What Is Self-Punishment (Chen, Wu, You, Hai)?
Self-punishment is the most peculiar Punishment — Chen meeting Chen, Wu meeting Wu, You meeting You, Hai meeting Hai: the same character repeated in a chart, at odds with itself. No one provokes you; you tangle yourself into a knot.

- a Punishment (self-punishment)

1. What is self-punishment?
Most Punishments are different characters controlling one another; self-punishment is the same character punishing itself — Chen, Wu, You, Hai, if repeated in the chart (say two Wu), form a self-punishment. What is haunting about it: outwardly calm, no one troubling you, yet a daily war within. Self-punishment is a wearing turned inward.
2. Where it sits, what it touches
Self-punishment lands most on overthinking, circling the same worry, self-made trouble, self-consumption — often insomnia, anxiety, not letting go, regretting words for hours. Whichever pillar it falls in is where you wrestle yourself: in the Day Branch, self-tugging in love; in the Hour, not letting go of children or old age.
3. When is it triggered?
With one already present (say one Wu), a Luck Pillar or year bringing another Wu deepens the self-punishment, and the self-tangling is most pronounced then — inner attrition once held down tends to surface, dragging sleep and mood with it.
4. How is it remedied?
Its enemy is you; but that “can’t-stop” focus, aimed right, becomes a delicacy others cannot match — proofreading, fine handcraft, research, quality control, auditing, anything demanding total, error-free focus, holds it best. The cure is not out there but in learning to make peace with yourself, turning excess introspection into outward focus. (Reference only.)
5. A story from within a chart
An engineer carried a Chen-Chen self-punishment, a perfectionist — a piece revised again and again, never good enough, at night re-running every decision of the day in his head, worn ragged. In Chen years the self-wrestling tightened and he nearly ran himself to exhaustion. Later he aimed that “won’t-let-a-detail-go” drive at zero-defect quality control and verification — the same fussiness, on a new field, became the pair of eyes his team trusted most. Self-punishment’s lesson is not to grind against yourself but to find that drive a right outlet.
