Three-Pillar BaZi: Five Things You Can Read Without the Hour
The heart of a BaZi chart is the Day Master, which sits in the day pillar; the weightiest single factor is the month branch, in the month pillar. Neither needs the hour. So a three-pillar chart is not unreadable. The job is to separate what you can read with confidence from what deserves a question mark.

How we counted: we took every fourth day from 1960 to 2005, 4,201 birthdays in all, cast a chart for each of the twelve hours from Early Zi to Hai, and used our engine to compare strength, useful god and structure across the twelve.
Three things that need a question mark

The majority answer for strength and the useful god still counts for something. In our test the majority strength reading covers 9.2 hours on average, and 60.3% of birthdays have nine or more hours agreeing. Read it as "which way the chart leans," not as a final verdict.
The least stable kind of chart: born on a solar term day
Born October 8, 1976 (Gregorian), hour unknown
- The solar term: Cold Dew arrived at 11:58 that day. Born before it, the chart has the Bing-Chen year, Ding-You month; after it, the Bing-Chen year, Wu-Xu month. The month pillar changes, and the structure with it: most of the earlier hours give an Indirect Resource structure, the later ones a Direct Officer structure.
- Strength: of the twelve hours, 5 read weak, 6 balanced and 1 strong.
- Luck pillars: born on the day of a term, this chart sits extremely close to a solar term, so the luck pillars start anywhere from age 1 to 11, nearly ten years apart.
- How to read it: on a birthday like this, without the hour even the three pillars are uncertain. The first job is to recover the birth time; failing that, at least find out whether it was morning or afternoon.

A BaZi chart has four pillars, and each missing one is a missing piece of the puzzle. Three pillars still show a great deal, but if your strength sits right on the line, you were born on a solar term day, or the hour decides your structure, the conclusions will wobble without it. We would rather mark what can change with the hour than pretend to know it for you. Everything on this site is for reference and entertainment.

Is a three-pillar BaZi chart accurate?
The Day Master, month branch, structure and luck pillar sequence are reliable. Strength, the useful god and anything tied to the hour pillar can change with the hour and should be held loosely.
Can a three-pillar chart show marriage?
Partly. The spouse palace is the day branch and the spouse star is read from the Ten Gods, both within three pillars. How the hour pillar combines or clashes with the day branch, often read as the pull between home and the outside world, needs the hour.
How do I judge strength from three pillars?
Start from the month branch and the roots in the three pillars, but remember the hour pillar carries about a fifth of the chart's weight and can tip a borderline chart. In our test only 21.2% of birthdays have the same strength in all twelve hours, so cast all twelve.
