Ruan Lingyu’s BaZi: Xin Metal Surrounded by Its Own Kind

Ruan Lingyu (阮玲玉, 1910–1935) was the defining film actress of 1930s Shanghai. Her father died when she was six, and her mother raised her by working as a maid in a wealthy household. At 16 she passed the audition for a film studio, and in nine years she made nearly thirty films; The Goddess (神女, 1934) is still regarded as the summit of Chinese silent cinema. No reliable record of her birth hour survives. Her year, month and day pillars are Geng-Xu, Geng-Chen, Xin-You (庚戌 庚辰 辛酉): Xin Metal born in late spring, with two Geng Metal Rob Wealth stems showing, and all twelve possible hours read strong, favoring Water, Wood and Fire.

This is a chart heavy with Metal. It favors Water (Output) to let the talent flow out, Wood (Wealth) to spend the strength, and Fire (Officer) to temper the metal; it does not want more Earth (Resource) or Metal (companions). A strong chart needs an outlet above all, and her outlet is Water, that is, Output: expression, performance, the release of emotion. She was known for a natural, finely detailed style of acting and was called by critics the actress who could act better than anyone, which sits close to the reading “strong Day Master, favoring Output.”

Luck pillars: her whole career fell in pillars with an unfavorable stem and a favorable branch

For a woman born in a yang year (the year stem Geng is yang), the luck pillars run backwards, starting at about age 8.

Unfavorable stem, favorable branch can be read as “outward status and protection (Resource) weigh on her, while the opportunities underneath (Wealth) never stop coming.” The film offers never stopped, yet she was always entangled in contracts, lawsuits and public opinion.

A few years, and the kind of verdict this site does not give

1926 is a Bing-Yin year: the stem Bing Fire is Direct Officer and the branch Yin Wood is Direct Wealth, both favorable, and that was the year she debuted. 1935 is a Yi-Hai year: the stem Yi Wood is Indirect Wealth and the branch Hai Water is Hurting Officer, also both favorable, and that was the year she died. The words she left behind, “gossip is a fearful thing” (人言可畏), became the phrase most often quoted whenever people discuss the media and the pressure on celebrities.

In Zi Wei Dou Shu the Life Palace, the Body Palace, the bureau and the position of every star all depend on the birth hour. Ruan Lingyu’s hour has no reliable source, so we do not cast a Zi Wei chart.

The same moment of birth, cast as a Western natal chart (tropical zodiac, Placidus houses, the same engine as our natal chart tool). A natal chart uses the sky at the moment of birth, so it needs no true-solar-time correction, but it does need the latitude of the birthplace to fix the Ascendant and the houses. BaZi and Zi Wei are both derived from the Chinese calendar, while a natal chart computes planetary positions directly. Because the three systems start from different places, the chart is listed on its own below, followed by where it agrees with the BaZi and Zi Wei readings.

Ruan Lingyu has no reliable birth time, but on the day she was born the Moon stayed in Scorpio the whole day, so a Taurus Sun and Scorpio Moon are certain. Taurus and Scorpio are opposite signs of the zodiac: the Sun wants security and solid ground, while the Moon is emotion at its deepest and most intense, traditionally read as calm on the outside and turbulent within. Venus is in Pisces (exalted), a sign of sensitivity to beauty and strong empathy, often cited to explain an actor’s ability to disappear into a role.
