The Numerology Birth Grid: 12 Lines and Missing Numbers
The nine-square grid (jiu gong ge) is how Life Path numerology is most often read in Taiwan: circle the numbers that appear in your birthday in a 1-to-9 grid, and every three in a row form a line with its own trait, while numbers that never appear mark lessons to practice. Western readers may know a similar idea as the Pythagorean birth chart and its "arrows"; the layout and line names here follow Taiwanese usage.
How to draw the grid
The top row is 1, 2, 3, the middle row 4, 5, 6 and the bottom row 7, 8, 9. Take July 10, 1990: 1+9+9+0+0+7+1+0 = 27 (the compound number), 27 → 9, so the Life Path number is 9. Next, circle 1, 9, 9, 0, 0, 7, 1, 0 (the birth date), 2 and 7 (the compound number) and 9 (the Life Path number) one by one; zeros do not go in the grid. This birthday circles 1, 2, 7, 9, is missing 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, and forms no line at all.
Teachers differ on which numbers go in (some use only the birth date, some add a star-sign number); this site uses the birth date plus the compound number plus the Life Path number.

"Birthdays with this line": we ran our calculator on every birthday from 1960 to 2005 (16,802 days). Every line has two names, one for the trait used well and one for the trait overdone.
By our count, about 13.6% of birthdays form no main line at all. That does not mean a lack of ability; in numerology's terms, those traits just do not "form on their own".

The rates vary a lot because everyone born in the 1900s has a 1 and a 9 in their birthday, everyone born from 2000 on has a 2, and zeros never go in the grid, so birthdays with many zeros miss more numbers.

The more lines the better; a full grid is the best.
Many lines means many traits, and possibly energy spread too thin. In numerology every line has a bright side and a shadow side.
A missing number is a flaw.
A missing number is a lesson that needs deliberate practice, not a defect. Plenty of people end up working hardest, and best, at exactly the thing they were missing.
A straight word: numerology is a number game, not BaZi
Life Path numerology is a popular form of Western number mysticism: it only adds up the digits of your birthday, and it has nothing to do with BaZi, which works with stems, branches and the five elements. Its distribution is simple arithmetic: across every day from 1960 to 2005, Life Path numbers 1 to 9 each come out at exactly 11.1%. That is how addition works, not a plan for your life. It is fun for getting to know yourself and for conversation, but do not base big decisions on it. Everything on this site is for reference and entertainment.
