Lionel Messi’s BaZi: a Jia Wood with “Wood and Fire Shining”, and Two Birth Times That Don’t Match

Messi’s birth time comes in two versions. In 2021 an Argentine astrologer obtained his birth certificate, which says 8:30 pm; his biographer wrote that he was born just before six in the morning. The two times are fourteen hours apart and give completely different hour pillars. On top of that he was born in the southern hemisphere, where June is winter. The good news is that when we run every one of these variables, the favorable elements are Water and Wood every time. This page uses the birth certificate as the main chart and looks at how a “Wood and Fire shining” chart walked its way to eight Ballon d’Ors and a World Cup.

Birth data: certificate vs biography

Rosario lies more than 15 degrees west of the meridian that Argentine time is based on (45°W), so the Sun runs more than an hour behind the clock there. 8:30 pm on the clock is only 19:25 in true solar time. We use the birth certificate as the main chart: a document is usually more reliable than a memory written down years later, and that is the rule throughout this series.

Twelve hours, two hemispheres: the favorable elements never change

With the hour in doubt and a southern-hemisphere birth on top, we ran every variable:

The table uses the southern-hemisphere convention. The northern-hemisphere convention gives exactly the same strength and favorable elements; only the note on climate differs.

Of the twelve hours, 7 read weak and 5 read balanced, so the strength moves with the hour. But the favorable elements are Water and Wood in every hour and under both hemisphere conventions, and Earth and Metal are always unfavorable. So this page reads the chart through its favorable elements only and does not make much of “weak or balanced”.

The southern-hemisphere question is the same one raised on the Elon Musk page: June is winter in Argentina, and our engine flips the seasons when judging climate (tiao hou). On the northern convention the Wu month is high summer and the chart needs Water to cool it; on the southern convention it is winter and there is no shortage of Water. Either way the favorable elements come out as Water and Wood, so this chart is untouched by the hemisphere debate.

Four Pillars and Ten Gods: “Wood and Fire shining”

Jia Wood born in summer, with both Bing and Ding Fire showing on the stems, is what the tradition calls “Wood and Fire shining” (mu huo tong ming): the Wood is the substance and the Fire is the light it gives off when it burns. The classics describe such charts as bright, gifted and highly expressive, the textbook structure of a “talent”. In the Ten Gods, Eating God and Hurting Officer stand for expression, skill and creation.

On a footballer, Output is what happens on the pitch: the dribble, the pass, the finish. The thing people say most often about Messi is that his feel for the ball seems instinctive, as if he were born with it. That is a symbolic match, and we list it as one; the great majority of people with the same structure never became athletes.

But Output is what the Day Master gives away, and the more it gives, the more tired it gets. The Wood in this chart is not deeply rooted and the two Fires are strong, so talent pours out constantly while the chart itself needs Water (Resource) to top it up and Wood (companions) to hold it up. That is why the favorable elements are Water and Wood.

Luck pillars

For a man born in a yin year (the year stem Ding is yin), the luck pillars run backwards, starting at age 7. Both birth times give exactly the same luck pillars.

“fav / unfav” reads the stem first, then the branch: whether each one’s element is favorable (useful), unfavorable, or neither (neutral) for this chart.

In the Jia-Chen luck pillar (2003–2012), the stem Jia Wood (Friend) is favorable and the branch Chen Earth is unfavorable. These were his most glorious ten years at club level, and also ten years of repeated disappointment with Argentina: the 2006 and 2010 World Cups both ended in the quarter-finals.

From 2013, two luck pillars in a row are favorable in both stem and branch: Gui-Mao and Ren-Yin, Water and Wood, exactly the two things this chart needs most. Every title he has won with the national team came inside these two pillars.

Three key years

2016 is a Bing-Shen year: Bing Fire is Eating God and Shen Metal is Seven Killings, so stem and branch are both unfavorable. 2022 is a Ren-Yin year: Ren Water is Indirect Resource and Yin Wood is Friend, so both are favorable, and the Gui-Mao luck pillar is fully favorable too. With the luck pillar and the year stacked together, he finally lifted the World Cup at 35. One year all unfavorable, one all favorable, lining up with the lowest and the highest points of his international career.

2021, Xin-Chou, is more complicated. Both stem and branch of the year are unfavorable, yet he won the Copa América he had waited years for. The same year he was forced out of Barcelona and cried at the press conference. The biggest gain and the biggest loss arrived in the same year, and favorable/unfavorable alone cannot explain a year like that, so we simply record it.

The stems and branches of 2021 and 2022 are all Water, Wood, Earth or Metal, whose status is the same in every one of the twelve hour versions, so even with the birth time in dispute, the comparison for these two years holds. The Bing Fire of 2016 depends on the version: it is unfavorable in the 7 hours that read weak (including the birth-certificate version) and not unfavorable in the versions that read balanced. So 2016’s “all unfavorable” holds only in the weak versions, and the birth-certificate version happens to be one of them.

Compared with Elon Musk: two Jia Wood men born in a southern-hemisphere June

Both were born at the end of June in the southern hemisphere, both have a Jia Wood Day Master in the Wu month, and both favor Water and Wood. The difference is the month stem. Messi shows Bing Fire, Eating God: talent bursting outward, the “performer” Jia Wood. Musk shows Jia Wood, Friend: another layer of himself, the “carry-the-load” Jia Wood. One pours his energy into the pitch, the other into his companies. It is a fun comparison, not a verdict on character.

Where does the chart miss his real life?

Zi Wei Dou Shu chart

The same birth time, cast in Zi Wei Dou Shu (San He school, the same engine as our Zi Wei chart tool, using the same true solar time as the BaZi chart above). BaZi weighs the five elements and what the chart favors; Zi Wei looks at which stars fall in which palace. The two systems ask different questions, so the Zi Wei chart is shown on its own first, followed by where it agrees and disagrees with the BaZi reading.

The gold frame is the Life Palace; the shaded palaces are its three-sides-and-four-directions (Wealth, Career, Travel). Solid badges are the birth-year transformations (Lu, Quan, Ke, Ji), red names are the six malefic stars, and the small word after a major star is its brightness.

On the birth-certificate time, Messi’s Zi Wei chart has Po Jun alone in the Life Palace (the Shen palace), with Qi Sha in the Wealth Palace and Tan Lang in the Career Palace, so the Life, Wealth and Career palaces together form the Sha-Po-Lang pattern. Sha-Po-Lang is Zi Wei’s classic pattern of charging ahead, change and breaking new ground, and Po Jun itself is the star that dares to tear down and rebuild. Set against the BaZi reading (a weak Jia Wood that favors Water and Wood), the two systems describe different sides of him: BaZi stresses the need for support, Zi Wei paints someone who keeps breaking through. The biography version (early morning) instead puts Tian Ji and Tian Liang together in the Life Palace, with Tian Ji taking Ke: clever, orderly, the strategist type. The two Zi Wei versions are very different. In BaZi all twelve hours agree on the favorable elements, while in Zi Wei a different hour gives a different person, a clear example of how much more sensitive Zi Wei is to the birth time.

With the other birth-time versions, the Zi Wei chart becomes:

In BaZi the hour pillar changes every two hours while the day pillar and above stay put. In Zi Wei the Life Palace is set by the lunar month and the hour, so a different hour moves the Life Palace, the Body Palace, the bureau and every major star at once. The same dispute over a birth hour therefore usually matters more for Zi Wei than for BaZi.

The BaZi section discussed whether the southern hemisphere changes the climate adjustment. Zi Wei works from the lunar month, day and hour, and our Zi Wei engine makes no adjustment for the hemisphere.

Western astrology chart

The same moment of birth, cast as a Western natal chart (tropical zodiac, Placidus houses, the same engine as our natal chart tool). A natal chart uses the sky at the moment of birth, so it needs no true-solar-time correction, but it does need the latitude of the birthplace to fix the Ascendant and the houses. BaZi and Zi Wei are both derived from the Chinese calendar, while a natal chart computes planetary positions directly. Because the three systems start from different places, the chart is listed on its own below, followed by where it agrees with the BaZi and Zi Wei readings.

On the birth-certificate time of 20:30, the Cancer Sun and Gemini Moon both fall in the 5th house (play, creativity and self-expression), with Aquarius rising. The 5th is the house of play, and football has always looked like play for him, so this is an easy reading. A Cancer Sun centers on home and family, and he married the girl from his hometown of Rosario he had known since childhood, which also sits well with a Cancer Sun. The biography time of 5:55 gives Gemini rising with the chart ruler Mercury in the 2nd house, shifting the manner from Aquarian detachment to Gemini nimbleness. Both versions have the same Sun and Moon signs; only the houses and the Ascendant differ. As with the BaZi finding that all twelve hours favor Water and Wood, the dispute over the time does not change the big picture.

With the other birth time, the chart becomes:

Planets move very little in a day, so the Sun and Mercury through Pluto are almost identical in both versions. What changes most is the Ascendant and the houses: the whole wheel turns by roughly one house every two hours.

Domicile, exaltation, fall and detriment in brackets are the classical categories for how comfortably a planet works in a sign; they are not verdicts of good or bad.
