Oprah Winfrey’s BaZi: A Winter Plant Facing a Wall of Seven Killings

Oprah Winfrey was born in rural Mississippi and raised in poverty by her grandmother in her early years. At 17 she was working part time at a local radio station, at 19 she became Nashville’s first Black woman news anchor, and at 30 she moved to Chicago to host a morning show. She went on to make The Oprah Winfrey Show the highest-rated talk show in America and to build her own media business. Her birth time, 4:30 a.m., is the time she was told as a child, and the chart comes out as Gui-Si, Yi-Chou, Yi-You, Wu-Yin: Yi Wood born in deep winter, with the branches Si, You and Chou combining into a Metal formation of Seven Killings. We cast all twelve possible hours, and every one reads weak. The most counterintuitive thing about this chart is that for the forty years at the peak of her career, her luck pillars were unfavorable in both stem and branch.

This is a time passed on by Oprah herself, not a birth certificate, so we cast all twelve possible hours:

Every hour scores between 0.18 and 0.32: weak in all twelve, with Water and Wood favorable in all twelve. Whatever hour she was actually born in, the broad shape of the BaZi does not change, and the luck pillars begin at almost the same time. Below, the Yin hour is the main chart.

The Four Pillars and the Ten Gods

A score of 0.266 is weak. Yi Wood is attacked by the Seven Killings Metal combination and drained by the Wealth stars of Earth, so the favorable elements are Water (Resource) to feed it and Wood (companions) to back it up; the unfavorable ones are Fire (Output), Earth (Wealth) and Metal (Officer and Seven Killings).

A weak chart in which Seven Killings forms a combination is traditionally read as “enormous pressure all her life, and often forged by adversity”. Her childhood and teenage years were very hard, as she has discussed openly on her own show; we will not retell the details here, only explain how this structure is traditionally read.

Luck pillars: forty peak career years, all unfavorable

For a woman born in a yin year (the year stem Gui is yin), the luck pillars run forward, starting at age 3.

“fav / unfav” reads the stem first, then the branch: whether each one’s element is favorable (useful), unfavorable, or neither (neutral) for this chart.

From 1976 to 2015, the four luck pillars Wu-Chen, Ji-Si, Geng-Wu, Xin-Wei are unfavorable in both stem and branch: Earth is Wealth, Fire is Output and Metal is Seven Killings, and they take turns bearing down on a winter Yi Wood. By the usual understanding of luck pillars, these should have been forty “very hard” years. And these forty years are exactly the ones in which she went from a local reporter taken off the anchor desk to the most influential media figure in America.

Yu Kwang-chung (余光中), elsewhere in this series, also walked forty years of unfavorable luck, and they too were the years of his greatest acclaim. Put the two charts side by side and the more fitting reading is this: unfavorable luck describes burden and depletion, not how high a person rises. With Wealth, Output and Seven Killings all unfavorable, in plain words that means a great deal of money, workload, responsibility and pressure. For a host who did five shows a week for twenty-five seasons, that is almost a literal description.

Some key years

1984 was a Jia-Zi year: the stem Jia Wood is Rob Wealth and the branch Zi Water is Indirect Resource, so the whole year is favorable, and it brings exactly the Water and Wood she needs most. That year she moved to Chicago, took over a morning show that was last in the ratings, and within months made it number one: the turning point of her whole career. Inside forty years of unfavorable luck, the most decisive turn landed in a fully favorable year. It is hard not to notice, but we only list it and leave it there.

Where does the chart miss her real life?

Zi Wei Dou Shu chart

BaZi weighs the five elements and what the chart favors; Zi Wei looks at which stars fall in which palace. The two systems ask different questions, so the Zi Wei chart is shown on its own first, followed by where it agrees and disagrees with the BaZi reading.

The gold frame is the Life Palace; the shaded palaces are its three-sides-and-four-directions (Wealth, Career, Travel). Solid badges are the birth-year transformations (Lu, Quan, Ke, Ji), red names are the six malefic stars, and the small word after a major star is its brightness.

Oprah’s Zi Wei chart has an empty Life Palace (in the Hai palace) holding only You Bi, Tuo Luo and Tian Ma, so it borrows the stars of the Travel Palace opposite, Lian Zhen and Tan Lang; and for someone born in a Gui year, Tan Lang takes the Ji transformation right there. Lian Zhen with Tan Lang is a combination strong in desire, charisma and social reach, and Ji stands for fixation, the thing one cannot let go. The Body Palace falls in the Career Palace, which holds Tian Fu together with the helpful stars Zuo Fu and Tian Kui. A Body Palace in the Career Palace is traditionally read as “a life centered on work”; Tian Fu is a steady treasury, and Zuo Fu and Tian Kui bring helpers and patrons. For a woman who turned a talk show into a media empire and is famous as a workaholic, this palace fits closely. Her birth time is rated A (the time she was told as a child), and Zi Wei is very sensitive to the hour, so all of these readings should be taken with a discount.

Western astrology chart

The same moment of birth, cast as a Western natal chart (tropical zodiac, Placidus houses, the same engine as our natal chart tool). A natal chart uses the sky at the moment of birth, so it needs no true-solar-time correction, but it does need the latitude of the birthplace to fix the Ascendant and the houses. BaZi and Zi Wei are both derived from the Chinese calendar, while a natal chart computes planetary positions directly. Because the three systems start from different places, the chart is listed on its own below, followed by where it agrees with the BaZi and Zi Wei readings.

The Aquarius Sun is conjunct Venus, only 0.1° apart, in the 2nd house (money and values), and at the same time makes a nearly exact square to Saturn (0.1°). The astrological reading: her worth and wealth (2nd house, Venus) come from doing things differently (Aquarius), but pressure and tests come with them all the way (the Saturn square). The Sagittarius Moon is in the 11th house (groups and the public), tying her emotions to the crowd; for a talk-show host it is hard to imagine a more fitting placement. Note carefully: her Ascendant is at 29° Sagittarius, and a birth just 2 minutes later would give a Capricorn Ascendant. She herself says no one knows the exact time, so the Ascendant is the least reliable item here. BaZi reads her as weak Yi Wood whose career peak fell in fully unfavorable luck pillars, and the Saturn square in her natal chart says the same thing: achievement that comes with pressure.
