Transformation Structures in BaZi: When the Day Master Is Combined Into Another Element
Most of the time, a stem combination is only a tie: two stems are bound together and weakened, but each is still itself. Only when every condition is in place is the Day Master truly transformed, and the whole chart is then read by the transformed element. That is a transformation structure, hua qi ge (化氣格).
The five stem combinations and what they transform into

Six conditions for a real transformation

How we counted: our engine cast one chart for every day from 1960 to 2005, with the birth hour drawn by a fixed-seed random sample, 16,802 charts in all. Transformation and dominant-element structures were checked condition by condition against this site's rules; follow structures use the hard-evidence gate of our strength engine.
The condition that most often gets in the way is a rooted Day Master: as long as the day stem has even one hidden stem of its own element in the branches, it will not transform. That is why transformation structures are so rare in practice.
Wu and Gui transform to Fire: a transformation structure that holds
Born June 13, 1966, Wu hour (11 a.m.–1 p.m.)
- The combination: the day stem Gui Water sits right next to the hour stem Wu Earth. Wu and Gui combine, and the transformed element is Fire.
- Commanding the month, with backup: the chart is born in Wu month, whose Main Qi is Fire; Bing Fire shows on the year stem, and the year, month and hour branches are all Wu. Fire is overwhelming.
- No root for the Day Master: the four branches are Wu, Wu, Mao and Wu, and not one of their hidden stems is Water. Gui Water has no root and can only go along with the transformation.
- Nothing attacks the transformed element: apart from the Day Master itself, no Water in the chart attacks Fire. All six conditions hold: ✓ Day stem Gui Water sits right next to the hour stem Wu Earth and combines with it; ✓ The transformed element, Fire, commands the month; ✓ Fire has backup: it shows on another stem, or a branch other than the month has Fire as its Main Qi; ✓ No clash, and no second stem competing for the combination; ✓ The Day Master, Gui Water, has no root in the branches; ✓ Fire is not attacked by Water.
- Favorable and unfavorable: a Transform-to-Fire Structure favors Fire and the Wood that feeds it, and disfavors Water (which attacks the transformed element) and any luck period that gives the Day Master its root back. Our strength engine reads this chart as a Follow-Wealth structure: Gui Water has no root and goes with the dominant Fire, which is its Wealth. Transformation and Follow-Wealth are two different readings, but both favor Fire and Wood and disfavor Water.
True and false transformation
The classics call a chart that meets all six conditions a "true transformation" and one that falls a little short but is roughly formed a "false transformation," adding that a false transformation has to wait for a luck period to supply what is missing before its benefits appear. We count only true transformations as transformation structures and file false ones as near misses, read as ordinary charts, because getting it wrong turns the favorable elements upside down.
Favorable and unfavorable elements
- Favorable: the transformed element itself, and the element that feeds it (a Transform-to-Fire Structure favors Fire and Wood, for example).
- Unfavorable: the element that attacks the transformed element (Water, for Transform-to-Fire), and luck periods that give the Day Master its root back; once the Day Master is rooted again, the transformation cannot hold.
- How we handle it: when our strength engine detects a true transformation, it flags "leans toward a transformation structure; a second look is advised," but it still calculates favorable elements by supporting and suppressing. A straight word: special structures are rare, and they do not mean a better life
In our sample, charts that meet the classical conditions for any special structure are just 0.98% of more than sixteen thousand. It is common to hear "very weak" or "there is a stem combination" taken straight to a follow or transformation structure, and that is far too loose. A special structure changes how favorable elements are chosen, not whether a life is good or bad; get it wrong and the favorable set is turned upside down. What is a transformation structure in BaZi?
The day stem combines with the adjacent month or hour stem, and the combination truly transforms: the transformed element commands the month, has backup, is not attacked, the Day Master has no root, and there is no clash or rival combination. The chart is then read by the transformed element.
Does a stem combination always transform?
No. Most are only ties, "combined but not transformed." In our sample about 18.7% of charts have the day stem combining with an adjacent stem, and only 0.05% transform.
What does a transformation structure favor?
