Punishing Tai Sui: A Year of Friction, Rules and Responsibility
A punishment is the most roundabout relation among the twelve branches: not a head-on collision like a clash, but two sides holding each other back and making things difficult. A year that punishes Tai Sui usually shows up as friction: tugs over rules, responsibilities and relationships. Handled well, that pressure is also a chance to get things right.
The three punishments and self-punishment

Yin-Si-Shen and Chou-Xu-Wei are punishments of three branches, and within them the pairs Yin-Shen and Chou-Wei are also Six Clashes. We (and our 2027 pages) count those two pairs as clashes and do not count them again as punishments. So the Monkey in a Yin year and the Ox in a Wei year are listed only as clashing Tai Sui.
How a punishment year tends to feel
- Rules and responsibility weigh more: reviews, contracts, paperwork and regulations take up more of the year.
- Awkwardness between people: things not said clearly, overlapping roles, blurry boundaries.
- In a self-punishment year: overthinking, and reversing your own decisions again and again.
How to use a punishment year
The pressure of a punishment is often a chance to get the rules straight: read the contract closely, write the division of work down, say where your boundaries are. In a self-punishment year, give yourself a deadline and decide when it arrives, rather than circling the same question.

What does punishing Tai Sui mean?
Your zodiac branch and the year's branch form a punishment: Zi-Mao, Yin-Si, Si-Shen, Chou-Xu, Xu-Wei, or the self-punishment of Chen, Wu, You or Hai meeting the same branch. It often reads as friction and the pressure of rules and responsibility.
Why does the Monkey not punish Tai Sui in a Yin year?
Yin and Shen belong to the Yin-Si-Shen punishment, but they are also one of the Six Clashes. We count Yin-Shen and Chou-Wei as clashes and do not count them again as punishments, so in a Yin year the Monkey is listed only as clashing Tai Sui.
What is self-punishment?
Chen, Wu, You and Hai form a self-punishment when they meet the same branch, so the zodiac years of the Dragon, Horse, Rooster and Pig count both as sharing the branch of Tai Sui and as punishing it.
What should I watch in a year that punishes Tai Sui?
Pay more attention to rules, documents and personal boundaries: read contracts closely and write down who does what. In a self-punishment year, give yourself deadlines so you do not keep going back over the same decision.
