The eight pairs of Yan Nian
Yan Nian has eight pairs. Common tables rank them into four strength levels, two pairs each; the two pairs on a level are the same digits in reverse order (for example 19 and 91) and carry the same weight.
| Strength level | Pairs | Trigrams (directions) |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | 19, 91 | Kan–Li (north–south) |
| Level 2 | 78, 87 | Dui–Gen (west–northeast) |
| Level 3 | 34, 43 | Zhen–Xun (east–southeast) |
