Anita Mui’s BaZi: an Autumn Fire Facing Two Officer Stars

Anita Mui (Mui Yim-fong, 梅艷芳, 1963–2003) was singing with her older sister at an amusement park and on the streets by the age of four. At 18 she won the first New Talent Singing Awards, and went on to become a queen of Hong Kong pop music and film, remembered as the “Daughter of Hong Kong.” Her birth hour has never been made public. Her year, month and day pillars are Gui-Mao, Ren-Xu, Bing-Xu (癸卯 壬戌 丙戌): Bing Fire born in late autumn, with Ren Water (Seven Killings) and Gui Water (Direct Officer) showing on the stems, and the month stem Ren clashing the Day Master directly. We cast all twelve hours: the favorable elements are Wood and Fire every time, and most hours read weak. This page reads the three pillars and is honest about where they do not fit.

Bing Fire is out of season, attacked by Ren and Gui (Officer and Killings) and drained by two Xu Earth Eating Gods, so the chart favors Wood (Resource) to feed it and Fire (companions) to help it, and disfavors Earth (Output), Metal (Wealth) and Water (Officer). Fortunately the Mao Wood year branch combines with Xu Earth into Fire, which is like the chart finding itself a little backing of its own.

A woman’s chart with Seven Killings showing on a stem and clashing the Day Master is traditionally read as “under great pressure, hard-tempered, with a streetwise, loyal edge.” In the entertainment world she was known as “Sister Mui” (Mui Je), famous for loyalty, generosity and looking after younger performers, and in 2003, during the SARS outbreak, she used her position as president of the Hong Kong Performing Artistes Guild to organize a fundraising concert. That sits close to the Seven Killings reading, but it too is a comparison made after the fact.

Luck pillars

For a woman born in a yin year (the year stem Gui is yin), the luck pillars run forwards, starting at about age 11.

Where it does not fit: she won in a year that was entirely unfavorable

The most important turning point of her life, the 1982 talent-contest win, falls in a Ren-Xu year: the stem Ren Water is Seven Killings and the branch Xu Earth is Eating God, both unfavorable, and the Gui-Hai luck pillar is unfavorable throughout as well. On the usual reading this should have been a hard, frustrating year, and yet it was the year she made her name in a single night.

We single this year out because it is exactly the part of a celebrity chart that is easiest to skip: pick only the years that fit, and every chart looks accurate. The more honest statement is that unfavorable elements describe pressure and drain, not success or failure. A girl who had been singing on stage since she was four finally found the right stage at 18, and that is not in the year pillar.

Where does the chart miss her real life?

Zi Wei Dou Shu: no birth hour, no chart

In Zi Wei Dou Shu the Life Palace, the Body Palace, the bureau and the position of every star all depend on the birth hour. Anita Mui’s hour has never been made public, so we do not cast a Zi Wei chart. The “Anita Mui Zi Wei charts” circulating online are mostly cast from an assumed hour, so check where they come from.

Western astrology chart

The same moment of birth, cast as a Western natal chart (tropical zodiac, Placidus houses, the same engine as our natal chart tool). A natal chart uses the sky at the moment of birth, so it needs no true-solar-time correction, but it does need the latitude of the birthplace to fix the Ascendant and the houses. BaZi and Zi Wei are both derived from the Chinese calendar, while a natal chart computes planetary positions directly. Because the three systems start from different places, the chart is listed on its own below, followed by where it agrees with the BaZi and Zi Wei readings.

Anita Mui has no reliable birth time, so the Ascendant and houses cannot be cast; but on the day she was born the Moon stayed in Cancer the whole day, so two of the “big three” are certain: a Libra Sun and a Cancer Moon. Venus is in Libra and Mars in Scorpio, both in signs they rule (domicile). Astrological tradition says such a person has a born command of aesthetics and of stage presence, which suits a performer who could bring many different personas to life. A Cancer Moon is loyal and protective of its own, often compared with the way she looked after friends and younger performers. Where it does not fit: BaZi reads her as a weak Bing Fire that needs Wood and Fire to hold up, while the natal chart has Venus and Mars both in domicile, a configuration full of strength. The two systems disagree on “how strong she was.”
