 the Full Moon type, around day 23 the Last Quarter type, and the end of the month the Balsamic type. Lunar dates are counted in whole days, though, so near a boundary the tool above is more exact. You can look up a lunar birthday with the Chinese lunar calendar converter.
A straight word: Moon phases are astronomy; wishes are custom
The moments of New Moons, Full Moons, solar eclipses and lunar eclipses are astronomical facts that can be calculated, and the dates on this page can be checked against an astronomical almanac. “New Moon wishes work better,” “the Full Moon is for letting go” and “eclipses are turning points of fate” are sayings from astrology and folk tradition, with no scientific research behind them. Treating the New Moon as a monthly reminder to sort out your goals, and the Full Moon as a point to look back and check, is a decent habit; there is no need to put off a decision because a certain day is an eclipse. Natal Moon phase FAQ
How is the natal Moon phase calculated?
Take the Moon’s ecliptic longitude at the moment of birth and subtract the Sun’s, giving an angle between 0° and 360°. Every 45° is one phase: 0°–45° is the New Moon type, 45°–90° the Crescent type, and so on up to 315°–360°, the Balsamic type. The tool above works out the angle and the type directly.
Is the natal Moon phase the same as the Moon sign?
No. The Moon sign is which of the twelve zodiac signs the Moon was in; the natal Moon phase is the Moon’s position relative to the Sun, in other words how full the Moon was on the day you were born. Two people with the Moon in Scorpio can be a New Moon type and a Full Moon type. For the Moon sign, use the Moon sign calculator.
What are people born at the Full Moon like?
Full Moon types were born with the Sun and Moon facing each other across the sky. Astrological tradition says they are strongly self-aware, value relationships, often come to know themselves through other people, and are more likely to feel two inner needs pulling against each other. This is a tendency, to be read together with the whole chart.
What are people born at the New Moon like?
New Moon types were born with the Moon very close to the Sun. Astrological tradition says they act on instinct and drive, like starting new things and do not hesitate much. In turn, looking back to review, and seeing things from someone else’s point of view, are skills they have to practice.
Can I find my natal Moon phase without a birth time?
Yes. Calculating for noon is off by six or seven degrees at most, and only people born right near the boundary between two phases (about 31.1%) have two possibilities, which the tool lists together.
