What Is the Jia–Ji Combination?
The Jia–Ji Combination is the first of the five Stem combinations — Jia (yang Wood) and Ji (yin Earth) combine, transforming to Earth when conditions are ripe. Old-named the “Combination of Uprightness,” it tends toward uprightness, tolerance, and good faith.

1. What are the five Stem combinations?
Not only the Branches combine — the Heavenly Stems (Jia, Yi, Bing… the characters on the surface) combine too, one yin and one yang drawn into a pair, five in all. Jia-Ji is the first. When conditions are ripe, a Stem combination “transforms” into a new element — Jia-Ji to Earth.
2. Transform, or not?
Jia-Ji combine; if conditions are ripe (enough Earth, a catalyst) they truly transform to Earth, a new force; if short, they are “combined but not transformed,” just two characters holding hands. With Jia-Ji, first ask whether it transformed.
3. What Jia-Ji means
The “Combination of Uprightness” — a flavor of uprightness, tolerance, and good faith; those with it often seem steady and dependable. With Jia or Ji present, a Luck Pillar or year bringing the other stirs it — an alliance, a partnership, a romance, or a role (a Ten God) being combined and pulled aside.
