The Hour Pillar in BaZi: What Goes Missing Without It
Each pillar has its place. An old image says the year pillar is the root, the month the shoot, the day the flower and the hour the fruit. The hour pillar comes last and is the fruit: children, later life and what your work finally yields all sit here. Without the birth hour, this is the piece you lose.
Four layers of meaning

How much weight the hour pillar carries
- Strength: in our scoring the hour stem counts one share and the hour branch one and a half, together about a fifth of the chart. So a borderline chart can go from weak to balanced on a single hour.
- Structure: if a hidden stem of the month branch shows up only in the hour stem, the hour decides the structure's name; if nothing shows, the main hidden stem is used.
- Climate: the hour branch is the temperature of the day: the night hours Zi and Hai against the midday hours Wu and Si shift the cold-hot, damp-dry reading.
- Combinations and clashes: when the hour branch clashes or combines with the day branch (the spouse palace), it is often read as the pull, or the fit, between home and work, inner and outer life.
How we counted: we took every fourth day from 1960 to 2005, 4,201 birthdays in all, cast a chart for each of the twelve hours from Early Zi to Hai, and used our engine to compare strength, useful god and structure across the twelve.

A straight word: without the hour pillar, a quarter of the chart is missing
A BaZi chart has four pillars, and each missing one is a missing piece of the puzzle. Three pillars still show a great deal, but if your strength sits right on the line, you were born on a solar term day, or the hour decides your structure, the conclusions will wobble without it. We would rather mark what can change with the hour than pretend to know it for you. Everything on this site is for reference and entertainment.

What does the hour pillar mean in BaZi?
As a palace it stands for children, juniors and people who work under you; as a stage of life, later years. It is also read as your inner thinking and the harvest of your work.
Is the hour pillar important?
Yes. It carries about a fifth of the strength score, and its stem can decide the structure. For a borderline chart, changing the hour can change both strength and the useful god.
Can I read children without the hour pillar?
Partly. The children star (the Officer for a man, Output for a woman) can still be seen in three pillars, but the children palace is the hour pillar itself, so that part needs the hour.
